Just because some people can't think for themselves doesn't mean they aren't the greatest.
Naturally, & I was perhaps more inclined to go along with that sentiment five years ago. But the more I discover about music, the more musical paths I venture down & around, the less I seem to care about The Beatles & their impact. I don't mean that in a belittling manner, as if they "suck" or just don't matter at all. But I think there's a lot more to the puzzle than that one stock-standard answer, but some people seem to refuse to dig a little deeper.
Instead of "something by The Beatles", where are the answers like:
Amazing Grace (first composed by John Newton I think, but you can choose whose version you like the most)
Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World
Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Inkanyezi Nezazi (Star & The Wiseman)
The Impressions - People Get Ready
Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come
Bob Marley & The Wailers - One Love
Or many many other songs I didn't manage to come up with in that 1minute it took to post a quick reply. All I'm saying here mate is lets not limit ourselves to such an extent, there's a whole world of music, & there's a whole world of great music outside of England in the 60's, hopefully some of us are listening/exploring.

I could make a case as to how despite agreeing with most of what you say, I still think The Beatles are the best.
But you mentioned "People Get Ready." So I'm going to leave it alone and just listen to the wonderment that is that song.
Btw wouldn't it have been funny if they actually meant to say "Something" by The Beatles and this discussion was a waste?

Oh I certainly agree mate, & I don't think there is one greatest song either. I wasn't even going to post in here haha. I just don't like to see people limiting themselves into going along with suggestions they don't even really believe in, but accept because they think they should. My point isn't so much about right or wrong, more that people should let themselves discover the musical world is a much more full manner. Let music from all around the world, from all over the time spectrum, all the different sounds the world produces, let it wash upon them, let themselves make up their own minds instead of blindly following.

Absolutely, & you would be completely entitled to do so. I'm not arguing wrong or right here, it's all about individual perspective. My point was more what I was saying above, about people blindly following what they don't really have a concept or opinion of. Not discovering the magic of music for themselves. That's what bothers me a little. But not to worry.
Anything Curtis Mayfield has been a part of is just gorgeous.
Hahaha that actually crossed my mind after I made that first post. But oh well haha.

Oh I agree. I'm of the "explore as much as you can" camp as well. It bums me out that most music fans aren't ever going want to hear what I'm listening to right now (Sammy Davis, Jr. at the moment).
Which reminds me? Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Where to start if I want to check her out? I've only ever heard her guest spot on a Ben Harper record.
As for Curtis, all I know is that song. I'm waiting to see Superfly before I listen. Weird, I know.

For sure, & I wasn't taking this thread in a serious context haha. In the past we've had some great musical discussions about the 60's, 70's, all time, genres, etc, etc, & me & this site have always had a bit of a standoff on The Beatles, (in regards to blind following) that's all. Obviously if you weren't around this time last year you probably have no idea what I'm on about haha, not to worry though.
It all takes time mate, we're always discovering new ventures. Never know what great might new musical sound we might unearth if we never seek. But it's great to hear you have allowed yourself the freedom to do so.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo are also featured on Paul Simon's Graceland, on songs like "Homeless" etc. Well this is the song I mentioned above, "Inkanyezi Nezazi"
9p5J4zYtro8
But since you're an album man, I'd also suggest
Shaka Zulu - Great starting point for most people, gives a good feel for these guys. It was recorded straight after they their collaboration with Paul Simon on Graceland.
No Boundaries (with the English Chamber Orchestra) - This one is a treat, but a bit different to their usual acapella albums. Here Ladysmith Black Mambazo collaborte with some of the worlds greatest orchestra players, conducted by a grand Finnish pianist & one of todays best composers. Paul Simon even joins them on "Amazing Grace". Gorgeous cross-cultural collaboration of musical talent.
Haha we all have our reasons. His first solo albums Curtis is essential. I can never get enough of that album.

Sure is, Ladysmith Black Mambazo are perhaps the greatest vocal group I've ever come across. They are a vocal harmony group, founded & led by Joseph Shabalala, from South Africa that sing in the acapella vocal styles of mbube (a vocal form sung with great volume & power) & isicathamiya (focusing more on achieving a harmonious blend between vocals) . Their discography shares songs in English & their native Zulu tongue, their songs mix magic with rhythm, purity with passion & beauty with soul. Nelson Mandella is their #1 fan, that's got to be saying something haha.

If you took the time to read, I've already answered this. I was in no way suggesting anything improper about The Beatles, their music, etc, it's more peoples attitudes towards them. Many are so willing to accept The Beatles are the greatest ever composers of music & no other answer is to be considered. What's worse, is many people just say The Beatles having only heard a song or two now & again, but claim them to be the greatest ever because that's the correct answer right? All I was saying is that people should search around & discover things, musically, for themselves, form their own opinions. Not just play follow the leader. If you're someone who holds The Beatles as the absolute pinnacle of highest acclaim, then so be it. I was never debating any actual fans.
