View Full Version : Popular and Overplayed Songs

It pisses me off that people think they're cool cause they listened to band before they got popular. I hate it when people try to look cool like that, so "original" and "smart". I honestly don't care what's popular, and the popularity of a song can never change my opinion on it. I mean, it's still the same song, right? So how can I like it less?

Overplaying a song can kill it no doubt.

If I have an artist's entire discography, their most popular song is usually the one I like the least because that's the one I have to hear over and over and fucking over on the radio.
(eg. System of a Down's BYOB. Amazing song, but can't get into it like I could before I had to hear it a million times.)

Who's stupid enough to listen to the radio? iPod > Radio.

When you hear a song get played over and over it makes it less fun to listen to, and makes you not want to listen to it... not kill it though.

I think that the problem is overplaying, like people are saying. Something about hearing a song on nearly every radio station and having your friends sing it all the time ruins the song for me. For me, at least, it's like knowing a secret that no one else knows. It makes you feel special, not cool, but special, to know songs that others don't know. It's just rewarding, and when everyone suddenly knows this secret it's not as fun to know it.

I have to agree with hating people thinking they're cool for listening to a band before they got popular.
It's like, so what if the first song I ever heard by a certain band was their hit single? So you've known about the band for longer. That doesn't change how much I like the band, or make you more of a fan.
Really...people who act like they are way more devoted to a band because have known about them for longer, and scoff at new fans are downright obnoxious, IMO.

it's easier to scoff at newer fans if the band Now sounds like garbage.

to me, its just annoying as hell when little girls hear a song on the radio by a band ive listened to for years, and all of the sudden that song is their "absolute FAVORITE" and theyre that bands "BIGGEST FAN" when they only know 1 or 2 songs by them.
usually the songs that bands have on the radio are the songs i like the least. not only because theyre overplayed, but because those are usually the songs that are best for radio play. the poppy feel-good songs that will get appeal to mass audiences. thats just personal taste though, i guess.

I understand feeling this way, but I also grew out of it when I was 16.

Don't listen to the radio, like music for it's quality not it's popularity

Nope, it's been like a year since I last saw it. The thread is kind of useless anyway so I thought I'd contribute by making a useless post like the one I'm making right now.

This will never be as good as the Enns Media Rating System thread, though. I wish Kevin would spread to the other parts of the site. If he did that I would definitely post more often.
