Suicide/Depression/Drug/Alcohol Abuse/Family Problems/

Hi,

My name is Devin Donohoe. I've recently read a thread on Personal Life forum about depression and other mental illnesses and I thought that there should be a thread about where people can get help and stuff. Since my music project My Last Flight (www.myspace.com/mylastflight) is about suicide/depression awareness, it kinda made sense for me to share information I have on this type of deal. But if anyone else knows other PROFESSIONAL places to seek help, please feel free to post something here. Mental illnesses should not determine what your future will be like, you should be able to do that. And mental illnesses ARE diseases. They are sickness, not a sign of weakness. Always ask for help, it doesn't hurt to do so. I will list some names of the agencies, so if you have any questions on what they are, please contact me at: www.myspace.com/mylastflight or my email at mylastflightmusic@yahoo.com and I'd be more than happy to go over some basic information about each agencies.

For Family Problems such as alcoholic/drug abusing family members, domestic violence/physical abuse, sexually abuse or emotional abuse (emotional suppression):

Department of Social Services/Department of Children and Families (name depending on the state you live in...)
This is a good place to ask for help if you are experiencing any type of family problems that's affecting your life(s).

Alateen/Ala-non: This is a group therapy which usually takes places in a place like Local Church, Community Center and etc for drug and alcohol addiction patients. ALA-teen also is for people who are living with or knows someone who is an addict.

There are many group therapies out there for many types of addictions such as for Sex Addiction, Shopping Addiction and more.

School Psychologist: If you are in Middle School or High School. This is a good place to start asking for help. Every school should have school psychologist where you can make an apointment with him/her to discuss ur problems. Remember, You don't have to have a diagnosable condition such as Major Depressive Disorder, Anti-social Personality Disorder and etc to see a Therapist. You can talk to someone about any problems, and they will help you with coping of that problem.

Service Net:
They offer variety of things. From shelters to outpatient therapy. You can google to find out where your nearest Service Net office is. Call to make an apointment to get help.

Department of Mental Health: This agency is ran by the state and they deal with many aspects of mental illness related things. Including helping you fight the insurance company so you can actually afford to buy your medication at the pharmacy. Google to find where your nearest DMH office is.

Psychiatric/Behavirol Hospital and Rehabs: In a serious case such as attempted suicide, drug/alcohol detox, Hallucination, strong feelings of hopelessness and other serious problems. You can always go to the ER, get evaluated by the doctors there and on call social worker there will help you get into one of the hospitals near you. Sometimes (Because our insurance policies are usually shit), they may take you to a hospital far away from you but that's better than not getting any help, you can always try to get transferred to a closer hospital later. Sometimes, you can always go to the psychiatric hospital directly and check your self in.

Suicide ideation:
call 1 800 SUICIDE and any adult you trust right away. You have to let someone know immediately. Sometimes thinking about ending your life can turn into attempting pretty fast. It is important to be honest and to seek help although it is difficult to reach out for help sometimes.

Mine does. Like one of the previous posters said, they do some testing but help kids out with personal stuff as well. I don't really understand my school's system though, because the school social worker and the guidance conselors both do those things too. :/
