I don't know what ESPN's latest trend is...but it's annoying as hell. Domino's, darts...just why? I mean, I understand poker brings them ratings...but it's kind of annoying to watch all these games on a sports channel.

And this announcer for the World Series of Darts makes Dick Vitale sound subdued in describing his game...

I just need football and basketball to start back up or something

yeah i had a rant about this a few months ago. Darts is huge in England and Ireland, as was poker a few years before it was here. I don't see darts getting big like poker here however.

is this even the world series...every matchup is Brit vs US...it's even worse than watching bowling, at least the bowlers attempt some personality
i like poker so i actually watch that sometimes.

It keeps me entertained after midnight...because on some channel, whether it's an ESPN, Fox Sports, or Bravo, there is some form of it to keep my mind taken.

i wikipedia'ed it and some dutchman wins. The cash prize only happens if an american wins or something. Very confusing.

I hate the coverage of all that shit. I really hate Nascar, any type of racing, poker, golf, etc as well. They are NOT fucking sports.

yeah, espn classic shows the main event tournament from various years. I saw one on there from 1995 and maybe one from 1994, but i'm not sure. but if you're used to the poker they show now the old stuffs kind of dull because you don't see anyone's cards. they put the little camera's in in 2003, which is really the only reason the poker boom happened.

I'm pretty sure they bought the rights to that from someone. I thought you meant that they had been televising it for 10 years. I know it used to be on random cable channels in Vegas and Atlantic City.

...I don't think so. All the graphics they put up are in that same exact style that espn used to use. I'm pretty sure they were all taped by espn.

That was somehow interesting to me...probably just because of people shooting each other. But, after a series, I turned the channel, it couldn't hold my attention

I actually played in the World Series of Darts. Unfortunately most people in the US have very little concept of darts outside a pub game context. But to give you an idea of why ESPN would want to televise a tournament like this I'll give you some numbers.

According the National Sporting Good Association report year 2000. Darts was the 18th most popular sport in America with 17.4 million people playing on an annual basis. Darts was ranked higher then, baseball, soccer, football, tennis, skiing, kickboxing, snowboarding, skating sports, and martial arts.

Darts is not a highly athletic sport. But it does require a great degree of coordination on mental focus. And it is rich in history dating back to at least midieval times like most sports derived by survival skills.

Televised darts in the UK has been a huge success for many years. The Embassy world championship routinely draw in excess of 15+Million viewers. And darts is the second highest rated sports show in the UK second only to soccer.

Whether or not darts will catch on as a spectator sport here in the US is still to be seen. But televised events for a million dollars in prime time are a good start. I believe once more of the public become aware of and understand the game it will be bigger then ever.

Oh, I'm not denying the talent of darts. I fucking suck at 501...takes me about 15 turns on a good round. But, considering all the active sports there are...why darts? I mean, sure it may be fairly well played, but that doesn't mean it's a spectator sport.

It's like horshoes to me...fun as hell to play even if you are bad, but who the fuck wants to watch people play horshehoes

this isn't a 'world series' of anything, but following the Introduction ceremony today, is the 2006 Brat Eating World Championship.
You think you would be able to put something better on television on a saturday afternoon.

my god...that's terrible. There has to be a women's soccer game, or a baseball game, or something that isn't a joke to humanity to put on TV.

When did ESPN become the freak show networks as well...leave that shit to MTV2

The only difference is that it would be guys trying to set records or break new barriers, instead of doing stupid shit...

ESPN still has some, though little, integrity left within their shows

yeah...but I like to ignore Jason Whitlock as a human being.

They still do decent commentary on the major sports, and for smaller sports, they do well (Lacrosse, etc). They tried to get too much into the entertainment part of sports really, with that stupid fucking "Entertainment Tonight" rip-off show.

Other than Kornheiser and Wilbon, there is no talking head on ESPN that I was atleast consider their opinion.
Actually, Micheal Smith is decent. He's the only person on ESPN.com that I would read other than the Sports Guy.
It's amazing how ESPN has snatched up every journalist that seemed somewhat energetic on ATH, and had them write for ESPN.com or start a tv show. If only they picked the journalist who knew something and didn't just express an opinion so that people would remember their name (Skip Bayless and abolishing kickers from football).

Does Stephen A. Smith still write for the Philly Inquirer? I hear he's quite pissed that his TV show is on late at night. Hopefully he'll bolt for Fox and I won't have to hear him yelling whenever I turn on SC between October and June
