View Full Version : Country is to Pop Why Taylor Swift isto Kanye West

Taylor Swift is Pop as much as Kanye West is R&B. Both should stay in their own Genre. I like them both but get sick of their promoters taking over genres just so they can get more awards. Your thoughts

Taylor Swift is very poppy, yes. However, she also has elements of country in her music. When she was signed she was signed toa country label, and still is. You can say that she's pop, but she's still country as well. Genres blend together so much anymore that it doesn't even matter, I don't get why people still put such a focus on them... Plus, her "promoter" isn't "taking over genres" to get more awards... Even if she was classified more into pop than country I would say she would get the same awards.
At least she's better than most of the "country" on the radio now a days anyways.

her career comes from immense popularity in country which is, at best, not very friendly to minorities. her video that you're talking about was generic as shit. she easily gets to make the jump to pop based on that. it's quite smart marketing but my point still stands.
Kanye >Taylor Swift any day of the week, unless you're comparing the last albums from each.

How is it a stretch?
her ascendancy to pop culture icon of 2k9 is built on the fact that she became popular in country music first, which is almost completely racially homogeneous. this plus the racial undertones of kanye being the big bad boogeyman because of him getting drunk and stupidly calling her out.

Wow. If you think the reason people don't like Kanye is for anything other than the fact that he's an arrogant clown who never shuts up (no matter how good his music is) you're really looking for something racial to be upset about. He could be white, black or purple and he'd be obnoxious.
And TSwift never really dominated country the way she's owned pop radio. She had some sizeable country hits, but nothing on par with how she's performed on the pop charts.

He was a pain in the ass long before that. But that just brought it to national attention. Most pop musicians are arrogant but they aren't as flagrant about constantly reminding you about it as Kanye is. No other human being on the planet is as openly egotistical. This thread is stupid. The "Taylor Swift isn't country argument" gets really old. She was once much more country than she is now, and when she got a taste of the pop spotlight with her first album, she took more of a pop route on the second album. No one will disagree with the fact Taylor Swift is more pop than country, but the point being is that she is pop. To say genre's should stick to their own is stupid, because, if that were the case, pop would have died with the descent of the likes of Britney Spears, NSYNC, and Christian Aguilera. Other than that, most pop today is rock influence, rap influenced, or has some kind of ulterior influence underlying it. Even Lady Gaga says that she's heavily influenced by jazz piano.

Sorry, this is one of my biggest pet peeves, but there is absolutely and never was anything "country" about Taylor Swift. First of all, she was born in Pennsylvania, not the south, so she never really had a southern accent. Also, you can't just sing with a fake twang in your voice when you want to sing "country," but then go back to your normal voice to sing anything else. All taylor swift is is just some really bad, but computerized, vocals that sometimes have an awful fake accent, big electric guitars and drums (not something present in real country at all), and maybe some fiddle here or there to make it seem more country-ish. She sang in a BLG song for god's sake. I don't recall ever hearing George Strait or Jamey Johnson or Alan Jackson singing in a pop-punk song. I apologize for my big rant, but I just had to get this off of my chest as a big fan of traditional country.

Wow, what an epic first post right there.
Edit: Decided to dissect what you said. First off, you can't say there's "nothing" country about her. If she's influenced by country, then there is something country about her. Whether her music comes off as country or not to you is irrelevant, it's more so the fact that she cites many influences as being country artists, hence, she has a country element to her. She's often lumped with being country because she toured in support of many country artists, and, in her first album and slightly her second, it has some loose country vibes to it, whether it be something as subtle as an echoing fiddle or a twang in a vocal. Yes, she was born in PA, but, has lived in Nashville for nearly 6 years. When you live in a certain area long enough, you begin to adopt their tendencies, such as accents. While I hear nearly no accent in her voice, I figured I'd point that out just to make you that much more wrong. Also, in her songs, the chord structures she uses, and the occasional fiddle are what give it a country vibe, not her vocals. It's more so pop vocal stylings with loose country/pop music. So, she doesn't "sing country style and go back to a normal voice" at all, she sings the way she sings, and that's that. If some accent comes up, or someone has a much more keen ear for accents than I do, then I'd say it's because she's lived in the south for her entire teenage lifespan. Also, her first record had nearly no "big electric guitars and drums," it was very, very acoustic influenced, other than songs like "Picture to Burn" and "I'm Only Me When I'm With You." No one's (at least I'm not) arguing she's "country," per se, just that she is influenced and has country tendencies, such as a fiddle and chord choices. And, she sang in a BLG song, yes, but even if she were country, that wouldn't make her any LESS country, whatsoever. If I'm a Pittsburgh native but travel to Philadelphia, I wouldn't claim to be a Philadelphian. I would still be a Pittsburgher, just a Pittsburgher in Philadelphia. Therefore, singing in a pop punk song will not qualify her as a pop punk artist. And, while we're on the that topic..
o22eIJDtKho
Johnny Cash, possibly the most profound country artist of all, covered a Nine Inch Nails song. Would that make him electronic/prog rock? So, there you have it, a country man singing an electronica song, yet he's still a country artist. Just because you delve into a genre outside of your own does not automatically affiliate you with the said genre.

Well, gee. It's not like I haven't been obvious about it :-d
Haha, but on a serious note, Tim would probably beat my ass right now. That's no way to treat a newbie, but, I couldn't resist, haha. I just hate when newbies spew nonsense like that because they think they know country better than anyone around. I don't know country any better than the next person, but, you can't argue someone's influences.
Yeah, I know what you mean. But it was his first post, dude!

He reminds me of that one kid, I think his name was DieHard, that would come into the Babe Thread, quote everyone that posted pictures of girls with small chests, and say "SHE'S NOT HOT BECAUSE SHE HAS SMALL TITS," and things of that nature. And then, when people would mock him, he'd say "GO DIE!!!!!!!!!!"
I wonder what happened to him. I'm sure he'll see this eventually, I swear he trolls my posts. So, hello DieHard, when and if you see this.
HAHAHAHA, this is hilarious. That kid is Jeremy...sizetoosmall?

But in all seriousness, that kid couldn't have been serious about Taylor singing with Boys Like Girls, and have that be part of his reasoning for not being country. Johnny Cash covered, not guest sang, but COVERED a NIN song, yet no one would consider JCash an electronic artist.

Definitely not a DMB fan, but I like Lady Gaga and Beyonce way more than T-Swift...
IMO IMO just so you know I dont have a problem with her winning the other ones, just Album of the Year, I think should have gone to Gaga.

You've gotta know when to test the waters, though, man. I am a Taylor fan, and I can take other people's opinions on why she's not good if they can support them, but when you say "She doesn't deserve it," then, I'll need further elaboration. You just kind of quoted togepi and criticized his opinion. Opinions can't be wrong, they can only be disagreed with. It's one thing to disagree with him, and say why, like I have, but to just tell him to "stop" is silly.

Yeah, I can't get into DMB either. I'll agree that GaGa could/would have been a good recipient, in fact, if Taylor had lost to her, I wouldn't have been upset, because GaGa had an incredible year in support of that record as well. But, sales wise, and singles wise, Taylor took the cake. I think Fearless had something like 9 singles to reach Billboard, 3 of which went number one, and the re-release, all 6 songs apparently also charted. Highest selling record two years in a row, and the woman with the most Billboard hit singles in the entire decade, not to mention the longest running number one single since 2000 (Love Story), it's understandable why it went to Taylor, too. People may disagree and say it's not the best, but unfortunately, sales typically have a huge say so in award ceremonies; it makes the musical big-whigs jobs a lot easier.

Well, lets face it, Taylor's brand of music isn't extremely original. Her songs, in particular, are original, but female pop/country itself isn't. I mean, female pop/country artists have been around for nearly two decades now.

But, I just want to respond to your response: First of all, you said that because she has stated her influences as traditional country artists, she has a country element to her. Yet, the Jonas Brothers have said one of their biggest influences is Johnny Cash, but there is no "country element" to their music whatsoever (or at least what I have heard of their music). And, you said that the "chord structures she uses, and the occasional fiddle are what give it a country vibe, not her vocals." Do you mean to say that adding a little bit of fiddle, even without a certain style of vocals, will make that song country? Just because a song has "country vibes" does not make it country at all. Furthermore, if you just listen to the lyrics and the themes she uses in her songs, it's clear they do not fit in with those of country legends like Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Waylon Jennings, and even Johnny Cash. I don't recall hearing them singing about how life is a big fairy tale, and how a knight in shining armor will come to save you. The actual messages in her songs are really quite shallow and amateur. And do you really think that if you played traditional country on a radio station anywhere outside of the south, people would listen? The demographics of taylor swifts listeners tend to be girls aged 11-18 and are mostly from more urban areas. If you ever travel to the deep south, like Alabama, you would rarely hear such music being played on their country radio stations.
Just listen to Murder on Music Row by G. Strait and A. Jackson, and what they're saying clearly fits in with the image of Taylor Swift.

You're proving my point, man. I said that she's not country, I said she's pop with country tendencies, fiddle being a tendency. As I said, no one (or at least me) is arguing that she's country; she's clearly a pop artist with country influences/elements. So, while adding a fiddle does not make a song country, it does make it have a country element. And, I don't really care what's played on the radio "down South," or what her demographics are, the point being is that she's a pop star that is influenced by country, and, at one point, had more of a "country" sound to her, but still, was not "country." I had no idea so many country fans had such a bitter edge to pick with Swift for often being categorized as a "country" artist. Believe me, fans like myself hate the wrong categorization just as much as you do. Just makes it another argument that fans like myself have to have with country fans that say "She's not country," and when you say that, I agree. It's just a category that she's been lumped in due to her beginnings and original sound/influences/musical tendencies. So, when people say she's not country, I agree, so I don't see why people feel the need to point out the obvious. You don't think she's country, and neither do. I just think that she incorporates country influences in a subtle manner, such as with a fiddle or a slide guitar, or chord structures. Throw them altogether, and you've got a country song. However, separate, as Swift keeps them, you have a pop song with some country sound. So, thanks for agreeing with me that Taylor is, indeed, not country. But, to say that she has "no country elements at all" is just wrong.

Okey dokey then. for some reason i thought you were saying she WAS country. oh well
No no no no. Not at all. Many people (her fans included, which sucks, I know) will argue that she's as country as country comes, but me, along with others, mainly Tim (Hi again, Tim) have had the same discussion with others that I have just had with you. She's got a fiddle, simple acoustic chord based songs, a slight twang in her vocals, but that's it. That creates a slight impression of country music, but that impression is only an allusion to a true country song, it's still a pop song at heart. Kind of like ska music, it's got horns and such, but it's not classical or big band at all, just has familiar instruments/sounds. So, ska has a "touch" of a big band/swing element, just like Taylor has a "touch" of country.

Yeah, but it was trite and corporate in style.

Drop out of college. You're wasting money.
You claimed Hip Hop wasn't an artistically viable genre. There's a difference between not caring for something and claiming it's devoid of substance. Hip Hop carries with it an Afrocentric epistemology (knowledge, what it is, who it benefits, who believes it, how it was formed, etc.) and ideology. By claiming it has no artistic meaning, you're dismissing a genre that cultivates and nurtures African American expression.
You're an idiot in addition to ignorant. Seriously, drop out.

There is some excellent hip hop out there. I firmly believe there is no genre that has not one good artist, or at least an artist worth listening to, aside from "crunk core."

The one where you claimed it all sounded the same and therefore sucked, sexy. Life's rough for whitey, though. Red Jumpsuit told me in a song.
no such thing
guess what.. you can do that. a genre is similar enough to make a blanket statement about.
You claim an entire genre is bad, and therefore without artistic merit, and it's without depth and diversity. They all sound the same, right? I mean, it's so similar, blanket statments can be made.
God, you're dumb, honey bunny, I hope you're sexy all that retardation.

Hip hop has true roots, rooted in African American culture. Crunk core is rooted in the digital era, and a passing trend. Hip hop has withstood the test of time, crunk core has not. I think we both know the legitimate genre.

I know it's kind of a joke, but for sake of argument. Haha. And in response to her treating her workers like shit, none of us obviously know her personally, but her humble beginnings make her seem as if she'd be rather thankful/appreciative of her status rather than to be the type to throw a coffee in someone's face for having skim milk instead of 2%. I know you'll disagree, but that's the beauty of opinion.
haha i forgot about that.
I wasn't implying that she's a bad person, just trying to say that anyone who likes mainstream music who doesn't like Kanye because "he's a douche" probably doesn't know anything about musicians as a group anyway. a lot of musicians who make any level of prominence, even if they're just a cool local band, can and often are assholes. there are obvious exceptions, my point about Mr. West is at least he seems less passive aggressive and more upfront about things than a lot of people.
lol exactly. Sincere or not, she gets old fast.
i'm sure a lot of that is because she's young.
it's funny because my band has a song called "I'm So Fucking Tired of Taylor Swift" where I make a lot of references to similar things though. It isn't a diss track but more of a take on Jets to Brazil's "I Typed For Miles" though.
Actually i said that she isn't popular just because of racism.
No, I said she owed a lot of her popularity and level of prominence to the fact that her rise as an artist came in country music which is an area in which white privilege is very prevalent. That isn't at all like saying she's popular "just because of racism". but yeah, you apparently can't read.
And he didn't really have an opinion except that nothing is original.
But yea.....
Again, I didn't say this. I said that she recycles themes that SHE uses too often. There's nothing wrong with her writing about romeo and juliet. It just gets tiresome when she makes reference to fairytales repeatedly.

Yeah, I feel you. Most musicians with any "popularity" are typically arrogant, or assholes, so I'll agree with you there. And I agree that it's wrong to hate Kanye because "he's a douche," because the same people saying those things are probably fans of another musician/group/band that are also assholes. I don't really care for Kanye or his music, but I don't "hate" him for being arrogant, like a lot of people do. I don't care for his music, and I don't like him as a person, but then again, I'm not crazily into hip hop, so it makes sense why I don't care for his music, so it's easier to say, "I don't like Kanye, and I don't care for his music." It's wrong to withhold judgment on someone's music based on their personality on/off the stage; hate their music, or hate them as a person, and make it clear when saying what you hate about them, rather than, "I hate Kanye West because he's a douche." It'd be better if people said, "I hate his music and him as a person," or "I don't care for his music, and he's an asshole," or "I like his music but not him," etc. And, if there is any silver lining in Kanye, you hit it head on, with the fact that he is very opinionated and honest with what he thinks/feels, and, I'd rather have someone be that way than have a split personality when cameras are around versus when they aren't.
And, I know that when he ruined Taylor's VMA, went on his George Bush rant, and anything else he did controversial, I probably said, "I can't stand Kanye, he's a douche," etc., but those were just heat of the moment things. Overall, I just don't care for his music, and I dislike him as a person, but there are many mainstream artists that I do support that are probably just as much assholes as he is, and I just don't know it because they aren't as forward as he is.

So, again dude, why are you wasting your college's time? You're taking financial aid from kids who aren't mentally incompetent.
You said there's no good rap/hip hop, so you're saying that there's no quality simply because you don't like it. There's no quality from an afrocentric epistemological expression. You say that because your white privilege allows you to dismiss it.
What I'm saying is, you're an ignorant tool.
When you respond to this, think first. Then remember "I'm ignorant." Then be sure to think about how wrong you are about everything ever.
