There's a rumor that Yahoo Fantasy Baseball will be up today. ESPN's is supposed to be up this week as well.
It's back!

xbrokendownx
02/09/10, 07:10 AM
im down for any and all leagues, especially the pay league
are we renewing Justin's keeper as well?
Well this year, Justin is here, so he could respond. If there's a spot in that keeper league, I want in. Otherwise I'm 100% down for any and all leagues once again.
Obviously we're not doing CBS again for the pay, so what about ESPN?

I am so pumped. Also, I have a question for yall. I am in a keeper league in which we keep six players, two of which have to be pitchers. I know for sure I am keeping Longoria, Fielder, Santana and King Felix. I have a toss up between Brandon Philips, Yovani Gallardo and Andrew McCutchen. I am really, really high on McCutchen and see great things coming from him this season. Brandon Phillips is hurt more than I would prefer but the 2nd base position is always a weak one in fantasy leagues. And Gallardo is a worthy keeper but maybe not with Phillips and McCutchen in the conversation. Thanks, I trust yall more than the "im so gay for this player" dopes at the ESPN fourms.
xbrokendownx
02/09/10, 09:51 AM
i would keep Phillips personally because 2B are a lot harder to find than SP or OF
Yeah definitely Phillips. I was just going through all the positions and there's a huge drop off at 2nd base.
Hey everyone- I know this isn't necessarily an advice thread, but any help would be appreciated. My league gets to pick three keepers, I was lucky enough to have Pujols and Mauer on my team, so they're givens. For a third I was thinking either Cliff Lee or Matt Cain, it was a definite when Lee was on the Phillies, but now that he's on Seattle, should I still stick with him? He was a lot better last year on the Phillies compared to Cleveland, but his complete games are hard to pass up. Thanks very much- I appreciate it.
Yep. Stick with Lee. Mariners are favorites to win the AL West

Thanks a lot- you're right, I'd be kicking myself if I dropped him.

Lee should do much better with Seattle than Philly in ERA, but probably not wins.

I did about five keeper leagues this year, and I want to get in on a one year league.
Hit me up. I'm big with deep minors if you have a keeper slot open as well.
Is this thread gonna be here all year? if so, I'll pop in rather often.
it's actually going to be closed later this week. sorry.

Lee>>>Cain imo fantasy wise. Especially this year on the Mariners, a team that is looking really good.

Thanks! Lee does seem to be the way to go.
Yay baseball season my favorite! I am interested in being apart of a league here on AP H2H or roto doesn't matter.
Keep Lee he will have way more run support than Cain

i've done ap pay leagues and free leagues for other sports like football and basketball, but I am definitely interested in a keeper league whether it is fresh draft or taking over an existing team. PM or let me know if any spots are open. Again, i'm down for whatever and am active every single day.

no, no.
Last year you had kept 4 guys. You can keep 3 of the same guys, but you have to keep 1 guy on last year's roster who you didn't keep for last year's draft.
I mean you keep 4 brand new guys too, but you'd have to keep 1 new keeper from your roster.

Like the team. Upton's gonna be huge this year, and Davis could bounce back. Pitching is all K's. A little risky though. I like Drew a lot. High upside team.

I wouldn't say that. It's definitely risky, but i've got a lot of high upside guys. Luckily, it's not my real team of course haha.

Yeah, once I realized all of my targets were gone I just went for all-or-nothing type of guys. If this were my team I think I'd be able to count on Upton, Sandoval, and Lind to have good years, but the rest are a roll of the dice. I personally don't have much faith in Stephen Drew but I totally looked over SS.
Stephen Drew is one of your better picks, depending on what round it was.

Here's a stat that might win you over.
Two years ago, his first full year, when he hit 16 home runs...
He had the highest AVERAGE HOME RUN DISTANCE of any players.
Now, he's matured two years since then.
He could go 35-20 this year, with an A-Rod caliber prime.

He has an incredible amount of talent, but so does his brother BJ. How has that worked out for him so far? I see it, I just think he's still too raw to be a 1st/2nd round fantasy talent. He will still strike out a ton

Justin's K rates are already lower than BJ's are. Plus he's younger. BJ is more of a speed guy while Justin is the power guy.
Next year he'll be a top 5 pick. Easy.

i'm with justin. i've found that when i tried to have a team of younger guys and relied more on potential and upside rather than "proven" success i've never done as well as i'd liked. i know it's a bullshit concept when you think of baseball, but i've found it to be true in fantasy.
i see maybe 7 guys who are that "proven" type of guy, where you absolutely know - or have a damn good idea - what they're going to give you.

I'm not trying to talk down to anyone - but it's just about taking the right risks. Figuring out who's undervalued and who's likely to regress. The more players you decide you don't want on your team, the better pool you have to select from as everyone else takes them. Also important to target high upside players with high downside, if that makes sense.

yeah, makes sense for sure. i was trying to get some discussion going about the flukey nature of fantasy sports in general, maybe getting into different things you do/everyone else does to prepare for a draft. especially since we all like to get the upper hand hahaha. for some reason i take it very seriously -- probably more than i should.
i try to look at the top 25 at each position for that year and break them down into tiers then value them from there. your advice about deciding who you DON'T want is pretty good - i'll have to try that.
for me, overdrafting a pitcher in a round earlier than the 6th just hasn't worked. i either a) end up missing out on elite players at up the middle positions or b) find that i can get a combination of guys in the later rounds that are just as valuable.

if that was going to be your team, you'd be relying on/hoping to get so much out of so many guys just to keep you afloat offensively. different strokes for different folks but really, what can you expect out of drew/tejada and especially gonzalez/laporta? would you hope this would be the year they break out and, combined, give you beltran-like production until he comes back in, what, june? like deth said - your pitching selections weren't bad. it just seems like you're hoping to be ahead of the curve or catch lightning in a bottle with a few of those guys. there are a few question marks and if they don't pan out there's really no back up option that can aid in carrying your team unless you unload a pitcher.
i see what you did with youk's 1B/3B flexibility by being able to bench beckham which wasn't a terrible move - especially if pena comes back healthy.
I guess we don't have the same direction in fantasy sports. I target high upside guys or guys who fall who have great value (Pena in the 9th round, Lilly in the 2nd to last round). I find that if you take those risks, if they work, you will most likely become a contender. Yeah I'm taking a chance with Montero at catcher, and who knows if Zobrist can repeat (I'm a believer). Also, Gonzalez's splits at Coors and post all-star break are mental, why not take that chance, especially when I drafted him in the 11th round.

haha i think that's pretty much what it comes down to. it's just been my experience that taking risks has never worked out. it could be because i took the wrong ones or i was ill-researched in years previous. not knocking your choice (it was a mock, after all), just trying to give some explanation as to why you're getting shit on kinda hahaha.

for me, overdrafting a pitcher in a round earlier than the 6th just hasn't worked. i either a) end up missing out on elite players at up the middle positions or b) find that i can get a combination of guys in the later rounds that are just as valuable.
if theres a stud still hanging out in the 5th who's fallen through the cracks, would you pick him up? or still go position? out of curiosity.

i think it would depend on how my team and the draft itself is shaping up. if i think i'm covered sufficiently at the positions i value the most by that time - or could afford to skip out on one, depending on who was available - and for some reason someone like miguel cabrera is around, i would probably grab him. chances are he could make whoever i had drafted or had in mind at 1B either a) obsolete or b) one of them becomes nice trade bait so i could upgrade somewhere else.

Yeah of course, high risk/high reward moves are good, but like a stock portfolio, you have to limit them.

J. Santana

B. Phillips

keeping a closer in any league is a stupid move. It is like drafting a closer in round 4 of a draft.
I was actually thinking about Broxton, because he's one of the best closers and there is really no one else i'd want to keep, and when you guys are drafting closers, I'll draft a hitter or a starter, but I'll probably go with Ellsbury, unless someone wants to trade for him.

in a h2h league with k rates/saves/whip/era, how would having broxton be a dumb move. it's not like he's some average, mediocre closer. if you expect him to match last years production, why not keep him, especially if your iffy on who to keep anyway.
not saying he should be a pick in the first round or two, but he definitely has value, imo.

we are in roto, and broxton was 12th iin the majors in saves. I'd give him more value cause of saves, late inning wins cause of blown saves, but his ERA wasn't even top 5 for closers.

and like i said, its not like there's an obvious clear-cut answer on who he should keep. i still don't see how keeping him would be some huge mistake. i could see an argument for broxton, thats all. your strategy to keep someone else and try to replace broxtons production later in the draft may work too. it may not.

yeah but Ellsbury gives you a decent average, obp, scores nearly 100 runs, and steals 70 bases. Home runs and RBIs from him are a bonus and he helps you in more categories than Broxton, as a keeper.

i'm not arguing his past production, i just think he's bound to be a complete dud one of these years and i dont want to be the one to have him. just a personal thing.
and where on yahoo did you find he was rated 80?
on cbs's draft kit (http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasybaseball/draftcentral): 38 (above sizemore, granderson, bay, both uptons, votto, mccann, zimmerman...) -- round 4
on yahoo's cheatsheet via rotowire (http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/draftkit): 48, (above sizemore, zobrist, nelson cruz, verlander, cliff lee, werth, upton, rollins....) -- round 4

The only thing that crumbles Cruz's value to me is Ron Washington. He should be able to maintain 30HR power and 25SB but if he strikesout alot like he did last season he won't be getting as many AB's.
Cruz doesn't strike out like Chris Davis does. I think he should be okay.
Cruz doesn't strike out like Chris Davis does. I think he should be okay.
You do know Davis is batting in front of Cruz.
No I don't know that and how do you know that?
The Rangers plan to bat Chris Davis sixth this season, according to Anthony Andro of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Texas manager Ron Washington would prefer not to stack his right-handed batters in the lineup. Nelson Cruz, according to the proposed order, would drop to seventh, with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and shortstop Elvis Andrus rounding out the bottom of the lineup.

What do you mean, how do I come up with that?
I'm not going to keep 3 outfielders and Utley and I'm certainly not keeping Bay in Citi Field (not even because of the home runs). The rest of the Mets lineup is virtually garbage and I don't expect huge runs scored/rbis (team oriented stats) from Bay this year. So then, I turn to average and OBP. Youk is higher in both of those categories. He's also a right-hander hitting at Fenway.
Virtually, I am keeping Kemp over Bay. Also, 3B is thin, so I will have Youk play there, if need be, instead of keeping a dime a dozen outfielder.
QuikTrig
02/19/10, 07:34 AM
and youk opens up the trading block for the shmucks who fuck up or end up with a dud at 1B/3B. versatility is huge. bay on the other hand will end up being a hassle to trade, regardless of his performance, just because of his name. you're probably going to get underpaid either way (as everyone is coming to some stunning revelation that bay may not be a top-tier OF, as if its some inside info)

As long as we are on the subject of advice for keeper leagues, I'm having a problem with my sixth keeper as well. Right now I have Ryan Zimmerman, Justin Upton, Adam Wainwright, Ian Kinsler, and Joey Votto (it's a pretty deep league with many teams). I'm in debate for my final keeper though between Jason Bartlett (career year last year, but can he put up similar numbers?), Chris Carpenter (injury history, but so solid last year), or Michael Young (no longer a middle infielder which hurts his value...only playable at third or utility). It is worth noting that in my league we play 5 Middle Infielders, so SS and 2B are merged.

Definitely Carp.
Speaking of, I did a mock draft on Yahoo last week and his ADP was 35.3. Felix's was 36.3.
I was definitely leaning Carp. But him over Felix Hernandez? There is something seriously wrong with that.

Which Upton? If Justin, then your team is probably a point higher than if BJ.

Yeah I know right after I got him I totally forgot I had Crawford and was kinda upset with the pick don't like having outfielders from the same team like that but oh well.
don't expect to be in any of our leagues.

Not sure what that means I probably have one of the best team in my league and it's a auction draft now a snake draft. My starting pitchers are easily the best.

Justin will give you almost an equal amount of steals with 15 more homers and .050 more points on the batting average. I'm sure you are aware of this, but I'm just saying that he is equally as good in that department.

Yeah Justin is better but I got BJ for 15 points while Justin went for 24 points.

ah, auction league. understandable. i've only done those for NBA drafts. my keeper league draft should be pretty interesting this year though.

Yeah it was my first auction league so didn't know what to expect thought I did pretty well for it. Probably overpaid for Beckham and a couple other but I like my team we shall see how they do.

In my league, we only get two bench spots, so when two or more of your players go on the DL, you have to drop one of your bench guys to keep your DL guys...I had Beckham all year last year, but then Kinsler and Dye both went on the DL so I had to drop him because he wasn't playing. The next week he got called up and started demolishing the ball. It kills me that I didn't keep him, haha.

Yeah I paid 12 points for him which is kind of a lot I feel like, but he will put up solid numbers. Yeah we have 3 bench spots and 1 DL spot so you can keep your guy if he goes on the DL in real life. I was so stoked to get Zambrano with my last pick surprised no one took him yet.

I hope Zambrano busts, haha. Sorry, but I hate the guy. If he goes back to form that could be a great pick though. I love Beckham and think he will be a top tier player by the end of the year. Think Longoria in 08.

Those aren't bad keepers at all. I'd rather have them than Tulo, Howard, Cliff Lee and Kershaw which is what I have.
