Pretty solid performance. It's just something about these classic rock acts that lack the "punch" that a modern band would have. The music is way better on the album than it is live.

I agree with previous posts that the singing was pretty bad. I thought overall it was very entertaining. First half time show I've actually sat through in years. Usually the half time show is the only time you can step away with out missing some of the game or the commercials.

I think it was pretty good but doesn't compare to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Paul McCartney but sure beats The Rolling Stones half time show.

They've stopped using modern acts ever since the Janet Jackson incident.

they were great, they never metion that their drummer is Ringos son, and the bass player is Pino Palladino from john mayer trio and continuum and battle studies

Actually MTV produced that half time show and ever since the incident it's been Don Mischer Productions and White Cherry Entertainment.

Not great, but they've never been the "tightest" band in the world singing wise at least. I mean they were a punk band and now they're old

The Indigo
02/08/10, 01:30 PM
The mix was pretty bad, so the performance lacked the real power of The Who, who have more "punch" than any pop-punk band has ever had. Also, maybe I somehow missed it completely, but did they not play "My Generation?"

Yes, because we were much better off with the likes of 'NSYNC, Nelly, Britney Spears, etc. Now we have to sit through crap like Springsteen, Petty, The Who, and The Stones.

Yeah, they wouldn't be here, if not for The Who.

I really hope you're joking.

I'd rather see The Who do it than some new artist from some genre I really don't care about, personally. But I don't watch the game anyway. And really, it shouldn't matter who plays the halftime show, it's the game that matters. If someone is going to make a thread with the purpose of whining about who did/didn't play, we might as well start making threads about what bands do/don't come to our towns often enough, who does/doesn't open for them, what songs do/don't play on the radio, etc. Really, this thread just seems completely pointless. It's one thing to make a thread about "let's speculate and talk about what bands we'd like to see" and another entirely to make one about "band x didn't play, waaaaaaaaah!"

To be fair, it's pretty much impossible to make a show/event like that sound good both live AND on TV, especially given the whole Super Bowl Halftime time squeeze. Not trying to justify any opinion about the show, really, but just a thought.

If you're gonna get musicians in their 60's, at least get ones who still have a little energy. Yeah, the Who are pioneers and put out some of the greatest albums ever, but that performance was so flaccid.

Get fucking Iggy Pop out there, he'll show 'em how it's done.

Meh. The album that The Who put out in 2006, as men well into their 60s, was better than a very significant portion of the music that's hyped on this site.

I enjoyed The Who's performance, and I've thought all the artists they've had the past few years have done good jobs. Also a recent band wouldn't have the general appeal that an older artist would have. A band that got big in the last five years wouldn't make much sense when a lot of people who watch the Super Bowl haven't kept up on popular music for longer than that. Even some of the "modern" artists people are throwing around like the Red Hot Chili Peppers are older, formed in 83, got popular in the early 90's.

I wasn't assuming he was, but I saw him mouth words that didn't go with the audio. Unless the timing was off (which I don't believe it was), there was at least some recorded vocals going on there. I wasn't saying it to belittle the performance or anything, just an observation.

no, whiney conservatives did.

but you all are really missing the point. The Super Bowl and everything related to it is supposed to be a giant spectacle, ie: larger than life. The game is built up as epic. Even the commercials, which for any other television program, are "worth watching". The half time show isn't meant to be an amazing sonically pleasant music performance. It's meant to be an extension of this spectacle: look, the superbowl is so big and important that we can get this super important/famous band to play during halftime. So yeah, maybe we could get some band you guys like to play the halftime show and "do a better job", but that isn't the point. you need someone larger than life so that everyone knows who they are. Even if we got someone big now, like Taylor Swift, there would be a portion of the audience that would say "who the fuck is that?" Generally speaking for as long as I've been old enough to pay attention to the super bowl, they pick artists that 99.9% of the viewing population would at least have some knowledge of.

Surely Coldplay would be so boring though. I never watch the Superbowl because it's not a big thing over here but I would have thought something lively or classic would be better? Can just imagine 'Fix You' being played and everyone being bummed out and bored for the second half.

the internet has made it so that "fitting the younger crowd" is much harder because people are more segmented in their listening habits. even mainstream radio is pretty divided. there's obvious crossovers but they're less popular than they would have been in the past, so it makes more sense to go for older bands that everyone knows about, especially when there's more older crowd to be playing for.

yeah i don't see that happening just because of the internet and stuff. besides, because of rock band/guitar hero, a lot of these older bands now have bigger young audiences, so you could make the argument that they have some appeal to young people.
