He's done at the end of the year.

Thoughts?

With Jürgen Klinsmann stepping down for Germany, things seem to be shaping up well for him as the possible replacement. I think he's definitely one of the best possible candidates, too.

Thank God. Bruce just wasn't getting it down. Bring on Jurgen.

He did a ton for the sport in America and has a great legacy, but it was his time. He couldn't really take them any further.

Klinnsmann wanted to spend time with his family in his home in California... chances are he'll take over US team.
Klinnsmann is a good coach, he was a fantastic player though.

Played for Spurs :)

It seems likely that he'll do take hte US job. Im suprised that they announced that Arena is stepping down so soon after the World Cup. I figured they'd announce it in November.
Arena is going to have a tough time getting a job because he's criticized the hell out of the MLS and he isnt respected internationally.

they managed to win today. Should be a front page headline in the Daily News tomorrow.

Jurgen won't be offered the Red Bulls job. He can't be.
Der Kaiser (Franz Beckenbauer) is expected to become president of the club and he was among the first to criticize Klinny. Beckenbauer is best friends with the founder's and CEO's of Red Bull and he has been expected to take the job for next season. Beckenbauer publically 'supports' Klinnsmann in press confrences, but rips him a new asshole in his Blid column and according to rumor in private. He doesn't care too much for the guy.

On top of that, why would Jurgen take the head coaching position of a the shittiest team in one of the shittiest leagues in the world? He could have any job he wanted in Gemany.
In addition, he wants to be with his family. He can't exactly fly home in between the daily practices. A club manager is WAAAAAAAY more involved that being manager of a country.
He can just watch video tape whenever he wants, when he is a national team manager.

no, i meant arena is the frontrunner for the NY red bulls job

Oh well it was vague and since no one has really talked about Arena in this thread I figured it was about Jurgen. I could see Arena doing it, but like I said earlier, he has criticized the MLS a whole lot while national team coach, so he'd look really weak if he coached one of their teams.

He did a good job with his 8 years but it was time for him to go

I guess that isn't a huge step down.

yes it is. the red bulls are a mess right now. plus they're a corporate whore. if he doesn't make this team amazing immediately, people will hate the team even more and arena's legacy will be tainted.

Sort of hard to have a legacy when no one cares about the sport.
He won the first two MLS titles, and is the greatest ever US national team coach. He has probably two years to turn the Red Bulls around. I think he'll be able to do it.

there are plenty of people who care about the sport. maybe not to the amount that people care about the nfl, but still a substantial amount. and he also won 5 ncaa division 1 soccer championships with virginia, in like a 7 year span. and i'm not sure if he will be able to make them in to a great team in 2 years, maybe 5.

Well you know what I meant.
For those who care, right now, what he does in the MLS is meaningless. No one cares about those first two MLS titles.
How he does in the MLS will only matter if the MLS manages to resemble a decent league.
I still think that he can do it in two. The MLS needs a good team in its biggest market. They'll cut corners to allow it to happen.

mls is still young, but just because it doesn't have legions of fans and all the history of european or south american football doesn't mean that it's shit. it's still growing, and in the first 4 seasons of mls, arena coached dc to the mls cup and us open cup, while also being the championship game every year, winning 2 out of 3 times. i agree though, it would benefit the league and american soccer if its largest market had a good team. look at the yankees dynasty. the current red bulls team is more like the knicks or the rangers than the yankees or giants, but that's what they should be and hopefully arena can get them there. the beauty of him not officially becoming coach until august is that if they don't do well he can say that he came too late, or that if they do do well, it's because of him. what would be bad is if he did terrible.

I've tried many many times to watch an MLS game and I can't. It's unattractive football. Aging players will never play in it because it is way too physical. There is no tackling just fouling. There are normally two good teams (DC and LA), that play somewhat watchable football. There are a lot of thingsthat need to change for the league to get big. I'd love to see a good league in the US, but I don't think it's essential for soccer to become a big sport.
The MLS needs more stylish players, less brute tackling, good teams in the biggest markets, and a good television deal, for english and spanish channels, that while be well advertised.
All the EPL needs for soccer to get bigger in this country is for ESPN to start playing the games, or for FSC to be in every household in the country and be well hyped.

mls is still young, and it's getting a lot better. when the league first started, it was crap. they had shootouts and all this other lame shit. not to mention the level of play was horrible. but it's gotten much better and in another 5 or 10 years i think it'll be a very good league. i can understand how people feel about mls. i mean if you go from the premiership to an mls game in the same day, the difference is huge. but i like both leagues equally and i want mls to grow the sport in america. after all, it took the nfl like 50 years to become how it is today. it's just patience.
