So, there seems to generally be something good on at all times on either NPR, PBS, National Geographic, Discovery, History, etc., and so on. I figured this would be a good place to discuss the shows and topics that come up on these stations, and keep people who can't watch up to date.
Let's keep this to programs with an intellectual/educational/political context to them, let's keep the 'entertainment' in the Entertainment Forum.
So, on National Geographic Channel tonight (for anyone who gets it) at 10:00, there is a show called Taboo on that's going to be about strange practices regarding death/corpses. Looked pretty interesting, anyone planning on watching it?

history channel isn't the least bit intellectual. ice road truckers, pawn stars, and bible apocalypse bullshit.
Here's something that aired on BBC. I actually came across it on this website. One of the most interesting things I've seen on TV.

Aaah, I watch a lot of History Channel pre-8 AM. You can get some interesting shows on then.

I pretty much avoid TV in general.
it's not super intellectual, but on PBS on saturDAY's they have "America's Test Kitchen" where they tell you the best ways to cook things, and why, as well as test kitchen wear and various store-bought foods. It's pretty cool.
I also dig CHARLIE ROSE. He's the man

i like ATK and used to love Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie when it was still on PBS. Adventures with Ruth (Reichl) is pretty good if you're into foodie shows.
On a non-food related note, there's a great show on PBS that's currently airing called Faces of America, check it out, they dig deep into the genealogy of a handful of famous people (including Stephen Colbert!) and find out all about their families' past. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/facesofamerica/
I'm also a huge fan of NPR and the following shows: This American Life, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!, Car Talk, and occasionally A Prairie Home Companion.

(why is this in the politics forum btw? are the Entertainment forum kids too cool for PBS and NPR?)
edit: oops, i didn't catch that you wanted this only about intellectual stuff. oh well.

TV? You mean the machine I use to help me play NHL 10? That's what that moving people box is called?

Ha ha ha, yeah, I just wanted discussions more on 'The Real George Washington' and less on 'Ice Road Truckers'.

Yeah, I can't get into the lame crap they pass off as educational on TLC and The History Channel. I dumped cable months ago and haven't looked back.

It's a shame, because I used to watch History and TLC a lot. You kind of had to watch TLC at night/early morning for the good shows, but now you have to do that with History and TLC is unwatchable.
Someone mentioned up there, and they were right, History International is pretty sweet, so is the NatGeo channel and the Science Channel. Military and I.D. channel aren't bad, either.

As well, to anyone with an iPhone, NPR has a free app where you can listen to almost any of their programs any time. It's pretty sweet, especially if you can't get around a radio during the day.

i honestly don't watch much tv so paying for tons of channels i don't watch isn't worth it for me. if the evil cable companies would ever get on a pay-per-channel system, I'd pick up the Science Channel and National Geographic in a heartbeat, but for now, my Roku box for streaming Netflix onto my tv is a dream come true for when i do want to veg out on the couch. The documentary selection on Netflix is outstanding, especially the instant watch ones.

Oh yeah, my parents just picked up a Roku and my stepdad loves it. I'm jealous, Roku and Netflix is an awesome combination. I'd love a whack at that Documentary Section.

Don't think I'll ever pay for cable unless some external force (wife, kids, a disease that leaves me bedridden) causes me to

Don't know if anyone gets the Military Channel, but there's a show on right now (called World War I) about some of the horrors between the German/Russian/Serbian/Austrian forces. If anyone cares, it looks pretty interesting, little known facts about WWI, etc.
