They dealt Austin Kearns, Felipe Lopez and Ryan Wagner for Royce Clayton and a couple of pitchers. shouldnt it be the nationals who are selling to the reds???

wtf the Reds GM is fucking stupid. Trading away Lopez and Kearns alone.

wtf noooo. kearns is going from one of the most hitter friendly parks to one of the worst. i just picked him up in a trade in one of my fantasy leagues

I think they're trying to find a Soriano replacement before they ship him out.

That's the only explaination I can think of.

That's why I'm thinking as well.

Still, I don't know why the Reds would do that.

thats a really random trade for the Reds.

apparently they did it to bolster the pen' with majewski.

but i cant understand this deal for the life of me. Bowden may have just saved his job w/ this deal.

This will finally free up Freel to play everyday though.

Royce clayton isint better than Kearns or Lopez. The Nats are getting a good setup/closer in Wager. I played against him in high school...nasty stuff.
I really dont see how the Reds can make a division or wild card push now minus two of their starters.

hes a 2004 1st round pick and the Reds are already giving up on him.

I liked Krivsky's previous moves but this one is fucked, in my opinion.

either wayne krivsky is some kind of genius and this will work out beautifully, or i'm missing something.

i understand needing to improve the defense and bullpen, but at least get equal value in return. He didnt need to panic and make this deal right now ...theres stll 2 1/2 weeks till the deadline.

I cant explain how much I am pissed about this trade. I love Kearns he came right out of Lexington, he was a super nice guy. I dont understand this trade. apparently the pitchers we got could be good, but we are a pennant race and these guys will not help us out for a few years. This is an awful trade

Yes and if i were a reds fan i would probably strangle myself because cinci hasent been a contender since 98, the first time they actually have a shot they piss it away.

actually in 99 we lost a one game playoff with the Mets, but yes I am beyond pissed right now. I just dont understand what was going through our GM's head. We are 4 games out of first and 1.5 out of the wildcard. This to me is showing that he has no faith in his team to be able make the playoffs. I just understand this trade one bit

The only plausible answer: The Reds front office is terrible.

Okay, I am going to explain this trade.

Austin Kearns is a career .280 hitter, nothing more. he has never been consistent enough to be the .310 hitter that the reds expected him to be, and they're realizing it. let's also throw in his constant, constant injury problems. he is absolutely one of the most overrated young players in the league.

Felipe Lopez has been hitting about .250 since April and is one of the worst defensive shortstops in the majors, and that had Jerry Narron angry, angry enough to tell Krivsky to trade for Juan Castro for defensive help. There have also been signs of turmoil between Narron and Lopez. During the first game of a Thursday-Sunday set, Lopez threw away the third out in the eighth and allowed the winning run to score. At this point, most managers would have either let the player play through the error and get back into rhythm, or give him a day off to rest his head and let him get back there for Saturday's game. What happened? Lopez didn't play another game the rest of the weekend. Something obviously was not right here.

Ryan Wagner was a miserable failure late last year, not developing into the "closer of the future" that he had been dubbed for two years. This year he pitched well in the spring but barely missed the club. In Louisville (AAA), Wagner has struggled mightily all season with an ERA hovering around 7. Wagner was said to be ecstatic about this trade.

It was also said that Reds prospect Chris Denorfia, who was hitting over .350 in the International League, will be called up and will get an opportunity to play right field consistently. It's his position to have or to lose.

Meanwhile...the Reds pick up Royce Clayton, a stopkeep at the shortstop position who has similar numbers to Lopez and who will hold the position for probably the rest of the season. Next season, Brandon Phillips will probably move over to the shortstop position, and either Ryan Freel (a more natural position for him) or prospect Willie Bergolla will take over the second base duties.

Gary Majewski is 26 years old, a set up man for very good closer Chad Cordero, who was rumored to be on the trading block at least years deadline because he "had closers stuff" but was in a situation where he wouldn't get a chance because of Cordero. Bill Bray is a 23 year old left hander who has a 3.91 ERA in his first full season in the majors.

Name me three other teams in the majors who have a right handed reliever, 26, and a left handed reliever, 23, each who throw in the mid-90s and have above average major league experience for their ages.

This was a good trade for the Reds. Most people in my hometown, and obviously here, wholeheartedly disagree with this trade. But honestly, Denorfia has been incredible and gets a shot, Phillips can move to a natural position, Freel can play every day, and we get two young fireballer relievers, including one who's left handed.

I'm extremely happy.

Joel Zumaya is 21, throws 99+ consistently out of the bullpen but has always been a starter, Wilfredo Ledezma is 25 and throws low to mid 90's and is left handed and a starter who's in the pen :D

i love our young pitchers.

but it does seem reasonable now that you've explained it. but i don't know.

i understand the reasons why cincinati moved the guys they did, i just think they didn't get anywhere near equal value for them. if they held out for a couple more weeks, they could have moved kearns and lopez to a number of teams and gone with the highest bid, which would surely have been more than what the Nationals offered.

it just seems like Krivsky pulled the trigger a little too early and settled for less than what he should have.

maybe true, but how much more desperate would have washington been nearer the trade deadline? and i am positive that other teams were talking to the nationals about their relief pitching.

right, but i'm not just talking about washington. There are plenty of teams around baseball who are looking to add a bat ...Cincinati didnt have to settle for Washington and this offer. They should have held out for a few more weeks because there are certainly teams who would overpay for guys like Kearns and Lopez, considering the market is so thin this year.

that is true, but there are also bats still available for cincinnati. at least one catcher is available, and now we have extra bullpen help (David Weathers, veteran set up man, started as closer this season, been around for god knows how long, teams beg for players like him late in the season. Todd Coffey may also be on the block already...)

What the Red's did was set the price for relievers this season, which is super high. While Clayton does not have the same offenses numbers as Lopez, Lopez is the lesser of offensive players between Freel and Phillips (so far). If the Red felt like trading him, go ahead, but no Kearns. O’Brien fucked both Pena and Kearns with his terrible management. Wagner still had time to grow and develop his arm, and Majewski is pretty much what you get. Also, moving a slight hitters park where fly balls soar out of there, Majewski is not going to have the same success he has had in RFK. His GB and FB ratios (along with K/BB rates) are quite similar to Wagner‘s. This is not to say the Red's didn't attempt to make the right move here. Krivsky could of believed he saw all he was going to see out of Lopez and maybe Wagner, but you don't move Kearns. You also have to give Wagner another shot. His arm could be done after his shoulder injury in 2005, but you cannot give up on him just yet. Krivsky knew what he needed, but he paid way too much for it.

hopefully theo is looking to deal some of his relief pitchers.
