Seattle hasn't proved to me they want a basketball team... and I still see them as more of a college basketball city.
Oklahoma City Sonics doesn't have a ring to it though.

yeah, i saw this. and i instantly remembered reading something a few months ago about stern threatening to get the sonics out of seattle.
oklahoma city treated the hornets well this year, but i wonder if that's just a novelty that's gonna wear off.

they better not leave i will be upset. Sources are saying the new owners want to keep the team in the region...and with reports (espn.com) that Sene is playing very well in summer league i was hoping this season would be a turn around.
I am hoping the Team/State is able to work out a deal where the team just moves out to Bellvue or Renton

.....which is dumb, considering UW basketball has only been good for the past 3 years, and then up and down but never a solid contender for the length of the school....The Sonics, on the other hand, have an NBA title and were a power house in the 90's.
This is retarded. The team isn't going anywhere. They'll work it out. They've got until 2010 to start building a new arena. The media making such a huge deal out of something that has 4 years to be resolved...and it will be.

yeah, but it just seems a little sketchy that an Oklahoma City group is buying the team and that the Hornets will eventually be moving back to New Oreleans.

They are in the epicenter of the Big 12 for college basketball, and they seem to be very loyal to their teams (OSU had good attendance even during their shitty year last year). It makes sense for them to have a team really...

New Orleans on the ohter hand, should not hvae a basketball team...nothing about the area or fans screams basketball to me...

Yeah, but the league wouldnt want to lose a team from a market like Seattle. Theyd rather open an expansion franchise in Oklahoma City, which, frankly isnt that great of a market. I know they supported the young surging Hornets but if the team falls flat for an extended period i just dont see the market being large enough to support a team there. The investors who purchased the sonics retrained about 10 people to help weigh their options to decide what would be the most prudent and circumspect option regarding the team and it will come down to either helping renovate Seattle Center, moving to one of the wealthy suburbs or moving the team out of the state.

People are making such a big deal out of nothing. There's just nothing else to report.

i don't see how this is nothing, though. i'm not trying to say, nor do i think, that pro basketball in seattle is nearing it's end and sonics fans better get used to it ...but it's certainly a much bigger story, and a greater possibility, since it's a group out of oklahoma city (who just happen to be losing their team soon) thats buying the team.

But they're honoring their lease until 2010...you don't think Seattle will get it figured out by then?

yeah, i mean who knows ...i just think this is a more suspicious situation then, say, if an ownership group from New York bought the team.
although the Pats were close to being moved to St.Louis and/or Hartford after Bob Kraft took over and look how that turned out.

Actually, I'd be more worried in that case, I'd assume they'd just implode the Knicks and replace them with the Sonics

well the official press conference today stated they have no intention of moving the team and will actively work to keep it in the greater seattle area, so im sure the sonics will remain in washington. Maybe not seattle, but bellvue and renton are right across the bridge

to update this story ...
The new owners said that Seattle has 12 months to work out a new deal and if they don't have it by then, they can opt out and will do so. So ...the pressure is on to get something done.

Seattle's new ownership has ruled out the renovation of Key Arena as an option. Its either a new arena or no arena.

that would stink to see them leave. I hate when teams pickup and move
that would be really freaking dumb and lame if seattle moved. what a great team, not to mention a fantastic city. oklahoma can suck my ballsack.

Sucks the ownership is playing hard ball. I'm still guessing they will stay in Seattle, but, it's gonna be a lot closer now, it looks like the ownership almost wants them to move

The problem is in the financials though. The team loses money because the lease they signed gives all money from concessions etc to the city.
They also have the smallest luxury box section in the entire NBA, which is normally one of the biggest profit drivers for arenas.
The asthetics arent bad though

Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton were my favorite basketball players growing up. Payton played here at Oregon St., and Kemp was just a baller. I collected all their cards.

Pretty insane that Payton was a rookie the year you were born. Can't believe it's been that long.
