They've been recipients of a healthy amount of buzz from the blogosphere and yet, no thread. Lame.

A super rad Garage Revival/Lo-Fi Punk band, they have a solid live show and super smooth, short jams. I saw them with the late Jay Reatard in '08 and it was one hell of a show.

Only two - the self-titled from '08 and Everything Goes Wrong from '09.

They have that Girl Trio Garagey sound of The Shaggs, the punk/indie sound from the '80s with a touch of that lo-fi pop/twee. They're pretty bitchin'.

Ha. That's awesome, man. When I saw them, they drenched the room in reverb. It was good times.

Yeah. You're using the word "drone" as a noun, but the definition of drone as a noun doesn't fit the context of the sentence. I get that you're saying it sounds interchangeable, but yeah, wrong use of drone.

I appreciate the posts, but yeah, from what you listen to, this band or any band like them isn't really for you.

Ha, maybe you should put a tiny disclaimer note for me at the bottom of threads I would not enjoy. Kidding. At least I listened though, and gave my (minimal) input. I wasn't trying to troll.

I read that first and was like "what the hell is she talking about?!?" Then, it clicked in and I litterally laughed out loud. Touche.

I just got home from a broomball game and should be sleeping but I'm too hyped up so I decided to try the music boards again.

Um, taylor swift. That's all I listen to. Ever.

I kid, I've been big into the LSTN 7 Mix from urban; kurt vile, the xx.... Also pheonix too. I'm listening to way too much hipster pop recently. I do like Bright Eyes a lot as well.

I prefer Everything Goes Wrong really and I think it's better. I think it's a much more concentrated effort, despite the two sounding relatively similar. What it lacks in catchiness, it makes up in tighter instrumentals and more emotional range (in terms of lyric content).

or people who do!

Seriously, the argument of what is and isn't punk is becoming increasingly moot, especially considering the synthesis of sounds that made that first wave initially and all the splinter stuff that obstructed the original meaning. Punk was primarily aesthetic and ideology.

Vivian Girls sound closer to that '60s Garage Rock sound that became the foundation of the first wave in the '70s than Hardcore and the like.

it's not my place to decide what's punk/not punk; i just feel bands like vivian girls, no age, wavves, etc are marketed as punk to kids who aren't involved in the general punk scene/community.

I'm not big on No Wave and Wavves is kinda boring, but what I like about Vivian Girls is that sense of nihilism that goes into lyrics like "bored so I might as well sleep with you" with hooks that sound like old Shaggs tracks drenched in reverb and distortion.

Hey, maybe they're being marketed toward kids who don't like Punk, I don't know, but I like quite a lot of Punk music and I also dig Vivian Girls. They're certainly not Punk like, say, Crass or The Ex or Punk like Negative Approach or Bad Brains, but they are pretty Punk in that lo-fi Garage sound that essentially served as the skeleton for the first wave in that Seeds, Red Krayola, Shaggs way. Fuck, Richard Hell's a fan of theirs.

Just saying, I'm a fan.

Well I think I liked Damaged best, and the two I mentioned previously. The album definitely improved for me as it carried on, but in the end I don't imagine myself listening to it on a regular basis. When it comes down to it, I like pretty crisp production, and the gritty/sloppy aesthetic of punk* music isn't my thing, though I do recognize that cleaning it up would be a much worse thing to do to the music.

* May or may not be punk, but for all intents and purposes I use the word.

Listening to the self-titled for the first time. Just noticed how short it is. Like it so far. The previous three statements are too punk rawk to be complete sentences.

I like the production because it's virtually non-existent. The noise being slathered over each song just creates the illusion of some sort of tweaking, when it really takes up ugly space and makes you forget about the lack of bells and whistles.

I think his point has legs, in that, they're among those low-fi/noisy hype blog-hype bands pushed out as Punk to kids who wouldn't necessarily care to hear the new Shitty Limbs record. It's indie-chic faux-Punk, and for No Age or Wavves, I could see it, but neither of those two have sloppy-yet-hooky shit-kicking chords and "this is all meaningless" lyrics with a tinge of self-aware self-loathing that Vivian Girls do. They just happen to have a lot of noise saturating their ode-to-The Squires sound. I don't think it's necessarily fair or apt to lump Vivian Girls in with those bands simply because Pitchfork gave them 7s and they also use a bunch of noise.
