View Full Version : Your favorite Taking Back Sunday album?

So New Again came out June 1st. At the time, many loved it, many hated it.
Eight full months after its release, how are we all feeling about it?
From the cover, to the title, to the sound, everyone on ap.net seemed to have an opinion.
Personally, I think it has lasting value, and has stood up against their other work. This is coming from someone who does love their first album, but not like the average ap.net user who generally places it as the scene's holy grail.
New Again received generally favorable reviews from critics, acquiring an aggregrated metascore of 77% on review accumulator Metacritic.[16] Scott Heisel of Alternative Press praised the record highly, stating that it "leaps forward as the best album of Taking Back Sunday's career to date".[2] For Matthew Niner of Pop Matters, "they have produced another solid album that cements their reputation as one of the most genuinely affecting and consistent bands in the current scene".[6] Alternative Press named it the number one album of the year 2009. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Again)
The general reception has been overall positive, but I'm curious to read your thoughts.
PS: Please don't post if you're going to complain about Taking Back Sunday, the number of times they are discussed on the site, or how overrated they are. I like them, and so do plenty of others. If you have a legit negative criticism of the album though, I'd love to hear it, just no trolling please.

I find New Again their weakest effort.
IMO their best (and probably only really good) effort is "Tell All Your Friends". However "Louder Now" comes close.

Anyone who doesn't vote TAYF is retarded.
I love Taking Back Sunday but they've been getting progressively worse.
TAYF > WYWTB > Louder Now > New Again
Edit: I loved, or at least liked, every TBS release, but New Again was my limit. Major disappointment.

Say what you will about New Again or any of their other albums, but they surely still have it. Winter Passing (http://www.takingbacksunday.com/store/product/winter-passing-digital-download), their just released New Again's b-side (REALLY just released, like half hour ago) is AMAZING.

One word to describe the New Again album: pathetic.
And wow, Alternative Press did that?! Wow, I remember that magazine just going down hill into 100% bullshit hype on the emo culture, but to that degree? Wow. Man, to name it album of the year.
And I enjoy what @carpathia states in his Post Script. Yes, I am complaining. But. Here are my thoughts. Tell All Your Friends will always be in my ears. Love it. The next album was depressing, but had about four good songs on it. Louder Now, I thought was much better than Where You Want To Be. Much better, as in song structure and vocals. Adam seemed to have more of a presence and attitude in Louder Now.
But, New Again, was just so mainstream, emo-predictable. This album only has one good song on it, but the lyrics aren't as powerful. That song is, Carpathia. But I just can't get into the album at all. There is no originality with it. Pop, punk, repetitive chorus, rhythms and structures. Most of the songs, I could hear a twenty-second clip and, then pretty move on. The rest of the is so repetitive its offensive.

I've just always felt like those middle albums are watered down versions of TAYF. They offer me nothing that the first album doesn't offer better. New Again is at least respectable because of how (relatively) different it is. It may be rather inconsistent, but at least it's not a weaker version of their debut.

where you want to be is my most favorite album of all time. it seriously changed my life. i don't understand how no one likes it as much as tayf. its pretty much the same thing just they improved on the emo/alt side of things. adam's singing is amazing in that album.
louder now is good but doesnt have as much staying power with me
also new again is amazing but no one gives it a chance. they've matured and their sound really shows it. i couldnt be happier with it (unless matt fazzi sang more lol)
ps. winter passing is soooo good. everyone should go buy it right now

Wherever You Want To Be is my favourite, since it's the most consistent in terms of songs I really like. TAYF has a few amazing tracks, and then a bunch of good to decent ones. Louder Now has one or two great tracks, then the rest are mediocre. Haven't ever listened to New Again.

Wow.
That would have been amazing.
As for my favourite TBS record... well that's like choosing between brunettes & blondes or chocolate & cookies and cream ice-cream.
As soon as I hear the first inkling of guitar on each of the first three my mood instantly lifts. I then take the drums in my stride and within moments I'm in musical heaven. Every time.
If I absolutely had to choose, I would probably have to go with Louder Now. That may (probably will) change tomorrow, though.

You must admit that tracks like 'Set Phasers to Stun', 'Error: Operator' and 'Sink Into Me' are quality, quality tracks.
But yes, a few amazing tracks don't make an amazing record. In my opinion however those records are amazing.

I like Set Phasers to Stun, I don't mind Sink Into me, and I hate Error: Operator. The last three albums had some tracks that showed us flashes of what the whole album could've been. Regardless, I still like TAYF; musically and because of memories attached to it.

I really enjoy all of the TBS albums, but I don't understand the love for Tell All Your Friends. Half of the album (Cute Without, You're so Last Summer, Timberwolves, the Blue Channel, and Romances) is amazing probably some of the best songs they have and still they best songs when played live. But the other half is weaker than their other albums. Cute Without the E will always be my favorite TBS song, but as far as whole albums go I would rank them New Again>Where You Want to Be>Tell All Your Friends>Louder Now. Anyone that hates New Again is entitled to their opinion, but Swing and Everything Must go are two of the best songs TBS has ever put out, especially live.

my favourite is and will always be where you want to be, i remember the exact date time and where i bought it, although i did already own a copy of tell it to your friends this one stands out for its better production and the fact i was geared up for buying it for so long before it came out
I love everything taking back sunday have ever released the pure emo of tityf (remember when contemporary emo bands were good). I like the more polished "emo" of wywtb and the straightforward commercial rock of louder now. all stand out for the brilliance of theur songs even if the sound did become more mainstream you cant deny their skill for penning a tune.
I know so many people who gave up on them after louder now which pisses me off because its so elitist (omg they are more popular now i cant like them anymore) its bullshit. Music should never be judged on popularity but unfortunately it is so often these days.
I personally really enjoy new again, its really just an extension of louder now but its got a bit more bite in the overall sound
Tell All Your Friends is the only one I can stand to listen to every now and then.

New Again is okay. I'm sick of TBS in general to be completely honest. I haven't been able to get through TAYF in the longest time.

One could argue the bickering still rages on.
Even though I agree about them maturing and keep releasing quality music, sometimes I wonder if "Liar (It Takes One To Know One)", "You Stole" and the just released "Winter Passing" aren't all somewhat related. Like little cryptical nods between Adam and Jesse.
The verses that lead me to wonder about this:
"Liar (liar)
If we're keeping score
Then we're all choir boys at best"
"So if I'm a liar and you're a thief
at least we both know where the other one sleeps
let's end this tonight"

I honestly can't listen to New Again all the way through. And I know Louder Now gets a lot of shit, but it has a ton of sentimental value to me. It was the second album I bought with my own money.
