Surfer Blood - Astro Coast
Record Label: Kanine
Release Date: January 19, 2010

Who?

Surfer Blood are a much buzzed-about indie rock band from West Palm Beach, FL. Their debut full-length Astro Coast follows their highly praised single "Swim", which was released late last year.

How Is It?

As you might imagine, it's yet another interpretation of classic surf-rock, but as crowded as this scene seems to have gotten lately, most of its practitioners do the style quite well. Surfer Blood are no exception, and their varied approach makes for an intriguing album. "Swim" has about as much bombast as you'll find on an indie rock single, while songs like the opener "Floating Vibes" display a Teenage Fanclub-like expertise with catchy, buzzing riffs and sweet, summery melodies. Not content to be painted as one-dimensional, they take a page from the Vampire Weekend playbook on "Take It Easy", with its quirky rhythms and percussion.

Given their fuzzed-out sound, it's easy to make comparisons to Pavement's skewed lo-fi pop, and while that's occasionally an accurate depiction, Steven Malkmus and company were never in the business of writing in-your-face hooks like "Twin Peaks", which would almost feel at home in a cheesy '80s movie. Like Pavement, though, as well as the sunny '60s music it semi-imitates, it's prime slacker rock that refuses to take itself too seriously. "Never could hold still for long and I could never hold a job. Coupled with a weakness for cocaine and liquor not much you can do for love," vocalist John Paul Pitts sings on closing track "Catholic Pagans". No, I suppose not. And when he sings "Take it easy on me," on the deliberately unraveling "Slow Jabroni", it pretty much sums up the whole laid-back tone of Astro Coast. It's a charmed life, and with Surfer Blood writing the soundtrack, even the tiny bitter pills become that much easier to swallow.

I love this record, though I heard their really not that great live. Anchorage is such a good song too. I see this getting tons of plays during the summer.

If you like this you should really listen to Real Estate's self-titled album. It's fantastic.

I don't know how you can review this band without a mention of Superchunk.

I really enjoy this album. If people dig the big 90s throwback guitars on this album they should check out Japandroids.

I actually dig this more than Japandroids, if that says anything.

As a whole I would say that, too. There were a few songs off of Post-Nothing that blew me away, but Astro Coast is a much more dynamic album. I could see these guys doing big things this year.

That was my bad. I was comparing the two based solely on their guitar sound on same of the tracks.

surfer blood > real estate
and i saw a vid of them live somewhere. they weren't bad at all. the vocals were fantastic. my only problem with them is every one of their songs evokes another band. take it easy is great but without a little band called Abe Vigoda it wouldn't exist.

live.

Really been digging this album; I've said it a thousand times, but "Take It Easy" could make them huge. This will get so many plays for me over the summer.

I've been listening to this album non-stop since I randomly stumbled upon it on Lala. Originally I had a hard time listening to anything but the first 2 tracks, Floating Vibes and Swim, but now I love the whole thing. The ones that really took a while to catch on for me were Slow Jabroni and Take It Easy. Catholic Pagans is easily their best song, with Anchorage in a close 2nd.

Everytime I hear this album I long to be able to play it on Rock Band, lol.

I fully concur. The album art is awesome but the music is somewhat forgettable. I don't think I've really given it a fair shake though. I got Yeasayer and I've been obsessed with that which is coming off the heels of my obsessions with the Vampire Weekend, Spoon, and Midlake. This is gonna be a good year for music.

Great CD...I may have been slightly inebriated when I saw them live but I thought they were spot on...They also had different members and were called something else at the time. Haven't seen the new lineup yet.

Oh man. I felt like this album, Astro Coast, was feeding a little bit off of the whole surfer-rock craze.

Where as, Japandroids are just doing whatever the fuck they want. That gets more respect from me.

And "I Quit Girls" is an amazing closer for Post-Nothing. It wrapped the whole thing up for me.

I don't understand Japandroids at all, perhaps that's my problem.
