It's called pop punk because they're not straight up pop. The bands' songs usually have a "punk" sound too them. For example, New Found Glory (especially their earlier stuff) is heavier than most "pop" bands or artists you'll hear on a top 40 radio station.

T-bag
02/08/10, 10:35 AM
If they had a "punk" sound they wouldn't be pop. Its just a genre the labels made up to market rebellion.

You're exactly right: it is just a label. People argue all the time over what genre to label what band. But the majority of people that listen to these three bands give that label to them, even if you would like to name them "punk". It's sort of like seeing the movie (500) Days of Summer. Some people said it's a comedy, some said a romance movie, so people just call it a "romantic comedy" to make everybody happy. But some people even disagree with that label. So...you can't please everybody all the time

I wouldn't say punk is the antithesis of pop. The Clash had some fantastically poppy songs, and yet they were still punk. As did The Ramones, NOFX, Bad Religion, The Descendents, The Dead Kennedys, Adolescents etc...

Punk was created as an alternative to popular music. Bands such as the clash (post london calling) & Bad religion never really wrote punk music. It was just rock music with Political subject matter. The descendents and adolescents weren't really punk at all, they just got the label because they played "punk" venues, musically they were no different to greenday, they just didn't make it big. As for NOFX well i can give you several reasons why they aren't punk. I'm yet to hear any DK track that is poppy. As for the ramones, they thought they were writing pop music. They just got labelled punk by the industry.

I'd say The Clash pre London Calling were quite poppy. Tracks like Rudie Can't Fail, Jimmy Jazz, Death Or Glory, London Calling, White Riot, I Fought The Law and so on are very poppy. Dead Kennedys also had a few poppy songs, Holiday In Cambodia, California Ubber Alles, Pull My Strings, MTV get off the air and Soup is good food. I don't want to debate the who is or isn't punk thing because it goes on too long, but I'd say you were in the minority if you don't think Bad Religion, NOFX, Descendents and Adolescents aren't punk music.

Relient K's new album is fantastic. And their old stuff is very much pop/punk I'd say.

Agreed on the old stuff being more pop punk. They did a good job with it too, the pop punk thing. Five Score and Seven Years Ago is where I think they started going in a more mature direction, then they kind of took a break with The Bird and The Bee Sides and went back to being the silly Relient k we all knew from Mmhmm and The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek. Now the new album is almost completely out of the "pop punk" genre, and I really like how they're changing a little as the age and mature as a band. The lineup has changed as well, which probably contributed to the different direction.

Forgive me for the bit of a rant, but this is one of my favorite bands and I'm stoked to discuss them :)

Mmhmm had some playful, light-hearted songs on it, like Maintain Consciousness, but there were a few more mature songs, like Life After Death and Taxes and When I Go Down. That's probably my favorite Relient k album, but the sound is way different from Forget & Not Slow Down.

I'd say it's closer to Five Score than anything else they've done just because of how serious it is, but that's not saying much. It's entirely different from any of their previous stuff. The first two songs are similar to MMHMM I suppose, but after that it just gets different. Just listen to it, my AOTY for 2009 for sure.

edit: also, it has one track that is pretty hardcore for a Relient K song. It features the lead singer of Underoath, great song.
