There are *zero* threads about her, I searched.

Anyway I think she is a fantastic singer, and she writes all her song lyrics (unless doing a cover), shes very talented.

I suggest everyone pick her her "Butterfly" album, released in 1997, seriously one of the best Pop/RnB albums I've heard. Also if you're a new fan, trying getting her Greatest Hits, its a nice package and indiciation of her music.

She has released some really teriffic songs, but I don't really like much of what she's done since Butterfly.

tbh I agree too, I liked Emancipation Of Mimi though.

Butterfly and Daydream are such amazing albums though. Breakdown has got to be one of the best songs, lyrically, I've heard. Plus her voice was incredible those days, especially on her debut album (Vision Of Love = FTW)

Yes, she can not sing as well as she use to. But she was never like this

Watch this live performance of her song Hero, back in 1996, she sounds amazing from start to end esp on the bridge.

All this does is prove my point

Edit: Also not a fan of vocal gymnastics

How so? its a live performance, you can't cut/paste vocals.

Shes had more simplier vocal performance, if you want to hear, try this song Looking In:

The lyrics are also wonderful.

"Fantasy" is the jam. She has so many #1 hits it's ridiculous.

It proves how fucking lazy she is now. She has an amazing set of pipes as the video showed. But chooses to be a lazy ass pop star not focusing on writing good songs. As proven with her last album, she hasn't got any number one songs. And debuted at number three. Behind Paramore. She is on her way out

I remember my music teacher in 8th grade (1999) talking about how Mariah was so talented but wouldn't be able to last because the way she sang put way too much stress on her vocal chords. Looks like she was right

I agree, her last albums havent been up to scratch, everything shes released in the last 10 years has been mediocre overall.

But her 90s material is seriously amazing, Butterfly has genius lyrics, all written by Mariah, its her best album and I highly recommend it to any music fan.

"Someday," "Always Be My Baby" and "One Sweet Day" are some pretty essential 90's jams.

The Emancipation of Mimi is her only cd I have..Thats a good one, & I like lots of her old singles. She just annoys me now.

old mariah will always be a classic but new mariah just aint even coming close to cutting it...

mariah in her prime is probably one of the best female singers of all time :D

Eminems talented I must admit, as a song tho Obsessed is superior his his diss track.

This has to be my favorite Mariah song, the lyrics are gorgous, and listen to it all, because her voice soars in the bridge. This shows how amazing Mariah is as a songwriter, producer and vocalist.

its cool to enjoy pop music but why do fans of that music sometimes feel the need to signify that they "write their own lyrics" or whatever? i understand that this is significant in context of other top 40 music considering many similar artists do not do the same, but honestly you're pointing that out to a community of music fans who hold every artist they listen to to that standard.

im only really bothered by this because some pretentious asshole who lived in my dorm hall last year, who would for no reason tell me he disliked songs that i put on before he'd even heard 20 seconds of them, used to always say "but she writes all her own songs! shes a genius" in defense of taylor swift. i was like, dude, some of the bands i listen to do all their own production and mixing, THATS extraordinary. any artist i respect should be writing their own shit, especially if people call them an "artist" and not just a musician or vocalist.

I understand your point.

The reason I point out Mariah writes all her own songs is because many people don't know/assume she doesnt, people always think of her as the girl with the voice singing ballads. From what I have seen, Pop has a negative stigma and many fans of other genres think of Pop as manufactured, this is why I say Mariah writes her material, to clear up misconceptions people have about her. I know it isnt anything extra-ordinary as a lot of musicians write their own songs, but I feel Mariah does an excellent job with her lyrics and she doesnt get enough recognition.

I dig her early stuff like everyone's mentioning. I defiitely stopped caring when Butterfly came out though. Now she's a joke. (In my opinion).

Yep, agreed.

There are those who can sing but feel that they prefer to have songs written for them.
Just as long as the song is good and the vocalist can do it well, that's what people like it for.
But writing your own music means you can considered 100% your own.
