It's happening: You're listening to a record you've owned for years. The same songs play, you sing along, and then suddenly it hits you - something about the way you hear it completely changes your view of the record. Every song somehow makes more sense, every melody drives a little bit deeper.. it's an amazing feeling. I've very recently had this experience with John Mayer's Heavier Things. I always appreciated it as a record, liked it, but never fully connected with it for whatever reason. Now ever since it hit me, I've listened to it every day for the last few days.

Anyone else ever have this experience with an album?

No Ceilings...........lol, and yes, I'm serious.

Also I Am the Movie.. I don't know why, it just didn't do it for me the first time around.

Fugazi - The Argument
The Replacements - Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out The Trash
Pixies - Doolittle
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
The Lawrence Arms - The Greatest Story Ever Told

It's one of the best feelings ever to come back to an album you initially disliked and realize what you were missing out on during the first couple listens.

I have an Ipod adapter in my car and, I swear, this album has been on repeat for the last month

Usually I download albums because they get rec'd to me, and then they just sit there for months. That happened with the Mountain Goats, and I had never really listened to them before. I spun the record a couple times, and kinda hated it, so I stopped trying. Then I had to listen to them for something else, and now I really love them. It's insane.

But that happens to me a lot. It's odd.

Ryan Adams - Gold
Baroness - Red Album
Husker Du - New Day Rising
Down - Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow

I liked these on first listen but I really didn't get into them until coming back to them later. They're four of my favorite albums ever now.

It's so phenomenal. And considering the mood I've been in, it was so fitting.

Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place.
At first I really didn't get it, but after a couple times I started hearing it layer by layer, and then how all the small sounds blended together with everything else. I was pretty amazed at how much detail one song can have, and how much the small things affect a song. I guess it gives another layer, or texture in a way, maybe like sub-plots. I don't know, it just sounds cool...haha

Definitely. I'm an EITS listener as well, and especially in post-rock I find I'm usually experiencing that 'layering revelation' kind of thing, where bands are putting out these beautiful songs that aren't at all meant to be fully comprehended the first few times you hear it. Good stuff

Volcano by Gatsbys. Took me so long to appreciate everything going on in that album, but about two months ago it all just started sinking in. Now I can't get enough. Weird to be listening non-stop to an album I've owned for five years.

For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver. For whatever reason I sort of dismissed it at first, I didn't think it was all that special. Then one day one of the songs got stuck in my head, I think it was Flume, and I just had this urge to listen to it. Ever since, I've been in love with it.

this this this this this this fucking this.

although i will say, i was so much more moved by the unofficial live album that's around the interwebs. The live version of wolves almost made me cry. For Emma, Forever Ago will always be one of the most personal and involving records i've ever listened to and will always be a favorite.

Also for this thread, see: (anything) Circa Survive (puts out). Incredible music (in my opinion), but impossible to fully understand the first or second listens through

this, all the way. I was rec'd it at first, heard it in my friends stereo, bought it from iTunes. Sat on my iPod, getting only about 5 listens; on some trip home from playing hockey in NJ, I decided to put it on. 100 listens later, it might be my favorite post-rock album, or tied with Caspian's Tertia.

Caspian's Tertia.

Caspian = YES. I'm a huge This Will Destroy You fan myself. Saw them live last year and came to the conclusion that the "destroy" in their name is pretty legit

This happened to me last year with Never Better. I had listened to it a few times, and the only song that really stuck with me was Drumroll. Then, the next time I listened to it something happened and it all just clicked. I realized how fucking awesome that album is and it became my #4 of the year.

the same thing happened to me with Devil and God. Now I can't stop listening to it for the last 3 years
