I was on business in Cali and decided to see HH and Anberlin at Costa Mesa with a few friends. We got there just in time for Anberlin, who put on a great show. They had a solid, clean sound and a lot of positive energy, which got the crowd going by the end of the set. They also played a brand new song off their soon-to-be next release, which sounded great, yet not any different from the two older albums.
After about a 45 minute set, Anberlin finished and gave way to Hawthorne Heights, a band whom, until this show, had liked a lot. From the get go, all the teenage girls stood up screaming, creating all the energy for a performance which lacked just that. While the sound was solid, the band didn't move, aside from the headbanging via the lead guitarist, who apparently thought he was Slash. Aside from their boring body langauge, they put on a great show and the crowd was really enjoying it, as the band played fan favorites, including "Saying Sorry" and the encore of "Ohio is for Lovers." Yet the worst part of the night occured halfway through the set as the band was breaking in between songs. The lead singer, Jt Woodruff, decided that he was "going to go out on a limb" and make a statement about New York. He then proceded to descibe how "Cali people" are much cooler than "new york people," citing that all New Yorkers do is "yell at each other" and that they care too much "about getting their Starbucks coffee."T Bold move Jt, and it would have gone unnotticed, had the idiot not said this infront of 3 New Yorkers, including myself. Why he felt it was neccessary to say this is beyond me, as it could only hurt the band's rep. Apparently the band only cares about the fans they are currently playing for, and could care less about the millions of probable HH fans in New York. Well after that show, he lost 3 fans and I encourage every New Yorker to stop supporting the band so that we have more time to yell at eachother and get our coffee. Terrible show, terrible band. No Class.
