View Full Version : What should the SoCo greatest hits include?

Since there are already two confirmed tracks "Wiat" and "Letters to Noelle"

what you think the track listing will look like given the fact there are only two full lengths and a few EPs?

What ya think?

What do you call Ready...Break?

Anyway. I think it be the same setlist they were doing in 2003. If you ever seen SoCo live at Ventura...I think it should be those songs + Letters to Noelle

I don't know that he hates it, but I'm pretty sure playing a 9 minute song live takes a lot out of you... and it's a SoCo song that everyone requests at every Jack's show. Personally, it's never been one of my favorites.

I don't think Andrew hates it, per se, he just won't play it live because if he plays it live just one time, everywhere after, people will want him to play Konstantine because he played it "that one time". Plus, it was written a long time ago, and he's married now, so it's kind of pointless to perform.

I do think that Konstantine should be released. It's an excellent song, along with

I'm not sure if the word "greatest hits" has ever actually been used by anyone in the band. If this was like, an updated retrospective, that would make more sense, maybe. It does seem odd though.

Oh, and like it or not, Space is gonna be on there. It wouldn't make sense for their only real minor hit to not be.

EDIT: Yeah, my first two sentences kinda don't make sense/aren't true. Apparently Andrew did say it's a greatest its, and the only songs they re-recorded where "Noelle" and "Wait."

I'm curious to find out if this is contractual obligation or choice. I know that most record contracts allow a record in the series to be a compilation disc, so maybe SoCo was under contract for 3 records and are making this their third to complete obligations. If that's not the case, I hope he will eventually provide a reason as to this choice.

My only request is that "Down" and "Me and the Moon" be on there as those are 2 of my favorites (though I doubt either will make the cut).

Its life is eternal. Because it is one of the best songs ever written by anyone. The amount of times I drove home from nights out with friends just listening to this damn song. It's legendary.

Plus, not playing it increases demand. Just ask Brand New how well refusing to play "Seventy Times Seven" worked out for them.

Because whenever someone gets into the band/his work they'll eventually discover "Konstantine" and see the track length and maybe get some back story and gizz their pants over it. I mean, don't you remember when you first heard it/your feelings about it?

If you're in this thread because there is one song by this band that you think is good then I'm honestly not inclined to bother. I've been a fan of them for over 7 years and to be honest, no, I'm not educated in music theory so I can't spout off technical terms, but I think that since I'm a fan of the band (and the majority of their music) rather than the possibility of just a few songs I have a damn valid opinion.

Feel free to send me a mesaage or ask an actual question but if not I'd really like to hear what other songs some other people would like to see on this release.

I've known their music for about 6 years. Why do I have to like them for my opinion to matter?

Also, you don't need to be a music student to have an educated opinion about why a song is good. It's as simple as understanding your personal set of standards for music, and explaining how that individual song fits into it.

First of all, apologies because I really could not understand from the way you had written your previous statement what exactly you were looking for.

Alright then, here is my response.

My standards for a song typically include memorable lyrics backed by fitting music that actually elicits some kind of response from me. I don’t know how better to explain it beyond that. So, those are the standards I’m going to be judging my songs of choice on.

So, first, a response on Konstantine. I will start off by saying that no, I do not feel as though this is Something Corporate’s best song. There are actually only a few verses that I really like. That would be these two:

And I had dreams that I would learn to play guitar
Maybe cross the country
Become a rockstar
And there was hope in me
That I could take you there
But damnit you're so young
But I don't think I care

I always catch the clock it's 11:11
And now you want to talk
It's not hard to dream
You'll always be my Konstantine

You clearly disagree, but in my opinion aside from this the song is actually pretty forgettable for me. I love that first verse but even for that second one, I have a feeling that I remember it is the cancer-related charities that have used it as their moniker since Andrew’s return to the music scene. The overall song feels really repetitive and although the piano playing for this song is absolutely stunning I feel like there are times when the song really needs some more oomph in the form of instruments. To my ear it just does not match up.

I also hate the argument that because it’s so long it one of their best songs. Although they’re not Something Corporate songs Andrew regularly plays MFEO and Caves at shows and both of these songs are really long but don’t get nearly as much recognition.

cavanaughpark09
02/16/10, 11:13 AM
Okay, so on to songs that I think are better:

1.) Hurricane

I fully admit my bias because Leaving Through The Window is to this day my favorite album. Now that we’re past that.

I love the way that this song starts, with just the guitar and Andrew’s voice, and then picks up with the whole band, and essentially keeps building until the chorus. Some part of me likes the allusion between a relationship and a building storm (forgive the English minor and the weather class I took in college). I have to say that the bridge in this song is one of my favorite pieces of music ever. The piano still gives me goosebumps and these lyrics are the ones that are constantly stuck in my head at work even 7+ years later.

This is the Something Corporate song that I remember hearing for the first time while I honestly don’t remember paying Konstantine much attention until people started going on and on about it. I heard it in the car on the way home from the first time I’d seen SoCo live and it was the song I replayed over and over when I got home.

2.) Ruthless

Now this is not necessarily my favorite song on North but I think it is one of the best. Remember that problem I had with Konstantine where I felt the music and the singing didn’t match up. For one, this song is the complete opposite. The instruments really pick up where they need to but are quiet during the verses that call for it.

Any lyrics like these:
This is the only lonely picture
Waiting on my floor littering my shore
This is the last true burning letter
Given to a girl
Written by a boy
Living in a world
Created to destroy
I honestly don’t think that Konstantine even compares. This song just does it better. I think on any level this is one of their strongest.

And lastly
3.) Walking By

This really starts with the same haunting beginning as Konstantine and I feel like it kind of has the same vibe to it throughout. However, I think that the fact that this song is shorter really makes it stronger. The verses in this song actually seem to have a common theme (and tell a story) while those in Konstantine seem somewhat disjointed to me.

It is my opinion that lyrics like these:
She was raised in a New England village.
Then she moved to LA with her firefly stare,
and you loved sunset strip when it sparkled,
you grew up and you sparkled but why don't you care?
Really create a picture in the listeners mind and for me, at least, do more to make the song memorable and stronger than a lot of their other songs.

So here are three songs I think are better than Konstantine according to my standards, as asked for. I am completely aware that I have an unpopular opinion in relation to fans of this band but my real disagreement with you was not that this was a good or bad song… but that you could say that one song by a band was all that mattered. Sure, Something Corporate is going to be remembered for Konstantine by a lot of people but I really don’t think they could possibly have so many fans without a much larger number of really good songs.

I know bands do this crap to get to the end of their record deals and stuff, but there should be a minimum album limit to have a greatest hits made. soco:
soft girlfriend rock with tons of piano
has andrew mcmahon on vocals
a bunch of mediocre musicians backing him who don't really contribute to the songs

What'd I miss?

Well I really can't deny the 'has Andrew McMahon on vocals bit... clearly.

SoCo:
-pop punk band of the era they existed in. maybe a little more emphasis on old california style music.
-more instrumental. Drums, guitar and bass all equally important.
-a lead singer who sometimes contributes piano.

Jacks:
-more mellow music, still got some of the pop punk vibe but can easily be put i the category of the Fray, OAR, etc.
-very piano driven.
-relies more heavily on the older music soco only touched on.

Trying to raise their profile before going in and recording a new album? a boy can dream....

Haha, I hear you. I would love another too. I don't see it happening, but I'll dream with you.

They should just throw in a bunch of Jack's Mannequin songs since they're THE EXACT SAME THING AS SOMETHING CORPORATE SHUT THE FUCK UP IF YOU SAY OTHERWISE YOU'RE DEAF.

THis just comes off as incredibly angry. Are you angry that you believe they sound similar?

Reasoning in this article I guess. It seems like they're doing old songs (one by Josh and one by Andrew) that haven't really been widely released.

Just a few:

Me and the Moon
Watch The Sky
I Want To Save You
Hurricane
I Woke up in a Car

It's so hard to choose because they don't have too too many songs.

Minus.Orange.

Konstantine of course.
I would also like to see Ruthless.

and I Kissed a Drunk Girl.

I've been wondering something. Seeing as Andrew "will never ever play Konstantine again", what are the chances he'll put it on the greatest hits record? Even more, rerecord it?
