Just a discussion about movies that carry a lot of hype with them.

What're some past movies that had a lot of weight to carry and succeeded/failed? With Avatar released, what's the next film that will grab the world's attention?

DaveFeelsRight

obvious pick: the dark knight

Nice, I would say the most totally recent ones are Cloverfield, The Dark Knight, (maybe Transformers?), and Avatar. There's nothing like seeing a movie in a packed theatre that has a total sense of anticipation and excitement - even though the movies are often sub-par

Iron Man 2's next. People will go apeshit over that regardless of how good it actually ends up being.

Not exactly hype, but I see a trailer for Edge of Darkness almost every single commercial break on TV. Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that this movie will flop?

Hyped up by friends and what not more then deserved:
Cloverfield
I Am Legend
Paranormal Activity
Where The Wild Things Are
Transformers 1 & 2

I remember Pirates of the Caribbean being hyped like crazy.

Also, this.

Ooo forgot about Paranormal Activity.
Also, Cloverfield was definitely a pleasant surprise.

If there is a next Batman film, the expectations will be to high to ever meet

I'm psyched for the Hobbit movies. and judging by everyone's reaction to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it will be huge as well.

I enjoyed Transformers 2  I am totally in the minority and still can't figure out why people hated it so much.

Yes. I'm pretty sure it'll be the movie to de-throne Avatar.

Dark Knight met expectations. Avatar was sub par. Transformers 2 was a shit bomb. I'll try not to hype up Iron Man 2.

terrible plot, acting, story, and characters. What baffles me how people could even like it. I mean Transformers 1 was at so dumb it was awesome, but when you cross it at 2 and a half hours, its just terrible. Especially when you add Jar-jar Binks style characters.

What do you think about Paranormal Activity? I think the 'demand-it' campaign was bullshit, and that production studios were planning to release it all along, but some extra underground support couldn't hurt. Also, its pretty mixed as far as if its actually scary or not. I found it to be pretty scary in a packed theatre late at night, but at home I wasn't even interested.

Whoever said the next Nolan-Batman was right. Unless they make the "perfect" movie it's not gonna meet the hype it's going to garner. That said, I absolutely loved TDK. I had really high expectations and it blew them out of the water.

Movies I felt were overhyped:
Superman returns
Wolverine
Pirates 2 (and I loved the first one)
and does anybody remember Battlefield Earth and the pile of crap was?

and yes, Spiderman 3. It felt like I was watching this:

I remember waiting in line all night to get good seats at the midnight show to star wars. (before the time of assigned seating) We actually played a game of risk in line! Good times.

Aren't we just talking about any live-action movie that has enough financial backing for filming/marketing purposes, features a semi/well-known actor, and has the possibility of a good premise for a story?

I guess not sober enough to remember the actual name of the movie you're referring to either.

You're a complete fucking idiot if you really think that. Know the origins of the film before you go spouting off conspiracy theories.

The Demand it promo WAS a gimmick. The counter rolled up 7 votes every 2 seconds non stop until it hit the number it needed.

The hype for the film had been growing for over 2 years. The Demand-It struck when the kettle was hot and it worked in their favor. Based on hype alone there were certainly a million people that wanted to see it. You think that if the demand stayed within the horror community (where all the hype was prior to mid-2009) that a studio would put that much money behind it?

My point is, the hype had been rolling years before Paramount came anywhere near it.
