So, for my English class I have to write a scholarly research paper (of whatever topic I so choose).
The topic I chose was," Is "emo" music a major cause in teen suicide cases?"
Now, what I need your help with is:
My professor has asked that I make a brief list of songs that would be considered "Emo" by the masses (Whether they are falsely accused or not) so that she may have a better understanding as to what this new crazy fad is.
So please, feel free to help me out by suggesting some songs I could possible use.
Thanks!

How are you going to defend a genre you refuse to classify music as being a part of? Come to think of it, if you believe music can't be classified as emo, why are you asking us to classify music as emo for you?
Not sure I understand what you're getting at. But to answer the question, here are a few bands often referred to as emo:
Sunny Day Real Estate
Bright Eyes
Taking Back Sunday
Dashboard Confessional
The Smiths
Say Anything
My Chemical Romance
Fob could be considered emo to the masses. It's so broad.

Depends on who you talk to. Which is why the very notion of a label or brand of music, or of any art form, really, being the cause of suicide is absolutely ridiculous.

I would say that it might put someone who is already over the edge into that sort of state of mind. But is it the cause? I don't think so.
Music can inspire people. Not sure anyone can argue with that. People make music to inspire people to do good, so it would be false to say the opposite couldn't happen. But I severely doubt that, in the unlikely instance an artist would write a song with the sincere desire to provoke people to kill themselves, any stable-minded person would actually do it because of said song.

Precisely. This is however, going to be a very rough paper in the means of finding scholarly work to cite or solid "proof" that is not opinionated. (Even though music, being as subjective as it is, is completely and utterly opinionated.)

I'll stop this before it starts. Apologies, if I've offended anyone, and I'm definitely not trying to act high and mighty. I didn't say the band was emo, either. But there are people who will. I just wanted to demonstrate how difficult it is to say, one way or the other, and why that lends to how ridiculous it is to blame a genre for something. We can't agree nor scientifically define what a genre consists of, so to blame one for something as serious as suicide just seems stupid.

An easier idea to research, yes. However, I have always found it much easier to write a lengthy paper on a subject I give a rats ass about, and stupid ass "tough-guy" radio rap fight songs don't quite suit me.

yeah it isn't the best topic for a paper that isn't really about music. it's easy to define them but not so in a paper that's about music AND something else. especially when the suicide part is probably the big focal point, i doubt the teacher is going to want a long summary of the last 25 years of indie rock just to get to the point of it.

the problem here is that mall emo has only been around for maybe a decade, and a lot of the sources surrounding it will be media LOOK AT THE KIDS? THE KIDS? stories instead of worthwhile academic sources. i don't know how your teacher is so maybe you can get away with that but i know i couldn't.

Goo Goo Dolls - Black Balloo -- Listen to the lyrics, they are emo/depressing as shit
Hawthorne Heights - Saying Sorry
Senses Fail - Buried a Lie and The Irony of Dying on Your Birthday
A Thorn for Every Heart - Pretty When You Cry
Underoath - A Boy Brushed Red

Emo goes deeper than lyrics, though. If emo relied entirely on lyrics, then there'd be no argument that The Cure was an emo band. But when you really think about it, how many songs don't have emotional lyrics? If that was the only factor, basically, we'd be left with two genres: emo, and techno.

i like that statement the best, but i guess you could say i listed bands/songs of moreso "scene emo" bands that were labeled as such.
emo is not a synonym for shitty... (FOB reference) but for what this kid is looking for in his paper, i think some of the stuff i listed would be useful

Blink 182: I Miss You
Hawthrone Heights: Ohio is for Lovers
Jimmy Eat World: Pain
Good Charlotte: Hold On
The Used: Box of Sharp Objects

you're going to have nothing to write your paper on. The vast majority of the songs that are being recommended to you aren't even emo. Some real emo bands are:
Fugazi
Sunny Day Real Estate
Jawbreaker
Weezer
The Get Up Kids
Braid
Rites of Spring
Maybe you should write your paper on how much shitty music people shove under the umbrella of emo when it actually has nothing to do with the genre of music. Emo has nothing to do "with the style of hair" or the "feel of the lyrics." It's just a strand of punk rock.

emo is only short for "emotional" which IMO is almost everything you hear in music. There are plenty of songs even from the 20's and 30's that where about "girls" and "breakups" and not wanting to live, so you gunna call that "emo" too?? I hate the word and terms it's always associated with, and if you think "emo" should even be considered as a genre as it's described, you should do a little more research than what you heard in 3rd period.

I think that acts of suicide that were committed by young people and associated for emo music is not the fault of the genre itself. Most of the bands that were blamed did not encourage their fans to commit suicide, rather they paraphrase feelings that were initially there in the first place. These kids might have been depressed prior to finding out about emo, and they identified the genre because it provided an explanation for what they're feeling. Plus its cool + the band has hot guys and it's not cool enough that the whole school is into it, but just a few people are. A smart (but depressed) fan would look upon them and think that their idols were in the same bleak position at one point in their lives, but they have made it through, or are at least on the right track. That's what I thought when I was into emo in middle school, but I guess some people are not as lucky.

Its not a matter of fitting in, but more of accepting who they are and establishing a healthy self concept and a healthy self esteem and early interventions towards psychological (particularly mood or anxiety) disorders.
I think classifying every little attention whore teenager as having a "disorder" is a far stretch however. I don't think the word "disorder" should really even exist.

I missed the memo where "emo" was a genre.
Music that makes me want to kill myself can easily be accessed if I just turn the radio on.
Should write your paper on;
Justin Beiber
Jonas Brothers
Miley Cirus
Any other 12 year old singing about love.

Wtf at topic of your essay.
But people that have no idea what they're tlaking about associate "emo" with bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and Taking Back Sunday.

Cause they're not. Goth? New-Wave? Alternative? Not emo
Not. Goth. Please, anything but goth. Have you heard Friday I'm in Love? Just Like Heaven? Lovecats? Yes, maybe New wave and Alternative, and yes, some of their albums were simply depressing as hell, but their music is spread across too many moods and ideas to *just* be goth...
As stated earlier, big hair and make-up DOES NOT make a band belong in a certain genre, like "emo". Anyway, genres are so completely blurred together lately, nothing is "purely" rock or punk or anything, so you really cant state that any band is one specific genre... Unless it's something between techno and country haha

Alkaline Trio? If that wasn't mentioned.
But I mean, I even remember looking at Ocean Avenue on itunes in like 6th grade and it being labled as Emo on the itunes store.

Well they were one of the goth bands around that time. Not your age group goth douche bags with huge pants and chains. There was nothing douchey about it. They were not just goth.

Emo goes deeper than lyrics, though. If emo relied entirely on lyrics, then there'd be no argument that The Cure was an emo band. But when you really think about it, how many songs don't have emotional lyrics? If that was the only factor, basically, we'd be left with two genres: emo, and techno.
so true emo music is more based of the feeling it gives off not neccessarily the lyrics although they do play a key part in making the genre, however i think that the emo genre is far to broard it seems to extend its grasp into punk, hardcore and srceamo and even your basic rock in some cases, emo itself is not a genre but a mixture of other genres and therefore i think that the emo music scene is to hard to pin down and describe

Exactly why there won't be any sources everyone has a different view on what emo is, I don't even think of it as a genre but more a fashion sense now.

agreed it varies too much to be a genre, at least thats what i think, well more so its moved from being a genre of music to a fashion sence and has taken a lot of different genres into it, suck as punk, screamo, hard-core, and other such genres
