The Format (http://www.absolutepunk.net/theformat) sold 12,502 copies (the total of 10,793 reported earlier was wrong and will be corrected by Soundscan) of Dog Problems in its first week and will debut at #77 on the Top 200. Congrats to them!

I knew this had done really well. I went to Best Buy on Monday to buy a copy, and they were sold out and had just ordered 18 more copies. That's a good sign.

that's awesome! i read somewhere that since they did most of the release on their own they get to keep 6-7 bucks per sale as opposed to 1 or 2 dollars.

I tried to buy it...
But when the guy at Best Buy looked up The Format in the computer, they didn't even have the band in there. Even though they had Interventions and Lullabies in stock. :(

Is it wrong to say I'm really surprised? Is that good, rr is 77 average for a band of their popularity calibur?

If that number includes the downloads, it's a poor first week of sales...but I'm assuming it doesn't, so overall a pretty good first week. Granted they have good distribution, but they don't have a label pushing them, so 13k is pretty good.

Think of it this way, the best FBR opening week is about on level with this...and they have quality distribution and a huge hype machine. The Format only had the distro part of that really on their side.

that's really good. especially considering they released it on their own imprint.

Generally when sales figures are announced I skip those stories as it doesn't really interest me, but this band thoroughly deserves to sell this many records, and here's to many more.

is it too early to call this album of the year?

When I first saw the figures I was a little surprised thatthe sales weren't higher. However, if we take into account that The Format is going to be calling the shots, they will be able to continue implementing fresh forms of promotion for this album. In the traditional label setup, the first few weeks of sales are extremely played up. The Format can and will continue to sell consistently, and that's exciting. I'm so interested in where bands like this will take the industry in the coming years...

Its my favorite album in probably the past 2 years. Its up their on my all time list if I ever got around to making one.

I read in an interview they'd like to sell 30,000 to cover the cost of making this cd and to have some money to make the next one, at least I think that was why.

Congrats to them and I hope they sell many many more.

07/19/06, 04:39 PM
I knew they wouldn't sell more than 20K. It would've been great if they did though...

But that is a very strong showing with them having hardly no promotion other than sites like this one. I think though they'll break 30,000 overall. The way they are doing this totally reminds me of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and they had very good sales doing their own thing. Bands like this are where the future of music is heading so it'll be fun to sit back and watch what happens.

Impressive for a band who released their album on their own label and no mainstream play. They'll sell a lot more, but for snagging a cushy spot in the top 100, congrats to those guys. Proud of 'em!

I don't think so. Let's just say, someone's gonna have to produce something pretty special to top this.

Over to you, HiPV...

This is made even sweeter by the fact that I heard in an interview that with the new setup they would make more money than they were with the major, I know that doesnt matter but they deserve everything that comes their way
