Inspired by McIrish, which band is more overrated: Coldplay or U2?

Coldplay, even though I accidentally voted for U2.

Coldplay. I have a really hard time calling U2 overrated for whatever reason.
U2, i like coldplay better so in my opinion any positive rate they get is a fair rate and is not overrated. lol

Watch this and tell me U2 is overrated. They are the best arena show experience, most of their albums are thoroughly enjoyable, they have dozens of hit songs.

Edit: Bleh. I voted for U2 because the title was "Coldplay or U2" so I assumed it was which band I enjoyed the most.

Coldplay may be very slightly over rated, but they're still pretty great. U2 is not over rated at all, in fact I'd say the opposite.

I'm your age there champ, and Coldplay plays a historic role in music history as they are one of the last megabands to ever exist. There were a few economics papers written about the economic model of a superstar and megabands - or bands that produce several incredibly powerful selling albums. With the downtrend in cd and music sales, Coldplay is viewed as one of the last bands to attain this status - an impressive feat as their record releases were not before the sales declines.
(Some have argued that Daughtry is on his way to potentially attaining the title of the last megaband, but I don't agree with that.)

nothing you say has to do with the impact related to Music, while i agree there is place for conversing about record sales, the fact that U2 dominate that conversation, especially if we discuss touring revenues, marginalizes your already marginal point. Taking into consideration all facets of bands and their place in history U2 destroys it. Coldplay is just the new version of linkin park in terms of people being surprised at sales of current popular artists.

So let me respond to a few things here:
nothing you say has to do with the impact related to Music
Coldplay had a large enough widespread appeal to reach massive sales levels in an era of declining music. That is an incredibly impressive feat and speaks to their popularity. And to even argue that they haven't had influence is absurd. Congratulations for jumping on the "it's cool to hate coldplay" bandwagon. Doesn't mean you're right.
the fact that U2 dominate that conversation, especially if we discuss touring revenues, marginalizes your already marginal point.
Of course U2 will dominate a touring revenue discussion - they've been around far longer than coldplay has. That's a ridiculous point. And I usually like to have discussions that don't involve baiting or belittling. You can keep those last bits to yourself.
Coldplay is just the new version of linkin park in terms of people being surprised at sales of current popular artists.
I'll word this response in a way you seem to like to argue with people: Once I read this sentence of your post I realized your opinion is completely idiotic and invalid.
It seems like that's the way you like to argue, so hopefully it was best understood when I put it in your terms.

Fuck you.
U2 has been around for 34 years. Respect your elders. Both bands have albums on rolling stone's 100 best albums of all time (u2: the Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, War, All That You Can't Leave Behind, Boy. Coldplay: A Rush of Blood to the Head) if you doubt the judgement of Rolling Stone, perhaps you just don't have a good taste in music

I fear that so many dogging on U2 have no knowledge of their previous work or the mark they've made in the music world.

Thank you. Finally someone agrees. The favourite band of the people who are dogging on u2 are actually probably inspired by u2

I didn't understand what the big deal about U2 was until the day I stole my brother's War cassette years ago. The U2 of recent years is nothing like classic U2.

Yes. They have changed their style a few times. If you liked war, you'd probably also like Boy and October. After war, Brian Eno came in and their style was changed somewhat
