Always loved the Jeff Buckley version, it's so haunting.
Honestly though I enjoy most versions, doesn't really matter who does it.
JT should of been included. He did a good version of it on the Hope for Haiti telethon. I haven't heard all of these versions yet but I am interested to do so.

Jeff Buckley then Rufus in a close 2nd.
Leonard Cohen's version is... I'm sorry but it's kinda terrible. I know it's the original and everything, but I don't feel it at ALL. Jeff Buckley's version is the staple now personally, most people cover his version and not Cohen's.

Well said. I can't listen to Cohen's version without feeling...ummm.. uncomfortable?
Jeff's is the best but Rufus' is amazing as well.

JT and Matt Morris' version is pretty amazing. Very close second after Buckley's.

Dear and the Headlights
Jeff Buckley's was the first version I heard and it was so beautiful. I guess it stuck because all the other ones don't sound right
I figured Cohen or Wainwright would be winning.

Like who?
Like who?
Every version i've heard seems to in some way leech more of his version than anyone elses. I think it would've been more approrpiate for me to say that guitarists cover his version. Pianists normally cover Cole's version. How many people do you know have covered Cohen's version in the way Cohen did it? Because I haven't found any.
Secondly, I consider Wainrights version to be more Buckley than Cole, but i'm in the minority in saying that.
And excuse me but how the fuck is Buckley's version a "steaming pile of shit"?

I haven't heard many guitarist covers of it. I wasn't saying most did the song Cohen's, I was just saying a few I know aren't done in Buckey's way (John Cale's, Rufus Wainwright's).
As for Jeff Buckley's version being a steaming pile of shit, it just does nothing for me.

So, at twenty you're still prone to comments where you describe something based on your own opinions overshadowing actual ability while we're on a music website?
Sorry, I just find that appalling.

Define ability, you're 20 and you still think music is objective?

of course not, opinion matters as it does with everything in pop culture. That's the entire point of pop-culture.
Musical ability is easy to define, creative ability not so much. Someone can have incredible creative ability while lacking instrumental ability, for instance I loved blink 182 when I started listening to music (yes, i'm going somehwere with this) so in my opinion they were awesome and I will always think they are, but they're not very good skill wise in comparison to say DragonForce (Whom I despise musically) that isn't to say Dragon Force is a pile of shit, but their music doesn't do it for me.
Clear?

While I don't go as far as saying it's terrible, it certainly doesn't compare to Buckley's version. And I agree that Buckley's is the staple that is covered.
JT and Matt Morris' version is pretty amazing. Very close second after Buckley's.
100% this. I don't care whether you like JT or hate him, his performance with Matt Morris sent shivers up my spine. The harmonies were gorgeous, the emotion was sincere, and the delivery was stunning.

It sort of reminds me of the song Hurt by Nine Inch Nails.. Trent Reznor's version was fine, but Johnny Cash took it and kind of made it his own song. Nobody really gives a shit about the NIN verison (sorry if there's people here that do ><) and the Johnny Cash version is the one that most people remember. For me, it's the same thing with Hallelujah. A good song that was taken by another artist, re-imagined and made into something even more incredible.

So there's no bands with "musical ability" you would define as shit? My point is me referring to that version as bad is opinion.

Holy fuck. Reading fail, my bad.
I do like the song, and I probably just said it harshly, but from my experience, people don't really hear the NIN version first.. it's usually the Johnny Cash version, and for me, the remake is much better than the original. Thats just me though. I just know that for me, and other people I know, the remake is always heard first, and the original just sort of goes unheard

Yeah it must have to do with the people who you hang out with. Me and my friends were always big NIN fans, so the Johnny Cash version was just a plus. But most of the people who I talk to knew the original first.

Jeff Buckley's is my personal favourite.
Burke's is a crime against music. That woman irritates the hell out of me.

but anywho, I like Buckley's best and after hearing the JT version, its pretty good too..
I heard KD Lange sing during the opening ceremonies of the Olypmics and her version was pretty bomb too...There are so many good versions of the song
