Just to settle a drunken bet with my friend. Personally i think South Park is hands down the more intelligent show.

Is this a question? South Park is an occasionally brilliant satire. Family Guy is occasionally funny pop culture references.

listen...i like family guy, im one of the few people here that actually still thinks the show has enough quality jokes that it's deserved to be watched pretty frequently...

but like EVERYONE has said so far..

Family Guy is not really meant to be "smart"...you dont really have to "get it" to understand Family Guy.

Now I propose the test of which show is smarter... Simpsons or South Park...well I can get into a pretty good debate on that one. Because Simpsons is DEFINITELY a show where you need to "get it" in order to find the humor in most things.

South Park isn't as overly intelligent as many people would like to pretend it is...occasionaly they make their pretty smart points...but a 12 year old can get their blantant references as well.

South Park contains rather witty metaphors of social events in almost every episode (poop/vomit/sex jokes aside) and so that wins hands down.

Mayby you're confused about the definition of intelligent? How can Arrested Development be cosidered intelligent at all??
Just for the record I love the show, I'm just wondering why you would consider it intelligent.

because of the little jokes, motifs, and dialogue which makes the show so exceptional. It's a show where even if you watch it twice, there will be a ton of jokes that you will miss out on. It's a series where it requires multiple viewings. Thats what makes it so genius. Unlike Two and half men, where Charlie Sheen makes a joke about his brother's awkwardness and thats it, wait for laugh track. The whole reason Arrested Development was cancelled was because it was too intelligent for network tv.

I agree wth you that the show is genius and very funny. And I also agree that 2 and a half men is stupid. I guess that's not really my definition of intelligent humor though since I think a lot of Arrested Development is silly/slapstick type humor. Oh well

South Park focuses on parodying certain cultural events per episode, usually not that many (and if a good amount, they do it seemlessly). Family Guy spends their time parodying a bunch of little pop culture events throughout the episode, strewn together with a very loose plot most of the time.

Most of the Family Guy jokes are set up in a "Just like the time (Random event)" or "Hey Lois, remember that time (random event). That's not to say that its not funny, but South Park seems to have a better writing style where the jokes they make fit into the storyline.

dissident
02/09/10, 08:30 PM
for me it's all in how they treat their audience. smacking you over the head with something and treating them like they're just as ADD and stupid as most of the gags like family guy, or requiring more of a brain to get at least half the jokes in an episode like south park. south park isn't high brow or anything, but it requires more out of its viewers than family guy. as for arrested development, that show is highly intelligent with its writing and humor. everyone i've met who doesn't like it isn't very smart and doesn't think it's funny because they admittedly don't understand 3/4 of it and why it's supposed to be funny.
