Since it seems it always has to come up.... As a general rule: most people over 20 enjoy SHTS more, while most people under 20 like Burn/Falling better. For me, SHTS is an enormous progression from Burn, to the point where I can't listen to Burn as a serious album anymore... knowing it's the band before they reached their peak. Or maybe it's just a more mature sound (in the sense that it's written for an older audience). Or maybe it's the lyrical references to disease and disgust that did it.
But to answer the main question and not revel in personal taste in style, who knows what happened to him? They've been quiet, at least to a national public about any projects any of them are working on. Hopefully he's involved in some musical project.

just because it's a progression doesn't mean it's good, or even listenable
there have been plenty of musical "progressions" that can't hold an audience because they are simply terrible

First of all new Finch is geanious. Making all thaose dynamics fit is amazing! And I have aRight to say, Because if you know anything about music you would respect say hello to sunshine. I'm a guitarist of 13 years and and I know what it takes to make that sound. I have a drummer of 14 years and is absolutley in love with finch. The world needs more views on music like finch created! I'm so damb sick of turning on the radio and listening to that same old crap, that people like you like. Stupid, lame, predictable music that everyone can bob there stupid little head to in a perfect 4/4 measure of time. finch broke those boundries 10 times greater than any other band I have ever heard. Finch desereves gold plated toilet paper to wipe up that fecies that people like you put on their name! You call crappy music finch when really you are narrow minded and blind. finch is the future and you should be praying for forgiveness to what you said about there music! I don't see you signed to drive through or geffen!

haha, I was just being an internet fool. Your view is correct, SHTS was a lot more technically interesting than WIITB. I just happen to like WIITB better because it has more sentimental value to me.
SHTS was a blatant attempt to mix radio rock with the technical metal/hardcore style of Dillinger. I think if you enjoy technical and heavy music Dillinger will probably be more up your alley and put Sunshine to shame.

Yes I know. But lets talk on a serious musician level here. I know for one it has changed how I write my own music. It has everything from weird, to rocking your face off, to technical music and off beat time signatures. followed by an amazing singer and vocal melodies. What is wrong with people? I just can't get bored with this cd. And yes I have an open mind with music. Obviously!

The cd What it is to Burn featured practically the same song 13 times and the musicianship was very average.
This cd also happens to be in my personal top 5 cd's of all time.
When Say Hello to Sunshine was released it forced me to consider what I look for in a great cd. I realized even though the new cd was much more technical and mature, I value energy, heart, and soul more than I value musicianship.
What it is to Burn was filled with this energy, I felt I could relate to the all of the lyrics, and I also happened to love Daryl palumbo on grey matter and porject mayhem. The cd was produced perfectly.
Finch became aware of the underground disapproval of the instrumentship on the first cd, but in trying to correct themselves, they lost the special energy they once had.
There were songs that I really liked on Say Hello to Sunshine but for me it had no where near as much impact

The same song 13 times??? What cd are you listening to? But its one of your personal favorites still?
Say Hello to Sunshine was a great album. What is is to burn was a great album. Both had their ups and downs to them. What it is to burn will always be my favorite album of all time but Say Hello to Sunshine is up there too. The band was ridiculously talented and if it wasnt for them Thursday and Thrice (to name a few) we wouldnt have wonderful (sarcasim) bands like Aiden and Hawthorne Heights.
Its unfortunate Finch broke up but Nate is doing a show with a new band in California, randy is working on some stuff that supposively sounds like daft punk, Marc Allen and Pappas are in their own bands, Derek is MIA and Alex is sitting at home.
Needless to say I was a huge Finch fan and still searching for a band that comes close in my liking.

I listened to "What It Is To Burn" for the first time in a couple years last night, and I was floored by what a solid album is. It still holds up incredibly well today.
And the same song 13 times? Rediculous. You've got the hyper-poppy "Letters to You", midtempo alt-rockers like "Awake", the slow-burner "Ender", the f*ing crazy "Project Mayhem"... c'mon now! This album actually mixes it up quite well.
And "Grey Matter" is still one of my favorite songs after all of these years. You jsut can't beat the Barcelow/Palumbo throwdown.
Anyway, this album is seriously underrated. Too many people write it off as another Drive-Thru entry in the "pop punk + screaming = money" department, but the use of electronic sounds and more metallic guitar parts actually makes it sound pretty distinct from most of its competitors and copycats.
Of course, this makes it all the more depressing that "Say Hello to Sunshine" was such an atrocity :(

13 songs being the same was an exageration however critics of What it is to Burn complain about every song being in the same key and many of the songs using a similar simple riff
For example listen to the intro of post script and then listen to the intro of perfection through silence
And then try playing them on guitar and you will understand what I mean. The album is filled with such things but really my point is
that I dont care about that
I love every song on that album and don't really give a shit if they are easy to play or similar to each other

i understand where you're coming from...i learned how to play that abum flawlesly and it has the same notes throgh out the whole album for the most part but the combination of the way they use those notes is done really well...i think they tried to get away from that on 'say hello to sunshine'.

They did try to get away from that on Say Hello to Sunshine because they were aware of the criticism coming from the underground musicians. They used Say Hello to Sunshine to prove to the music world that they could make skillful and technical instrumentals as well as anyone the problem is I feel they concentrated more on difficulty of the instrumentals than on how good the songs actually sounded and like I previously said they lost a lot of the energy that was featured in What it is to Burn

I'm the only Finch fan I know personally (I've never met any other person who's liked or even heard of them), and I prefer SHTS over WIITB.. I mean, WIITB was a great album and everything, but it sounded like all the other music out there. SHTS broke the mold; many would say this was a bad thing, but I respect them for that. I guess it was somewhat inevitable that the band split up; with two completely different albums and a vast number of angry fans, what would they produce for a third album? I hope they make it big in other bands..
Speaking of which, what animal does Nate Barcalow represent in The Sounds of Animals Fighting? Cuz their CD came out recently..

all you guys coming on here going oh no shts was rubbish blahblahblah, you make me think youre all what we call in england here minimoshers, minimoshers for those that dont know are those who become punk gothic or grunge like because its becoming a fasion. you listen to the music with no musical knowledge just because you like the 4/4 beat (as matey said before) you have no appreciation for this music because you are not a musician or shouldnt even be listening to this kinda stuff. and i can tell this because of the way you just dismiss all other opinions and believe what you say is the end of convo. unlike some respected people on here who ATLEAST acknowledge that others will like the albumn even though they dont themselves. i have lots of respect for these guys and none for those ignorants who are not willing to accept that.
finch is one of the best post hardcore bands ever in my opinion both albumns were excellent and especially the unreleased bonus bits they did too. why did they have to split.
well hope fully cosmonaut will start releasing some final edits and stuff so that atleast a part of finch can live on.

ok first of all Nate Baraclow is in another band called Cosmonaut
second of all, to everyone that is bashing SHTS you obviously only enjoy nice prepackaged emo/mainstream/indie crap that sounds the same as one of the 100 other interchangeable bands. SHTS is a progression that should have been welcomed with open arms instead of degraded by most of the industry heads because underoath came out with an album much like SHTS and was critically acclaimed. I understand that What it is to Burn was an amazing album but it given the same open minded out look SHTS will blow your mind. So in closing, to everyone that cant stand Say Hello to Sunshine pick the c.d. back up and listen to it completely open minded listen to the amazign guitar or every track the jazz infused A Man Alone, The raw metal mentality that drives the song The casket of Roderick usher. and the 12 other tracks will amaze you with their distinctly unbridled sound

Exactly!
Finch wrote a good album but because you couldn't put it on and sing along to pop-punk chorus's straight after the first listen the majority of people have disregarded it,
You have to be a musical moron to enjoy WIITB over Sunshine.

YES i'm resurrecting this thread now. Purely because me and my friend have been debating this issue since SHTS dropped. What It Is To Burn absolutely blew my mind when it came out along with Casually Dressed by Funeral For A Friend but SHTS was a completely different beast. WIITB was great at the time but it was nothing groundbreaking. Just a band taking a template and doing it extremely well. SHTS was that same band making their own sound. The album may bear similarities to other music but there is nothing like it and hasn't been since. Its one of those great albums that exists in its own little world. I cant really listen to WIITB after SHTS because the latter is such a step up. Gone were the cheesy teenage angst lyrics and in their place were lyrics that still had the anger and bite behind them but in a far more tasteful poetic way. And the music itself is just awesome. Its what the alternative music needed after Relationship And Command. It took what was current realised how far it could go.
Im disgusted at how overlooked and heavily criticised SHTS was. It may not have been as accessible as WIITB and easily digestible but it had far more staying power. It one of those albums that sits in your record collection and will be revisited time after time whereas WIITB was more like a phase. For me anyway.

If you listen to the Falling Into Place EP and some of their demo songs (bury me), you can tell that is the sound where What It Is To Burn came from. When Say Hello was first released, I was a huge skeptic because it sounded nothing like their earlier works, however the CD grew on me. I can compare it to, Incubus SCIENCE, because it is so vastly different than anything I ever listened too. I love what Finch evolved into, even if it was never going back to what they started from, I feel they should of kept it together. Their newer works was just a continuation of SHTS... and that would of been so welcomed more so than them breaking up again for the final time...
When they initially broke up, I will admit I was pissed and sad, but they reunited and I got to see them live one last time. When they left the stage and Ender started, and they all came back out when it hits you, you realize what a great band they were. RIP Finch.
