View Full Version : Why Can't I Like "The Devil And God"?

I used to love Brand New about 7 years ago, and I'll admit that "The Devil And God" is a solid album, but... I honestly couldn't care less. I'm not even sure if Daisy actually came out or not. Why don't they matter to me anymore?

Oh, no.
I've never really cared for anything they ever did. Plus Lacey seems like a real douche.

Considering that both of you are basically children and of the same generation that got brokencyde and the millionaires on to Warped Tour, and probably haven't heard of half the bands that I was listening to at your age that made everything you enjoy possible, I'm going to discount your apparent rage. You are the reason I feel like I'm in a midlife crisis. Besides, it was a serious goddamn question, although I probably won't be able to take your answers seriously because I already consider you too ignorant to count. The point is, is it as simple as I'm just not into what they're doing and everyone else is, or is the world really getting worse and just happy to latch on to anything that has cred points?
Oh noes! You don't like music that a band makes anymore!
Fair enough, but I feel like it's more than that. Last time I went to see them live, I was just disappointed. All the shows up to and including the Deja Entendu tour were incredible, and then when I saw them a couple of years ago, I was struck with how much better Thrice was, because they seemed like they were actually having fun. Their music just seems like it doesn't have any heart anymore? I'm sure no one agrees, but I'm looking for a solid explanation why, not "OMG I WAS BORN YESTERDAY AND AP.NET SEYZ THEIR AWSOME SO I AGREEEEEE" kthx.

No, that would be the people who are 12-15 right now. What does listening to bands you do have to do with anything?
You are the reason I feel like I'm in a midlife crisis.
Yes. Blame people on the internet for your troubles.
Besides, it was a serious goddamn question,
It's hard to take it seriously when there's no way to answer it. And there are millions of pointless Brand New threads already. We didnt need another one. Also, you posed the same question in the Brand New thread already.
although I probably won't be able to take your answers seriously because I already consider you too ignorant to count.

You're right, and good call on the previous post. Obviously I don't spend as much time on the forums as others do. I guess I hoped I'd find people like myself who'd understand when I was on a serious search for an answer and try and help me out instead of answer me with sarcasm. I'm not surprised, so thanks for feeding my cynicism.
I was looking for more serious discussion like, do fans and bands grow apart? Does that reflect negatively on either party, especially when the connection used to be so strong? What does it mean when an entire generation of fans checks out and is replaced by a whole new generation?
I don't think I stopped liking them because more people liked them. I lost it because they no longer exhibited the things that I loved about them so much, and then I just got confused because all of a sudden, people loved them. Why didn't people love this band already? They'd been around for 7 or 8 years, touring constantly... why the sudden attention? Etc.

Why do you think there has to be a real reason for not enjoying their newest material? I didn't enjoy Daisy very much at all, but I'm not trying to find some great philosophical reason for not liking it. I also don't enjoy very much of the same music I did 7 years ago. As you age and mature your taste in music changes and develops. It's not a big deal or even a bad thing. My advice to you is to focus on the music that you actually enjoy instead of trying to rationalize why you don't like something.
Welcome to AP.net, by the way. If you stick around, and stop making threads like this one, you might get some really cool music recommendations.

Yeah, well, plenty of useless threads are made at least once a month about Brand New, so I guess us regulars of the thread were just sick of it at this point, which is why there were the sarcastic answers. And they are usually just trolls, so that's why we assumed your original post was just that. You probably should have made your serious intent more clear. In any matter, it's never good to put down people for age and expect positive, helpful responses from that.
I was looking for more serious discussion like, do fans and bands grow apart? Does that reflect negatively on either party, especially when the connection used to be so strong?
Jesus, use your philosophical mind to contemplate more useful things? Why does it matter? Yes, fans and bands grow apart. Like, uh, I don't listen to A*Teens anymore like I did in 3rd grade because I discovered better music that was better suited for my tastes and maturity as time passed. Why would that reflect negatively? It's not like a relationship or something. You can stop liking certain music simply because you've grown out of it. You are not obilgated.
What does it mean when an entire generation of fans checks out and is replaced by a whole new generation?
This is a vague question and I'm not sure what you're trying to address.
I don't think I stopped liking them because more people liked them. I lost it because they no longer exhibited the things that I loved about them so much, and then I just got confused because all of a sudden, people loved them. Sudden attention? Maybe because you joined AP.net lol. They don't get nearly as much attention outside AP. And maybe Brand New's fanbase has just gotten bigger because more and more people have heard about them throughout the years? I don't know how recently you mean by "recent." You loved the things they sang about on YFW? okay then.

You're likely desensitized with life. Music doesn't hit you as hard anymore because your life experiences aren't having as much of an impact. Studies show that the music you listen to at the ages of 10 - 13 are likely going to have the most impact on you for the rest of your life.

First, I will say that it's not that I don't "like it." I understand that that may be confusing or contradictory, but I mean it. I do like it, musically, theoretically, technically. It just doesn't impact me at all, not like others, not even like some of my best friends, with whom I share so many tastes. It may be as simple as that, differing tastes, but I feel like it's more, and maybe I'm mistaken.
But I'll also contradict you here, and point you to the fact that I was met with only "OH NOEZ" and other forms of sarcasm. I only referenced my age because it's been such a deciding factor in previous conversations of this nature that I felt like I couldn't avoid it. I also would like to acknowledge your help, though you'll understand if I doubt your sincerity at this moment. Furthermore, it saddens me that this whole website is so populated that I can't posture a question without responses of the sort.

You basically explained away your sarcasm, then used more sarcasm, and then said lol. I never listened to the A*teens. My point is, I never listened to anything I didn't LOVE. It may have been old cartoon soundtracks when I was a kid, or certain bands and movie soundtracks as a teen, but that stuff ruled my life. I've always fallen for whatever pleased my ears. That's why I don't understand this thing with Brand New. TDAG is very pleasing to the ears, but I just don't care for it. I don't feel like I've grown OUT of it, just that it doesn't have the energy is used to. To me, it doesn't have the power of their older material, and I'm just wondering if anybody feels the same way or can offer an explanation why.
Also, any attention Brand New received in the last 9 years seems sudden to me, so please don't be picky.
You're likely desensitized with life. Music doesn't hit you as hard anymore because your life experiences aren't having as much of an impact. Studies show that the music you listen to at the ages of 10 - 13 are likely going to have the most impact on you for the rest of your life.

Ok, something I had been considering but hoping wasn't the case. How depressing would it be to not love any music ever as much as you did the bands when you were a pre-teen? Still, the most viable answer so far. I just hope it isn't true. I've always loved music with the same passion and will swear that as truth, but I figure as I get older and wiser that that passion will be stronger because it is continually further based in musical knowledge as opposed to blind hormones. Thoughts?
By the way, I'm only 23, so forgive me my sarcasm as to age gaps. I meant what I said about it being a factor in previous conversations and it's really been bothering me lately that as few as 3 or 4 years could make such a difference.

There's a difference. You can not love the same music as you did when you were a preteen, but you can still love music as much as you did when you a preteen. It just means you love different music. It certainly isn't all or nothing.

I agree, but what I'm saying is... their previous albums were that kind of experience, so why is this one such an experience to others and not to me, when I'd already been a fan and others are just tuning in?
Also, I agree with the whole "original poster vs. reply poster," which is why I was looking for an external differing/affirming opinion, and so disappointed at blatant sarcasm. It's improved with further posts, but still, you can understand my despair at trying to enter this community based solely on this experience.

I feel like that's a pretty bold statement from someone so young (I didn't understand that sentiment until a few years later). The thing is, while my external circumstances were readily identifiable, my criteria for enjoying a band has, at least to me (and consciously), remained fairly consistent over the years. This is why I'm confused by this situation:
I honestly believe I should enjoy this album based on its own merits, but I really can't. As GOOD as it really is, it just bores me. That's completely different from releases that are SUPPOSED to be GREAT but are simply boring. This really IS good, but doesn't hold any interest for me at all.
There's a difference. You can not love the same music as you did when you were a preteen, but you can still love music as much as you did when you a preteen. It just means you love different music. It certainly isn't all or nothing.
And sorry about the sarcasm. I realized I should have toned it down a bit after re-reading that post.
Thanks for being reasonable, please appreciate my sincerity when I say I mean that. But to me, it seems like I'm loving fewer and fewer bands than I used to, and loving the bands I used to less. I guess it's just a big deal when I can go from saying I unequivocally love a certain band to not being able to say that I enjoy that band anymore. I don't know if you guys read the story about the beer bottle being thrown at the Brand New show, but I was there. That's when I stopped being able to say that I liked them. That's what bothers me. To me, the potential for passion is the same, but nobody is fulfilling it anymore, even bands that used to do so. And only being my age, I really hope it's not just getting older, because that would mean it gets worse from here, and... man, that sucks.

Don't feel too bad. I can't get in to The Devil and God... either. Your Favorite Weapon and Deja Entendu were stellar records, but there's just something completely unappealing about The Devil and God to me. As much as I try to listen and really like it, I just can't. I do, however, love Daisy.

I honestly believe I should enjoy this album based on its own merits, but I really can't. As GOOD as it really is, it just bores me. That's completely different from releases that are SUPPOSED to be GREAT but are simply boring. This really IS good, but doesn't hold any interest for me at all.
You talk about age too much. And I don't know why.

Haha glad I could help you out. You mentioned that you thought TDAG was a boring album, and I feel the exact same way. The only song I really like from that album is "Jesus Christ." Nothing else on TDAG stands out to me, and it's the only song that hit me emotionally. Daisy, to me at least, takes the emotion from "Jesus Christ" and the energy of YFW/DE and combines them to make a damn good album. Daisy was one of maybe 5 albums released last year that I can listen to beginning to end and not skip one song.
And I won't talk shit on you if you don't like Daisy, or any other album for that matter. In reality, it's just one out of millions of albums readily available.

Thank you for providing me with what you actually thought as opposed to something in the vein of "OH NOES YOU DONT LIKEZ BN POZER." Actually, I feel that same way, except I like "Jesus Christ," Archer's Bows," and "Handcuffs." The rest just doesn't do anything for me, even though my musical training allows me to appreciate its quality. The fact that someone who understands my dilemma can appreciate "Daisy" in spite of our previous feelings inspires me to believe that I might be able to do the same, as opposed to someone who'd rather argue with me on a message board.

Anyway...if you don't wanna check out Daisy as a whole, I'd definitely check out "Vices," "At The Bottom," "Gasoline," "Bought A Bride," and "Daisy." The title track is my favorite on the album, the composition is beautiful, and the spoken word samples add so much to the beauty of the song, especially after the first verse when the child speaks.

Thus, I was already on the defensive. Schmidty Says (http://www.absolutepunk.net/member.php?u=192334) actually gave a RELATED opinion as opposed to "you make want to cut myself" or whatever. That's why there was no resistance. If you had said, "I don't care for YFW or DE, but I really loved TDAG because it was such and such," I might've "read more carefully." As it stands, I have my answer: at my earliest convenience, I will try "Daisy," and I will do my best to not have any preconceptions, despite all of the responses I've read this evening.
So yeah, I'm done. And just to fuel the controversy, my top three albums (that I actually enjoyed) for 2009:
1. Tie: Small Towns Burn A Little Slower "So Begins The Test Of A Man" and HORSE the band "Desperate Living"
2. Paramore "brand new eyes"
3. Between The Buried And Me "The Great Misdirect"

Either way, fans can (and often will) grow out of bands, and you're loss of interest is probably just "personal growth". It's no different from not liking a band for the longest time then out of nowhere enjoying them (Me and Thrice).

Dude, everybody's different. For example, a ton of people on this site love All Time Low. I don't. Their lyrics just ruin it for me. But My Chemical Romance is one of my favorite bands, and they get a lot of shit. They are for me what Blink-182 is to many people; they got me into music. So if everyone liked the same music, or if everyone is supposed to, then there would only be one band in the world that would make music that everyone would like. But obviously, this is reality.
