So I've had this conversation with friends before but am curious about AP's take. Who would be the modern equivalent of some legendary actors. Here are a few comparisons I think are apt for an example:
James Stewart = Tom Hanks
Likeable everyman who got his start in romantic comedies and uplifiting fare but proved himself to be arguably the actor of his genration.
Steve McQueen = Daniel Craig
Besides the fact that they kind of look the same, they're both known primarily for action movies, but occasionally break out a dramatic role and knock it out of the park.
Cary Grant = George Clooney
Actor known primarily for a pretty face and sense of style at first who takes people a bit by surprise when he shows he has serious acting chops.

James Dean - Brad Pitt. Not so much these days, but definitely when we was younger and first getting big (1991-1995). He had the handsome, rebel without a cause look and attitude down pat.

Peter Lorre = Steve Buscemi. They both typically play the weird supporting actor roles, often serving as the comic relief.
Robert Mitchum = Gary Oldman. They are most widely known for playing villains and anti-heroes in dark movies, both very underrated in my opinion.
I'll try to come up with more.

I like Lorre/Buscemi. They both have those eyes.
The only reason I'd say hmm to Mitchum/Oldman is that Mitchum was almost exclusively a leading man.

I think of Clooney more as a modern day young-Warren Beatty.
Others...
Orson Welles - Vincent d'Onofrio (a bit too easy, yes)
Richard Widmark - Tim Roth
Robert Mitchum - Russell Crowe (this one extends beyond acting)
Richard Burton - Ewan McGregor
Can we get some ladies going?

Also, I'd like to see someone match Johnny Depp to a classic actor. I don't think it can be done with a single name. My thought was a combo of Chaplin and Flynn.

I always thought Redford - Pitt.

I see Keifer Sutherland as a counterpart to James Cagney though not nearly as good.

I would say Meryl Streep = Kate Winslett, but that might be too easy.
I agree with your Beatty/Clooney comment.

Haha I'll take your Streep - Winslett comparison and go back farther and say Davis - Streep
Maybe, Kelly - Kidman

I'd go with River Phoenix for James Dean though obviously Phoenix wasn't as big a star

Really like that Lorre - Buscemi comparison.

Probably because Pitt is the spitting image of Redford.

I like Pitt/Redford better than Pitt/Dean. Comparing Pitt to Dean really doesn't do Pitt justice since he is/was a better actor than James Dean ever was. Redford has the combination of looks and acting chops that works much better as a compatison to Brad Pitt.

Charles Laughton = John Goodman. When I watched The Private Life of King Henry VIII, I couldn't help but think that Goodman would be the perfect replacement for Laughton.

The best I can come up with is Jeff Bridges. I don't really know why, either. It just sounds right.

Dude just cause D'Onorfrio looks like him. Similarities end there.

And I like Streep-Davis. Though Streeps had more consistent success than Davis did.
Ed Wood - Uwe Boll
Have you seen an Ed Wood?
Who would someone match for Peter O'Toole?
Nobody. There is no matching Peter O'Toole.

They both have that brooding quality, something lurking beneath a cool exterior. d'Onofrio played him to perfectly as well.

True, but Welles was also a blinding visionary whose career was crushed under the weight of his own ambitions and enormous ego. Which makes it hard to find a really good counterpart. Though if D'Onofrio ever gives Kermit and friends the stadard rich and famous contract, I'll take it back. Haha.
That's the conculsion I have come to.
He was just way too versatile. He's famous for really straight dramatic roles but he could also be hysterically funny and he even pulls of a musical rather well (Man of La Mancha isn't half as bad as people crack it up to be).

Bumping because I recently decided I kind of like:
Humphrey Bogart = Harrison Ford
Both known as tough guys and more as "movie stars" than actors, but had serious chops. Dawned on me while watching Sabrina. Only problem being Ford was known for being handsome, and Bogart was anything but.
