Funky jazz group recreates the atmosphere of New Orleans through a collection of colourful jams in 2010's Ya Ka May. By combining funk and jazz with a fair share of hip hop influence for good measure, Galactic has created one of the most pleasantly boisterous albums I've heard in a while. If you don't believe me, just take a look at the cover art:

.
Yeah, that's the biggest I could find. Believe me, there are gnomes having sex somewhere in that picture. Now you're intrigued. Listen here (http://www.myspace.com/galactic).
Discuss and such.

haha I'm afraid the extent of the gnome sex is depicted on the cover art. You'll have to do without the audio.

This is some where on my harddrive, I just haven't gotten a chance to listen to it.

Thanks, Brian. You're underrated. Get listening, though.

Interesting. Aren't all gnomes males?
However, I think the depiction translates well to music. It's groovy stuff, yet not really my thing. What I'm saying is, while gnome sex is an interesting concept, I don't derive much pleasure from listening to it.

I like I Got It What You Need, but it seems like that's from a previous album.

haha Well said. It's not really my style either, but damn. It's so good.

Either I am just liking this more and more as it's going along, or I actually enjoy their previous effort more. Once song is done I'll go back to the beginning again just to make sure.

I haven't heard their earlier stuff. Not enough horny gnomes, I suppose.

I'm sorry you like midget sex.
The album is called From the Corner to the Block, I think. I like the songs from this one slightly more at the moment.

In that case, I'll be sure to check that one out as well. The latest is so much fun.

These guys have it tough, coming from the home of The Meters, all those early days comparisons haha. That said, I remember checking these guys out back in the day, the album Ruckus I think it was. I could never decide what I thought of them with any true conviction. But upon this thread prompting me to revisit them I'm starting to get into them again, but having the same issues. I love their funkier ways, those thick rhythms & heavy grooves, but when they get a little too "rock" they start to lose me (ie "I Got What You Need").

haha I thought I might see you here. Like I said, I haven't heard their earlier material. However, after listening to 'I Got What You Need', I can say Ya Ma Kay rarely ventures so far into rock territory. I'm with you in being partial to the funky grooves, and this album is a lovely, cluttered mess of that kind of stuff.

Yea the two new songs on their myspace are sounding great. I'm definitely going to find new album, it sounds very promising. I hadn't kept up with these guys to know of another album, so this thread came just in time.

Haha, I guess I'm the only one who enjoys the more "rock" sound from them then.

It's 'cause you like me lots. So yay.
New songs are growing on me. But if I were to consider getting a full length, I'd still probably go with their previous album.

Those two new songs have really grown on me today & I keep venturing back to their myspace to hear them. I need to find the new album, I hope I can enjoy the whole thing.

Those are definitely two songs that have stood out for me on Ya Ka May, so I really think you'll find a lot to like about this offering. The only issue I have with it is when it leans a little too far toward the hip hop side of things, but even that's been growing on me.
But yeah, 'Heart of Steel' is really fun.
Ruckus and From the Corner to the Block are both awesome. I prefer From the Corner... but I'm stoked to hear the new jams.

I threw on some of their previous albums I had for the first time in a while, & I'm really getting back into these guys in a big way again. Can't seem to track down the new album as yet, but when I'm keen to hear something I don't give up.

Exhausting band to listen to, feels as though they're perpetually pummeling me into submission. Decent in small doses.

Still listen to Ya Ka May all the time. Definitely will have to delve further into this band's earlier material.
