Didn't see an official thread so forgive me if there is one that I could not find. Another remarkably influential act, this time infusing the rock 'n' roll landscape of the 90s with a breath of fresh air. Stereolab are phenomenal sonic synthesists, blending tuneful 60s song with krautrock, bossa nova, lounge pop, and so on. The results are often stunning, equally melodic and mesmerizing, peppy and melancholic. They're still going strong actually, although perhaps not in as compelling fashion as in the mid-90s when they released must-listens Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements as well as Emperor Tomato Ketchup. Oh, I suppose I should warn those who aren't particularly keen on female vocalists: Laetitia Sadier's presence is an integral player in Stereolab's sound. Anyway, discuss, discover, etc.

Again, here (http://sunonthesand.com/2010/my-little-corner-of-the-world-volume-44/)'s a rec for Transient...

Never heard, but sounds interesting from your description and your mentions are usually worth a spin in my book. Their discography is pretty extensive on Spotify, where do you recommend starting? Just about to spin Emperor Tomato Ketchup right now.

I thought I popped into all your recommendation threads. How did I overlook this one? Good stuff, as usual. Is there a specific album you think I should start out with? That second song you posted looks like it's from Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements, which you called an essential listen, so I guess I could start there.

Either that or Empire Tomato Ketchup. Both are fantastic.

Either one's a pretty sure bet, Tim. I prefer Transient personally but most seem fonder of Tomato.
Bump. Listening to Cobra and Phases and its pretty great. Probably my favorite. Also, they just released a new album (recorded pre-hiatus) called Not Music. Can't wait to listen.

This is the kind of uncle I want to be, the one that slips his 6 year old nephews cassette tapes of weird music.

Not Music is a bit of a disappointment. It's been a long and gradual slide ever since the mid-90s.

Springtime should see lots of spins for the Lab.
I actually haven't heard Laetitia's solo outing though, or if I have, I don't remember it. Any good?

Gah, why does Emperor Tomato Ketchup has to be so incosistent? The first four tracks are great, but everything else is just bleh. I really want to like it more than i do, but i just can't

I kind of feel the same way about Emperor Tomato Ketchup. There are some tracks scattered throughout that I don't really care for. "Cybele's Reviere" and "Les Yper-Sound" are so fucking good though.

Yeah, as I also mentioned in my other post up above, Cybele's Reverie is the only song i want to listen to at times. The album definetly feels like its a little too ambitious for its own good
