Despite the fact that everyone wants to bitch about how pointless, plotted and popularized this tv show have become.....There still is some talent!
This the first year I've watched and I can relate/appreciate the TALENT these people have.
My favorites this year (small descripition included cause lord knows no one knows names):
Crystal Bowersox (dreads)
Katie Stevens (16 year old portuguese girl)
Didi Benami (waitress)
Lilly Scott (white-blone hair)
Casey James (blues singer/guitarist)
Jon Park (asian)
Jermaine Sellers (church singer)
So.....stop being so damn cynical and talk about who you think is the best SINGER on the show!
Try the 'Entertainment' forum, that's where discussions about TV shows go. I don't think 'haters' would disagree that is a group of good singers, they probably dislike other aspects of the show.

I think discussing the talent that these musicinas have does belong in the music section. I, along with many others, hate the way the show is over dramatized. However, their song writing/cover skills are excellant this year.

Fake show is fake.
Jon Park went to my high school and is decent friends with my younger bro. I have never watched an episode of this show, but I might DVR some of them to see his performances.
Fake show is fake.
Fake show? I seriously dislike American Idol but I'm not sure what's "fake" about it, are the performers all animatronic?

How could the OP have not included Andrew Garcia?

Cannot stand her. The other girl (Tori...?) should've gotten through instead.

Ellen shouldn't have gotten in as a judge, what does she know about music?

I like Ellen as an entertainer, not so much as a judge.
Her comedic relief of antagonizing the contestants only to tell them they made it is already old. :(

I debated on that. Liked his Paula cover but he comes off as very typical.

THANK YOU! I should have done a multi-quote but I'm new to this shit. The judging and dialogue may be fakey, but these people can SING! Musicians alike can agree, singing is difficult.

Multiquote took me years to perfect, don't sweat it.
A lot of the show is produced (i.e. picking people with better stories over better singers who are boring) but "fake" is difficult to justify, they aren't up there lipsynching or using autotune.

He is a great singer. This being the first year I've actually paid attention to the show, I am pleased with the talent.
Id have to say my favorite from the years past was Megan Joy from last year. What a great, smokey/jazzy voice.

She absolutely bombed once she got into the top 12. I loved her in the audition and hollywood rounds, but yikes. She was NOT good down the stretch.

i love andrew garcia, but i don't see why this discussion hasn't already headed into the american idol thread in the entertainment forum. just because you have a cool radiohead avatar doesn't mean you can make pointless threads.

I wanted to be focused on the SINGING chops and SONG choice on the show.
Sorry officer.

creativity's always been more important that performance capability to me, and definitely more important than image or visual performance, so i just don't agree with the kind of talent the show looks for.

The ability to sing does not make one a musician.

How so? Does the ability to play guitar not make someone a musician??

It's very, very possible to sing with no knowledge of music in general. I'll bet most of the auditions for the show are by people who have no musical knowledge, they're just able to sing. When you play an instrument you have to have musical knowledge... Lots of people are able to sing but aren't "musicians."

I don't agree with this at all. First there are a few contestants out of Berklee (the most prestegious music school in the US). Also, many great muscians and composers have learned by ear WITHOUT formal music theory knowledge. To be able to sing, you must know key, pitch, tone, etc.

Not necessarily, you just need to match it. I'm not saying none of them are musicians, I'm just saying American Idol isn't a musician competition and many contestants aren't musicians. You don't need formal music theory knowledge to learn, but I'll bet that all composers can tell you what an A or G is.

oh man, i love her haha. i liked tori too though. i think tori should have taken the place of that girl janelle. i think that's her name, the one that sang love story and messed up the words in the beginning.

megan joy has been my favorite out of any american idol contestant ever. i really hope she puts out an album soon, her voice is incredible.

i agree, she was not very good in the top 12, and it was really sad to see her struggle.

You don't have to have it. My friend who is the self-taught drummer in my band also picked up guitar. For a while he didn't even know the names of the chords he was playing or which strings were which notes, but he still messed around and created the main progressions for most of our songs.

If he's the dude that covered Paula Abdul. This. That guy and the girl with dreads have immense voices that don't fit into that prototypical American Idol sound.

Yeah, I didn't think she'd make it. Or that one girl who can't use one side of her face. I didn't think she should've made it either.

i agree so much, and i love that they don't automatically dismiss people like that just because they may not look or sound the generic, typical american idol way.
Yeah, I didn't think she'd make it. Or that one girl who can't use one side of her face. I didn't think she should've made it either.
yes! those were my two choices over the girl that made it. i didn't like janelle's voice at alllll.

She knows how to work an audience which just as important as vocal ability.
Kyle, who sings for my band, used to play folk shows with Lilly Scott in high school. And our keyboardist knows the dude with glasses that started begging and crying not to be kicked off on group week.
I want to know a contestant!

My favorite so far are Aaron Kelly for his awesome voice; he's like a better version of David Archuleta. Also I have liked Tyler Grady for his 70's frontman look. I bet they'll both do well.
Yes they're great singers. No I don't care how they do in a competition.

The chick with the dreads annoys me for some reason.
However I'm loving that one Lambert guy. Not positive on my favorites yet for this season besides him yet. I'll have to decide next week.

Do not like that Aaron kid at all. Tyler Grady's cool, but I don't think he'll actually end up making it that far.
I never thought that the Idols, X-Factors, insert country here's got talent's didn't introduce new people with talent (and when i say talent i mean a good voice/dance moves). What pisses me off about it is that it makes people think more about fame and fortune than they are about the music. Once upon a time, people wouldn't be like that because there was no quick route to success, you had to plug away in shitty little bars, living in your shitty little transit van and maybe if you got lucky, you could wind up in the charts for a day. NOW people have this idea that they can just go on some show, enter a fictional "bootcamp" and never have to worry about all the hard stuff that actually drives this fucking industry!
