HIM - Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice
Record Label: Sire/Reprise
Release Date: February 9, 2010

I remember hearing that stadium-filling opening riff to HIM's single "Wings of a Butterfly" a few years back and thinking that megastardom was imminent for the band. Though they maintain a legion of rabid fans, big time success in the mainstream never fully came to pass. Perhaps with the whole vampire craze still in full-swing, the stage is set for a breakthrough for the pallid Finnish quintent. However, their latest batch of morbidly sappy "love metal" tunes-- released just in time for Valentine's Day!-- sounds bland and inoffensive musically and seems to lack the strength and immediacy necessary to thrust the band into the limelight.

Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, as it's clumsily titled, is HIM's seventh full-length, and it offers little beyond the recycled somber, and often laughably melodramatic, themes and the polished, melodic and rather limp-dick take on metal they've been rehashing for more than a decade. It's unquestionably a smooth, professional rock record, but it's utterly predictable in almost every way. At the few moments when it does "surprise" (vocalist Ville Valo lapses into falsetto and tough-guy yelling more than expected), it's probably not for the better, anyway.

"Let's fall apart together now," Valo sings at the start of "In Venere Veritas", the album's kickoff tune and one it's hardest rocking songs. It has the quintessential doomy riff processed to a leathery finish and the ominous imagery ("zipping Cupid in a bodybag well-worn, next to the mausoleum he was born in"), that are hallmarks of the HIM oeuvre, and it might have made the best choice for a lead single, though the actual single "Heartkiller" carries very similar qualities.

Inevitably, given the band's sentimental bent, the album is rife with power ballads. "Scared to Death" and "Dying Song" (shocking song titles) add shiny keyboards to their silky Monster Ballad melodies, and "Disarm Me (With Your Loneliness)" even adds a Bon Jovi-ish guitar solo (cheese fittingly draws influence from cheese). The latter's lyrical turn "The promise of heaven pushed us right back to hell, turning three sevens into three sixes again," reflects just how out-of-his-way Valo goes to shoehorn references to death, hell and "the beast" into the songs, often in awkward ways.

Songs like "Love, the Hardest Way" find HIM at their most effective musically. With their "gothic" pretexts, it feels most natural when they employ creepy-sounding keys, their guitars evoke that sense of foreboding, and Valo sings in a smoky baritone. The song does have some facepalm-worthy lyrics about "the devil counting teardrops in the rain," but I guess you can't have it all. "Ode to Solitude" also has an appropriately haunting atmosphere, but the rest of the album is riddled with questionable decisions, like Valo's transformation to near screamer on parts of "Shatter Me With Hope" and "Like St. Valentine", which comes off forced, or pretty much all of "Acoustic Funeral", which by the way, isn't even acoustic.

If I lived completely under a rock, I'd say Screamworks, and HIM in general, would hit Twilight tweeners straight in the heart with its dark, dismal and dire themes, but the more mature crowd would see the excessive sentimentality as almost self-parodying. However, in my travels this past week, I actually saw a twenty-something guy (who otherwise looked like a regular dude and wasn't gothed-out or anything) wearing a Heartagram shirt, so perhaps the band's appeal is more widespread than I would otherwise estimate. So maybe it's best to sum it up this way: HIM's fans, whoever they might be, will almost surely lap this stuff up, as it's right in line with what they've been doing for years. If you're someone who's found a guilty pleasure track or two on previous albums (which is where I'm guessing a lot of people fall), you'll probably find the same here. And if you can't stand them or anything they do, this isn't going to change your mind. Not one bit.

1. In Venere Veritas (3:35)
2. Scared to Death (3:40)
3. Heartkiller (3:29)
4. Dying Song (3:32)
5. Disarm Me (With You Loneliness) (4:01)
6. Love, the Hardest Way (3:19)
7. Katherine Wheel (3:26)
8. In the Arms of Rain (3:46)
9. Ode to Solitude (3:58)
10. Shatter Me With Hope (3:51)
11. Acoustic Funeral (For Love in Limbo) (3:57)
12. Like St. Valentine (3:14)
13. The Foreboding Sense of Impending Happiness (3:14)

My friend let me borrow four HIM cds in 10th grade. I actually liked Venus Doom and Darklight. But recently I tried to get back into them. I guess I grew out of them cause now I just find their lyrics cringe-worthy. Whatever. Nice review though, Jeremy...as always.

I agree with all of this. This isn't a bad album, but I'm just finding it difficult getting back into them.

No one in this country should ever speak negatively of Him. We are fortunate that this band even bothers to spend any of their time here. Screamworks owns. Ville really impresses with his lyrics all over this. Squire and Avron really shined it up, but it works as a nice counterpoint to the lengths of Venus Doom.

No clue what a random picture of a cartoon character means. Do you have actual words?

Your fanboy rant was more than enough words. "Random picture of a cartoon character" sums it up near perfectly.

Nice review Jeremy. States very well "DO NOT WANT" without completely ripping on the band.

Yeah, HIM only seems to be doing decent when Bam Margera is active on TV, and at this time he is not, so I can see this CD bombing.

It seems like every Him posting, there's never anyone who actually knows anything about the band or has listened through their nearly thirteen years of making records. It would be nice to actually converse with someone who knows something about the band and their music and the dynamics of each record.

I suggest AP is not the best place to seek stimulating conversations about HIM. I like bands that don't rate with people on here too, but I have other places to discuss those bands.

How dare we question HIM's greatness.

I own a Heartagram shirt and have never even listened to a HIM song. Just happened to like the design and was shopping with a fangirl at the time. In fact, I'm wearing it right now. That's kind of funny, actually.

Hey, maybe I'm the guy you saw!

HIM have like 1 solid album (Razorblade Romance) and a few good songs (which were all featured on various CKY DVDs/Haggard) I will always look at this band as associated with Bam Margera. The whole "love metal" concept gets old after 6 albums, wouldnt you think?

Everyone should check out the HIM singles collection boxset. Amazing b-sides/remixes from my personal favourtite era of the band (RR & deep shadows). The last few records have been Ok, the the older stuff is incredible though.

I don't hate this band...In fact I used to really like them. I also own a Heartogram shirt (though, I haven't worn it in a year or so due to accidentally bleaching it), and I was into them a couple years back, but it all just sounds so depressing and dreary now to me. I can't get back into it. It's like a block.

So I gave it a shot, but in all honestly it's just another one of those "eh" album's.

Only album from this band that I can listen to is Love Metal. Everything else is just past my acceptable limit of cheesiness. And that's saying something.

Good review, Jeremy.

I like this album, have been a fan of HIM for years......... yes Razorblade Romance is 20 times better but so is every band who has a "great album." I am happy that Ville's vocal capabilities are starting to actually show up on the last 2 records than before, and Screamworks is probably his best album vocally. The ONLY thing i dont like.......... THE LYRICS ARENT THAT GREAT......... especially after an album of lyrics like Venus Doom, seriously Ville u could have done a little better.

HIM sucks. BAM rocks. Razorblade Romance was a solid CD, by no means great. CKy has more solid material then HIM.

Still enjoy listening to HIM from time to time, but I think it is a bit more for Nostalgias sake. Used to be very into that whole scene, but I don't know if I could get into some new stuff. Will give the album a spin and see what think, but I'm not expecting much!

I've never gotten this band. Maybe it's the crazed-fanaticism of their cult-like following (I can't help but picture chubby girls wearing gothic makeup and "Twilight" t-shirts) that has always just turned me off. Or maybe it's the over-dramatic style of the lead singer's voice. Either way, I don't see any reason to get into them now.

You have your own country? Is it like that Sealand place? That would be neat. For you. I'm not one for traveling, I've never been to your country. And unless you're a nice cute girl, I'm probably never going to visit.

i enjoyed this album, yes the music sounds a bit replayed... they are unique in their own way, and their abilities bleed through in very original lyrics.

Great review, HIM is one of those bands I'll always give the benefit of the doubt, since I liked them so much years ago. But lately, I haven't been as impressed by what they put out.. although there is some catchy shit on this CD

This album, although slightly medicore, succeeds on its own terms. The lead singer of Him (Villie something) said that they were working on 13 potential hits. None of these tracks will seem out of place in the charts, so they got what they wanted.
