vastly unappreciated. The junction system was easily the best thing the series has done.

quiet you.
This game was amazing. The plot was a little jumbled, but upon getting used to the junction/battle system, it was tons of fun and definitely a worthy addition to the FF series.

I couldn't figure out the junction. Let's just go back to Materia.

I got bored with it, and didn't ever finish it. The plot just got very "what the fuck?" and I stopped caring what was going on.

I usually hate it when people do this, but seriously....
SEARCH FUNCTION.
There have been like 3 threads about FF8 in the past couple months. FF8 is the worst FF and the junction system was weak as fuck. The story wasn't strong either. Good game, but still weak by FF standards.

Junction > Materia.
FF8>FF7
But that's just my opinion. If you don't like that, get over it.

I never understand why Scott doesn't like this at all.
Personally, my favorite story of the series besides possibly VI. For me, the actual fighting was secondary to the characters and story, and this had my favorite of both. Junctions were sweet, it was generally easier than the other ones but that's fine, got me my story experience I wanted so badly. I found it hard to get into, I played it for an hour, put it down for a few months, went back and played it and LOVED it. But yeah, search function is very necessary. One day someone should make a thread about Nintendo Wii making a game that is a cross between FF8 and Donnie Darko, written by Darron Aronofsky and we would probably have the biggest orgasm thread ever because it combines everyones favorite topics, or at least most repeated topics.

I found the junctioning simple, and dumb. I don't remember exactly how it worked, because I haven't played since 8th grade or so (and I'm 20 now), but I remember if you had patience to do repetitive shit or "draw" or whatever, you could build up tons of shit and have no difficulty with anything. I did enjoy that card game, though.

Me? Dude, over 80% of the Final Fantasy community would call this game the black sheep on the FF series. It's WIDELY regarded as the worst of the modern FF series. For some reason, a lot of people on this site like it, but outside of here it's not even close...especially since Final Fantasy 7 has been named the greatest video game of all time by several publications.

I don't know about that. Half of my friends prefer 7, and half prefer 8. that can't be an irregularity. Especially considering this forum also.

Coincidentally having never played any final fantasy game before I decided to borrow this off a friend today who (along with another friend of mine) said it was their favourite of the series

To my knowledge FF9 was considered the black sheep, and that's by 95% of the community. It was globally shunned. FF8 had the positioning problem of following up FF7, which changed the FF series dramatically. FF8 fit better with the old SNES ones, 7 fit better with the later series. Every person I know loves FF8, and 7, and everyone on down, its 9 and beyond that are pariahs. Also, I know FF7 has pulled some top ten finishes, but has it really hit top game all time for publications? I know IGN didn't even have it in the top 80, Gamespot excluded it from the top 10, and EGM had it at 20 or so. Not saying anything is wrong with that, it just seems as if you are the exception to the rule from everyone I've heard. Everyone I know loves both, everyone obviously prefers one, you're just the first I've ever seen that seems to actually dislike the game and I have always found that odd. Not that there's anything wrong with that, everyone is in fact entitled to their opinion, I just don't buy into 8 being considered the black sheep, especially with IX and X-2 existing, with the latter being shit on wheels and the former being a HUGE step back for the series and precursor to the cliff they jumped off of with XI.
Isnt this the 3rd ff8 thread this year?
8 blows, but some people actually like it.

exactly. 9 was considered the black sheep. 8 was split. you had the people who loved it, and the ones who hated it.

FF8 is a fine game, but the fact that its got the name Final Fantasy will always mean it will attract trash talk. I dont think it should have been a Final Fantasy game.
Personally. I HATED the junction system. I didnt see the point in spending 5 hours drawing magic and GF's when I could have been playing and advancing the story.

I never touched FF9 because my PSX was at my dad's and I stopped visiting him then, and I didn't get a PS2 until right before FFX came out, so I never bothered.
Is it worth getting, or just wait for XII?

I just thought the character development in 8 is way better than 7. You get a sense that everyone has each other's back. Sepiroth is a complete badass, but I felt 7 dragged on too much. There were a few unnecassary parts to the storyline that I hated so much. Like the whole Cloud in a coma thing.
I dont know. I personally dont care that I'm repeating threads, but Ill watch out for it next time.

not to bust balls, but how does 8 have character development when everyone has the same backstory except rinoa. i mean, you sorta have to guess that shes julia's child, much like you need to guess that squall is laguna's son.
not to say that 7 has great character development tho...best has to be 6 or 9
Incorrect, but ok. It's 7. Easy.
actually, 6 is considered the best. 7 is just the most popular.
VII has an unbeaten system... materia really is the best. Junctioning was dire! I've only played half on XI and it was pretty fun. Not counting XI

In recent FF's.. this is how they rank, in order.

FFX SUCKED. I don't want a fucking map and voice actors when I'm playing an FF game. The map just made it feel too linear and I didn't really like the voice acting, I'd rather there be no voice acting and be able to make up the voices in my head when it comes to an FF game.

That waterpolo game was so simple once you lost the first game and levelled up at all. I wish the other teams moved along like you did.. I would waste time and still dominate every game.
I also missed the world map... I know that seems dumb, but this game seemed too much like "ok, follow this path." There wasn't enough open area.

07/25/06, 02:49 PM
Oh yea.. the voice acting was brutal... it dragged on faaaaar too long. I can hit a button and read faster than one person says their line, so I was stuck watching movies forever.

I just enjoy what I have to play and leave it at that.

I have everything resembing FF from 6 backwards, including series spin-offs and what not, on my laptop, but I barely got through any of it. I'm almost done with 1, and I started 3 for some reason, but forgot what I was doing. Then I got bored.
I should jump to six I guess.
