Donkey Kong Country was a shallow piece of shit game in 1994, and still is. The graphics are pretty by SNES standards, and the game launched Rareware's career, but the side scrolling run and jump gameplay was nothing new and had been done much better by games released before it. Probably one of the most overrated video games of all time.

In any case, Super Mario Bros. gets my vote. Probably the most influential game of all time, and will forever be heralded a classic until the end of time.

Edit: To each his own. Even though it isn't innovative or anything, I love the world they have created, I prefer the controls over Mario, I prefer the characters and I prefer music, for me, better than Mario in every aspect.

I loved Super Mario World too (I never had an original NES), but Donkey Kong was just so great. From the play, to the story, to the bonus stages, to the amazing colours and visuals, to the music. I used to know the sound test cheat and I'd just put the music on and listen to it, because it was so good.

Both SMW and DKC (specifically 2) were awesome, but I had to go with DKC2. The music in that game tops it for me. Now that I downloaded it for the Wii, I was FINALLY able to beat it, thus closing a very significant chapter in my life.

yea im aware of this. what i meant was mario was the star protagonist of the original donkey kong games and his independent series was and is the most successful video game series ever. so when donkey kong country came along it was more or less a spin off as a result of the success of mario.

That pretty much sums it up for me. Donkey Kong Country on Super Nintendo was probably the funnest game I've ever played growing up. I liked Mario 64 more than DK64, but the Super Nintendo games for Donkey Kong dominated. Mario as a franchise though has so many games and so many good games for that matter that nothing could even come close, let alone Donkey Kong. What's the last DK game that's come out.. the only one I can think of is that stupid Bongo thing. Mario is still releasing pretty solid games

I want to say Mario on this one because the games are great, HOWEVER, if I had an option between new Mario games or new DKC games I'd take DKC any day of the week! The new Mario games are fun but I don't think the levels/worlds/enemies are as exciting as they used to be. DKC has always had amazing levels/characters/secrets.
