July 21, 2006 -- TORONTO - Alex Rodriguez laughed when a trade rumor that circulated through Wall Street yesterday was relayed to him.
"It doesn't make any difference," Rodriguez said of the rumor that had the Yankees third baseman going to the Phillies as part of a blockbuster trade for Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Tom Gordon and David Bell, with the Yankees supposedly also sending Melky Cabrera and a player to be named. "I would veto it."
Though Rodriguez has become the Yankee Stadium boo birds' No. 1 target, the abuse hasn't come close to having him waive the blanket no-trade clause in his contract.
A Phillies official laughed at the rumor.
Rodriguez said his bruised left big toe was feeling better and he expected to play all four games against the Blue Jays on the artificial turf at Rogers Centre.
*
Hideki Matsui was examined by Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser yesterday in New York and had X-rays on his healing left wrist.
Rosenwasser said the fractured bone was healing "perfectly." The doctor also said there was some lingering pain, and when the pain subsides Matsui will be cleared to begin taking batting practice.
Matsui told a Japanese reporter there was "a very, very thin line on the X-ray."
Torre, asked if the Red Sox series Aug. 18-21 in Boston was a possible return date for the left fielder, said, "That's a little ambitious."
Matsui's will continue his rehab program in Tampa.
*
After two days off in Tampa, Robinson Cano received treatment on his troublesome hamstring yesterday. It's not known when the All-Star second baseman will be cleared to play in a minor-league rehab game. . . . Jorge Posada, whose bruised right index finger was too sore for him to play Wednesday, was in the lineup last night.
*
Watching Randy Johnson take grounders at second base and field throws at first base during batting practice was a strong indication to Torre that Johnson came through Wednesday's 129-pitch effort OK.
"It was great to watch a warrior at work," Torre said.
*
Sidney Ponson, a native of Aruba, wasn't at Rogers Centre last night because he needed to get his travel papers straightened out. The Cardinals, Ponson's original team this season, weren't scheduled to visit Canada.
Torre said Sunday's starter will join the club tonight.
*
Shea Hillenbrand, the Blue Jays' DH who was designated for assignment Wednesday after a blowup with manager John Gibbons, is likely to be traded to the Dodgers or Padres. The Angels were interested in Hillenbrand a month ago.
Hillenbrand isn't expected to clear waivers if he isn't dealt, which means the Yankees won't get a shot at him. They could view Hillenbrand as a better first-base option than Andy Phillips.

A-Rod is a loser. They rolled out some stats on the radio of his today.
In his last 40-45 games:
.249 BA, 7 HR, 24 RBI's (Leads MLB 3rd baseman with 17 errors)

we get it. he's slumping. he isn't the first sure-fire HOF'er and he won't be the last. give it a fucking rest.

I don't think the term "overrated" has ever been more appropriate.

are you on glue?
dude will have 2000 hits, 450 HRs and 230+ SBs before his 31st birthday. look up how many players have done that.
lets not forget how good he was at SS.
you're out to fucking lunch man, a slump does not mean he's overrated.

not because arod sucks, but because nobody should make that much money.

That's the better part of the point there...he's playing a different position, and yet was still MVP last season. True, he's struggling, but not every year can be a new career year.
overpaid is the term.
not because arod sucks, but because nobody should make that much money. This I also agree with...250 million was just nuts (in the initial contract)

you can make a case for overpaid. just remeber that the yankees are only paying him 16 million a year, which is still a lot, but if you look at where that puts him in the yankees payroll it seems about right.
(obviously you could argue that other yankees are overpaid as well, but you get my point)

i'm not knocking arod at all. i'm one of the few who have never understood all the arod hate.
i'm more just saying that the only reason he takes so much shit is because of the size of his contract.

jesus christ. people calling for a trade of arod out of new york right now need to be punched in the fucking face. God this is so aggravating and i hate the yankees. Overrated? That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard. If you call him overrated then your opinion on baseball related issues is absolutely moot. He leads the AL in Game Winning RBIs, is 2nd in go-ahead RBIs and will go down as one of the 2 greatest players of our generation. Jesus fucking christ, stop with this criticizing. Fine, trade him to detroit for Carlos Guillen. great, I'll take him. You want guillen who has the same amount of errors, a weaker arm, less range, less power, less rbis?
He's in his what? 2nd year at a position he's never played in his life except maybe in little league? he's still on pace for close to 40 HRs and 125+ RBIs, so get off his fucking nuts.
No one is worth $25 million. But he never once asked the Texas Rangers for that amount of money, Tom Hicks GAVE him that contract. Are you going to turn down that amount of money to play a fucking game? Of course not, and if you say you would, you're a fucking liar.
Alot of yankees fans calling for this dude's head don't fucking deserve to even watch baseball, let alone, have the opportunity to root for the most successful franchise in sports. Those people are a disgrace to the city, the team, and to fans in general. Please, shut the fuck up.

a week after the all-star break and he has 21 HRs and 71 RBis... that's playing like shit??
he has delgado beat in almost every category, so is delgado even more of a loser?
EDIT: I make this comparison because there's only a 2.5 million per difference between what a-rod is paid by the yankees and what delgado is paid by the mets

Delgado is making 13.5 this year and A-Rod is making 21.7.
And Delgado has been dead for about two months now, and no one is particularly enthused about it. It's just that no one is acting like it's the end of the world because he's playing extremely crappy baseball.

i love you?
im with you on that one.
everyone is giving arod a tough time, and i bet all that negative 'energy', so to speak, is making it even worse on him. some say its the NY pressure, some say its injuries. i personally think that he's just trying too damn hard. hes been trying too hard to live up to the NY pressure of producing like he did in texas. i dont even care that he's made an error per game in the last 5 games or 18 since the beginning of the season. he's never played the 3B position before, and came to the yankees regardless. for not playing the position and STILL coming away with the MVP last season, i say he's doing a damn fine job. fielding balls at 3B is an entirely different arm angle, and you see the ball off the bat at a different angle. and he's STILL going out early for fielding practice and taking extra practice trying to get used to it. i'll take arod over boone, glaus, mora and lowell. yes, even the *sparkling* defense of mike lowell.
CERTAINLY an upgrade over aaron boone in every way, shape and form.

Actually yeah, and what I read stated that A-Rod is 21.7 million against the Yankee payroll.
And I didn't mean that you were acting like it's the end of the world, but there about a million Yankee fans that are acting like it is.
