View Full Version : I'm looking for a good guitar set-up for Drop-C metalcore.
Like the title says, I'm looking for a good guitar set up for metalcore. I'm not really that limited on price, but I would prefer to pay less. Show me something good, por favor.
Thanks!

For one thing, since you'll be tuning down pretty low, look for a guitar that has a 25.5" scale length. Most Gibson-style guitars run a 24.75" scale length, and as you tune down it will be harder and harder to get enough string tension at that scale.
jackson guitar. or schecter. amp wise, mesa dual rectifier through celestions.

Schecter.
Peavey 6505 head for sure if you are on a budget but still want something that sounds good and any cab with v30's in it.

Ibanez RG for guitar, and either Mesa, Krank, or Peavy for amps.

I've been an Ibanez 7 string kinda guy for 10 years now. (not good for drop c. go 7 if you want b standard, drop a or g#.) for an amp, peavey 6505 agreed. I use an mxr 10 band to brighten the eq.

Yeah thats fairly open...look into Mesa Boogie Rectifiers, Peavey 5150/6505's, Bugeras, B-52 AT series, VHT/Fryette, ENGL, ect. ect. Jackson, ESP, Parker, PRS, certain BC-Riches, Ibanez. Will you be playing in a band or just jamming/bedroom playing?

if you're gonna go down that low you might wanna think about a baritone guitar. i'm playing a gibson sg in drop c# and am already having a lot of problems with buzzing (especially higher up the neck).

Have you tried heavier gauge strings? Have you had the guitar professionally setup for the drop C# tuning?

yup. i'm playing earnie ball heavy bottom skinny tops and my guitar is being set up twice a year by a luthier. it's pretty spot on, but there are some problems up on the 21st and 22nd fret.
couldn't imagine tuning down to drop c with that kind of guitar though.
My guitarist is a death metal guy... his other band plays in C standard... so he has two guitars, and it pisses me off how the much better sounding one is strung for C standard, whilst the one he uses in my band is in standard/drop-D. The guy who wrote that you should get it professionally strung is the best advice I see so far... or a baritone guitar. I fucked up my Music Man John Petrucci series guitar because of all the different tunings I played with... adjusting the truss rod just doesn't seem to fix a warped neck anymore.
Serves me right I suppose.
I'd go with a Mesa Boogie Dual or Triple Rectifier or a Peavey 6505... if you're going to go boutique amp, you have a lot more options for you... but I can't comment on that too much as I haven't had the opportunity to try out many amps.

I've played metalcore with a Schecter Omen for a guitar, it has a nice C Standard sound, I love it. For my amp, I use Peavey 6505 for an amp, also.

ive been playing in drop c for about 3 years now with an epiphone les paul custom going monster cable into an old school peavey supreme (with the thrash button) into a crate blue voodoo cab. its been nothing short of perfect for me.
as long as you get your guitar professinally setup for the tuning youre playing in and use heavier gauge strings (i play 10s, but 11s are really a better choice probably) your guitar should be fine regardless of what it is....just find a guitar that likes you.
as far as your amp...i believe in solid state or transtube...but tubes are right for some people. depends on how much warmth you want in your tone.

Agreed with the poster above. I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio and play in C# standard and play pop-punk. When recording I use .13 gauge strings and for playing live between .10-11 gauge.
From my experience, I like Ibanez for most metal, but I like Schecter for it's versatility. I find Ibanez to be more... punchy, so if you want a hard-hitting sound, I'd go with Ibanez.
Ibanez RG3EXFM1 with Ernie Ball "Heavy bottom, skinny top" strings should be a good setup because it's relatively cheap. I had the privilege of trying it out with a Peavy amp in my Guitar Center, it has a nice Metal sound.
It's Schecter counterpart would be a Damien 6, maybe chipping in another $50 for the Floyd-Rose trem model. I run the string-thru model and it plays like a dream, but that's just me because I can't play a neck-thru guitar.
It's all about preference. If I were you, I'd go with Ibanez because I find myself using my Schecter for more hard Rock than Metal, but it does play Metal quite well.
play in standard you poser
The only thing that makes standard the standard, is someone set it up to be the standard.
Drop-D/Drop-C is kinda the standard for metalcore. So, I'm playing in a standard one way or another.
Overall, thanks for the advice guys. Looks like I get to go guitar shopping soon! :D

Check out Hughes and Kettner amps. A buddy of mine craigslisted a head and it had some of the heaviest sound I've ever heard from an amp, even heavier than any of the Mesa's that I've played.

When is hte last time you had a set-up?
I have a 72' Tele Deluxe, and granted I am not playing metalcore, I play in a full-step down pretty frequently (aka C, minus the dropping the low-e string).
It's all about the set-up and string gauge guys... If your playing below a half-step, I would recommend nothing short of 11.49s.

Also make sure you have the right pickguard on. It's about 95% of the metal tone.

i'm rocking a les paul with marshall jcm...works pretty well but i'd record with something different
Like I said. A used 6505/5150 will blow anything in that price range out of the water.
