Why? I'm not even saying Kobe should have won it. In my opinion, Dirk was the deserving MVP. A point guard put into a situation in which the style of play is perfectly suited to his game shouldn't have won the MVP simply because of his assist totals and having his teammates play better. He's a good point guard, but like I've said before, put Jason Kidd or Chris Paul on that team and they'd still win the division. Give D'Antoni coach of the year honors for having that system and the perfect player for it. Dirk was the true MVP.
I don't want to argue about this, this topic is months old and has been beaten to death.

Nowitski, Bryant, James, Brand, and Wade are NOT Magic, Jordan, and Bird. Give me a break. When Stockton had MVP caliber years, he was nowhere close to beating out the players he was up against.

Stockton is easily one of the best PG's ever.
I still can't believe he had 28 in a game and didn't get the record. Screw Scott Skiles (alliterations rock).

the reason why stockton could never be considered an mvp was that he was a true point guard. He was never really asked to score cause they had malone. If I had to take a point guard for my team i would take stockton

Look at their numbers. LeBron's numbers are in a sense similar to Magic's, with him scoring more but having less assists, Kobe's are very similar to Jordan's, and Dirk's are very similar to Bird's. Especially in today's game with the zone defense and much better overall talent in the league, especially athletically/defensively. My point was this year those players were ahead of Nash in production, just as much as Bird, Magic, Jordan, etc. were ahead of Stockton, yet Nash still won the MVP twice, and Stockton didn't.
They may not have the great career numbers, accomplishments, and allure of Bird, Magic, and Jordan, but you can not downplay their amazing seasons because of a lack of history.
For example:
In 90-91 Stockton put up 17.2/2.9/14.2
MVP Michael Jordan put up 31.5/6.0/5.5 as you posted
In 2005-2006 Nash put up 18.9/4.2/10.5
Kobe Bryant 35.4/5.3/4.5
LeBron James 31.4/7.0/6.6
Dwyane Wade 27.2/5.7/6.7
And again I emphasize the much improved defense around the league, and the addition of the zone defense.

You can't compare the players, they are from a different era. Think about this- Jordan had a .531 fg% that year, last year kobe shot .450. That is a huge difference. Kobe took like 300 more shots than jordan did that year. Players now hoist it up and that's why scoring averages were so high last year. Don't compare these guys to jordan and bird.

FG% is an awful stat for peremiter players. It doesn't take into account the difficulty/length of shots, especially three pointers. And like I said, defenses are much better now than they were a decade ago.
For argument's sake, LeBron shot 48% last year from the field and DWade shot 49.5%

Bingo...Stockton was never even in the argument for MVP, as great as he was. Nash was clearly one of the top 5 players in the year he won it.
