big d and the kids table, suny fredonia.

3 local bands began the show. i got there at the start of the 2nd one. they were not good and the crowd was not behind them. the sound in the venue was brutal all night, and every time the singer "screamed" my ears were destroyed.

the show was in what i guess is dubbed a "multi-purpose" room, and the "stage" was simply a 2 foot tall riser platform.

the 3rd band was a folk band a-la flogging molly, complete with banjo and violin. again, the sound was awful, they coulda been good if the sound guys knew what they were doing. they played a lot of cover songs, including wagon wheel and drunken lullabies. not bad.

big d. oh man. i was up front at this point and the guy next to me who i had met at the last big d show smuggled a bunch of beers in and we were sharing them amongst ourselves and with david mcwane (singer) and brian klemm (new touring guitarist, of suburban legends, filling in for newly married sean p rogan). all the guys were talkative while they were setting up and really cool with us. always something you want to see.

show starts, first song, steady riot, they get right into it, david goes to sing......vocals arent working. so he just dives into the crowd and crowd surfs until the mics start working. wow, what a great start to the show.

6 songs deep they say the power is out. the band and us in the front row doesnt know what they're talking about, everyhging sounds fine. i guess the pa cut out but the monitors were still working. the band dicks around for a few minutes until it starts working again. a song later, the dean apparnetly called the venue complaining we were being too loud and that we had to quiet down. (he called again later apparently too)

10 songs in someobdy comes out and tells ryan (saxophone) that this has to be the last song because the venue was "loosing power" the band cant really believe this, and i'm still trying to understand how something "loses power" gradually like that. odd. the band keeps playing though, and 4 songs later everything is cutting out. the show ends with no vocals, no guitar, just bass drums, the dollies vox, and horns, and lots of stage diving and singing along. it was a huge party, everything was chaos, so much fun.

Sounds like a blast, bummer it had to end before LAX though. Big D is always great live, I used to go see them all the time back in high school
