I feel like I've been waiting for this to come out for years.

An aging French magician who is a dead ringer for Jacques Tati uses sleight-of-hand to give a clueless Scottish girl a poetic assist toward adulthood in The Illusionist. Five years in the making, master animator Sylvain Chomet’s follow-up to The Triplets Of Belleville deploys superb hand-drawn imagery to bring to life an unproduced screenplay the late Tati finished in 1959. Told with no dialogue but carried along by deeply evocative sound design, this visually rewarding film’s timeless, near-universal appeal should translate to widespread critical praise and art house play.

Very nice review here:

The artwork in this film is absolutely breathtaking.

After Cannes the hype for this film is going to be enormous... deservedly.

Embarrassingly, I haven't seen Triplets yet. Those stills look very Bakshi-esque, is that sort of Chomet's style?

There are definitely similarities. Chomet's style is a bit more cartoony.

Yeah, I don't see much of a similarity in Triplets, but damned if I wouldn't have been certain those last two stills from The Illusionist were Ralph's.

Saw it last Thursday in Paris and had a fantastic time. I'm not sure that it's a better film than Triplettes, but I enjoyed it much more. Highly recommended.
