I worry that many of these bands will butcher these great classics. That's always the problem with classic rock covers though. It should be interesting to hear though, and some look like they might be good.

The problem with most of these comps is they pick songs with chord structures and melodies that don't lend themselves to the pop-punk (or whatver you choose to call them) style. The Cab doing "Disturbia" before. Why? It's all dark and minor, and it still sounds that way when you add guitars.
The ones I think might translate well to the particular band's style:
Envy on the Coast - All Along the Watchtower
Every Avenue - Take Me Home Tonight
The Summer Set - Rock and Roll All Night
And especially:
We the Kings - Caught Up in You

I'm excited about this compilation. hit the lights covering boston will be real interesting and i cant wait to hear them put their own spin on it
EOTC should be pretty good too as theyre pretty good musicians so theres a chance itll be a respectable cover
cavanaughpark09
02/23/10, 11:34 AM
Actually interested to hear a couple of these. Live covers tend to suck but some of the recorded ones I've heard haven't been awful.
a) I cannot stand this genre of music in general. They spend more time on their hair than they do on making decent music.
b) They aren't punk. And the compilation claims they are. False advertisement makes me sad :|
matchbox202006
02/23/10, 11:41 AM
... i can only hope they pull off this miracle. If Every Avenue screws up "take me home tonight", then i will lose any fleeting respect i have for their music. Cool idead though, i was wondering what the next Punk Goes... compilation would be.

i like that this shitty comp claims that all along the watchtower was originally recorded by jimi hendrix instead of bob dylan.
it's great to know that stupid scenesters have absolutely no concept of the history of music while they wantonly have their way with it.

Okay, yeah, I'll amend to that to most/some acoustic covers. If a full band is going to do a cover though it usually needs to be really well rehearsed to do well. I've heard some really horrible ones that bands have decided to do on a whim in the middle of a show.

In fairness, the version they're going to attempt was originally recorded by Jimi. They're definitely not going to do it as acoustic folk.

In fairness, the version they're going to attempt won't sound anything like Jimi so it probably makes better sense to go with dylan though so they don't look as bad as their instruments as they are.
that's what i'd do anyway.

I know it's not worth arguing because you obviously hate them, but Envy plays a great live show. I can see not liking their music, but they're pretty good instrumentalists. Not that I'm overly optimistic about this cover, but the have the ability if they can manage the ingenuity.
And "Watchtower" isn't Jimi's most techically impressive performance. He put the song first on that one. His lead playing is pretty restrained.
Daigle lol
02/23/10, 12:43 PM
haha some of these actually kinda look cool, Like Hit the Lights with More than a Feeling lol
More Than A Feeling will probably sound good by these guys.. I kind of want to hear the Almost too, and possibly Never Say Never, ONLY because Bohemian Rhapsody covered by his pathetic whiny voice will be the joke of the year.

Actually Silverstien's cover of "Apologize" is quite good if you dig the sing/scream thing. And All Time Low's "Umbrella" was acceptable.

Yeah it was a minor hit when it came out, was a huge hit when they released it after Toys in the Attic, got some renewed airplay when they did it with an orchestra and has been getting worn out on classic rock stations around New England for a good few decades now.

i love all these comments about these bands not being punk. it has been that way for a while now, get over it. also, putting these bands on here is great business move. i'm actually excited for quite a few of these.
My issue is not that they aren't punk... it's that they aren't very good bands.

This album is the worst thing I have ever heard. These comps need to stop immediately if they're going to keep coming out with shit like this. Not one good cover on the whole album. They turned some great, classic songs (not all of them were really "classic rock" to begin with) and turned them into whiny, emo bullshit. You fail at life. Never(s) listen to Queen ever in your sad sad life
I can listen to whatever I want.
And do you think Never Shout Never covered the song to try and top the original? I don't think so. It's simply just a cover, and I actually like it. So do alot of others.

Don't you mean Nevers Shout Never? It's simply just a piece of shit. And you and others, are quite retarded for thinking it is at all even good, even for a cover

Wow. I really love how a bunch of members can criticize others opinions here like it's wrong.
To be honest, they wouldn't of released it if it wasn't any good. It's a cover, it's not supposed to be perfection when compared to the original. If you don't like it, then simply just don't listen to it.

Wrong. Bands like Brokencyde have record deals. People release things regardless of quality, so try again.

Alright, for once I can agree with you here.

I was very disappointed with this album. Every song sounds like complete and udder crap. The only two songs that I thought were half decent were Blessthefall's cover of Dream On and Envy on The Coast's cover of All Along the Watchtower.
Queen has officially been ruined for me.

I like the Versaemerge, I See Stars, We The Kings, and the Almost ones, I am guilty. Some weren't bad. But majority were pretty awful.
My main problem is Bohemian Rhapsody is one of those songs that should never be covered, ever. Like Stairway to Heaven, or Freebird.
Alright, giving this a listen now. Pop 2 sucked because it felt so incredibly lazy. Crunk was mediocrity at best as well, with only a couple cool covers. (Say Anything making one of my favorite covers ever.)
My problem is that sometimes I see people either say "god, it sounds nothing like the original song" and "god, it sounds just like the original song". It's just a throwaway album made for fun. I try to base the songs on whether or not they sound good and not whether they stray too far or too closely to the originals. That's simply up to the band to interpret.
So far, I'm on track 4 and it's pretty solid. Hit the Lights and The Almost did faithful covers and Versa did a fairly interesting version. Listening to Mayday Parade's "We Are the Champions" now and I'm surprised that I enjoy it.
I am quite scared to hear "Bohemian Rhapsody" though.

nevershoutnever sucks he covered the beatles on the bamboozle road show last yr and it was god fucking awful. so ruining queen is whatever. the beatles are fucking legends and shouldn't ever be covered.
Continuing my as-I-listen review:
This "Rock N Roll All Night" cover is kind of boring. Then again, I don't like Kiss. But uh... is this how The Summer Set always sounds? The vocals sound like they sped it up like the Chipmunks.
Okay, I've honestly never heard this "Caught Up in You" song so I'm just going to call it a catchy pop rock song. It doesn't sound familiar to me at all.
The "Separate Ways" cover is kind of poor. It's purely okay at first, then the screaming comes in. Sorry, I just hate that terrible mindless screaming. I didn't like this "Your Love" cover at first but it kind of grew on me. ... And as I typed that, the screaming started.
And now one of the best riffs ever just started. Time for "Fear the Reaper". I hate this trend of singers kicking themselves in the balls before they sing. Not liking this very much.
I'm kind of liking the "Crazy Train" cover though. Pretty fun.
