i was going to ask a girl i'm extremely interested to our senior prom. however just the other day i was talking to her and she goes: 'GUESS WHAT?' and i say 'WHAT?!' and she responds with "i just bought tickets to see say anything and angels and airwaves on may 7th! are you going?"
this is the problem. may 7th is the day of my senior prom. if it was junior prom, i would totally be going to the concert. no question. but senior prom is different.
the obvious answer is to ask someone else. however, i have no idea who else to ask. and i have a type of "date" with this girl on saturday (well, what i like to see as a date. i have no idea if she feels the same way) and i think she might like me. as she said she had a really good time at my winter dance with me.
i know i sound like every guy on here. but it would be nice to hear what a bunch of strangers on ap.net think. try to keep the obnoxious comments to yourself, i know all of you will be tempted though.
thanks.

I'm sure that if she's anything like most girls, she would ditch any show to go to prom with someone she's interested in, but that's what it all comes down to: Whether or not she's interested in you. :O
Ask her.
Concert... Proms are boring as fuck especially when you go with someone you could care less about.

this is complicated. she has no cell phone and is rarely ever online. and we don't go to school together (i go to an all-guy school and she goes to a local public school). and i never feel comfortable calling her house. she's also ridiculously busy.

I'm just speculating here, but based on my own experience as an awkward teenager, the no cell phone thing sounds awfully suspicious. Also, you'll learn that girls are never too busy when it comes to guys that they are actually interested in. Sounds like you're in the friendzone.
If you really want to see the bands, go to the concert, but don't do it just for her.

I don't know dude, senior prom happens once. It's kind of a right of passage, whether or not it ends up being a good time. Say Anything will be back, your prom won't.

DEEGAN. we went to say anything in november. this is prom we're talking about here kid. YOURE GOING TO FUCKING PROM. you cant skip prom bro. you yell at me for not going to fucking formal, and you're trying to get out of prom? fuck that bro, even if i have to hire a whore to go with you, you're going.
i'm almost torn on this.
the "take a friend, not your crush" to prom is absolutely 100% the way to go if you want to go to prom. however, if this is your senior prom then you already went to your junior right? you've already had the prom experience aka a tux that you're just going to throw money down for just so you can return it, tickets that are way too expensive, bad food, probably some obnoxious drunk people, most likely a few girls crying because their boyfriend/date danced with someone else.
if you really like her, go to the show. it's a sweet gesture.

I went to both junior and senior prom and had a great time. Yeah prom can be pretty lame, but even a lame event is a good time if you're with people that matter. I would go to prom unless a) you went to junior prom or b) you really can't find anyone you want to go with

before we started dating my (now) ex-girfriend (and still close friend) and i were just getting interested in each other but her dad didn't let her go with me so i had to take this other lame hipster girl who asked me. it wasn't fun and she was just on her fucking sidekick cell phone the entire time; and she expected certain things from me that i didn't want to do by the end of the night. we were hardly friends. that said, i ended up going to my (then) future gf's prom the following weekend which was a blast and meaningful for both of us.
so basically, go to yr prom w/someone you want to, but if that meaningful person isn't going, then either go w/her to the show or don't go to prom at all. it's not really that big a deal, it's not like the movies. mine wasn't even that bad per se, just not as sentimental as everyone tries to believe. you will have the weight of her absence on your conscience the whole time, and i was just lucky enough to be able to go to my gf's prom w/her after. do what's best for you.

here's the thing: when i was in high school, i was one of those people who went to concerts instead of dances. i mean, a dance ticket of $20 and a dress around $30, and the dinner before, and the hassle of getting ready... just wasn't my thing. so it just seemed better to ditch dances and go to concerts. but now i kinda miss dances. that's not t say i regret going to that jimmy eat world/paramore concert instead of spring fling. i'm just saying i finally understand why my parents encouraged me to go to dances instead of concerts. concerts are always going to be there, but these high school dances are.. well, limited to high school.
so i guess i'm voting ask someone else... it's going to get easier to ask people to prom when it's about 1 1/2 to 2 months closer. maybe because people are desperate for a date? haha idk.. but you'll find someone. try meeting people outside of your school? friends of friends?

You go to prom. Like someone said earlier prom is a rite of passage. It's one of those things you just do. When your kids are that age, they will ask you about your prom. If you told them you went and saw Say Anything instead, they will be like "Who?" Maybe I'm biased as prom was a big deal in my school and I had a great time. You might have more fun at the show, but I guarantee you will regret it.

This. You need to find out (especially since you only "like" Say Anything) if she actually likes you. If you go and you remain in the friendzone and to her, you being there made no difference to her night then you will probably feel like shit afterwards. Maybe if you just mention to her that you only "like" Say Anything, and she tries convincing you to go with her, that may be a sign. You should def find out how she feels about you though.
PS, I skipped my prom and went to a Mindless Self-Indulgence show and then met up with my besties afterwards for the after-prom parties. I'll never regret it.
Holy shit, I wish I could of gone to prom. Ten years from now you're more likely to remember a decent prom then you are a good show.
Wrong. If the show doesn't go off as planned, especially since he only "likes" Say Anything, then you may be right. But it is completely possible to have a memorable night. I will never regret my decision, and I'll remember my "prom night" forever. It's not just the show, it's the experience and the memories. This could be the night that something between he and her really happens and turns into a great memory.

I think you really need to wait till this thing on saturday. If it is a date then ask her about going to the prom with you anyway, see what her reaction is. Bands tour all the time, senior proms are only once.
On the other hand, it is just a social convention. You could just go to the concert.

All these people saying "Go to the show" are out of their fucking minds.
How many concerts have I been to in my life? Somewhere in the neighborhood of 100, give or take. Out of those 100, there are maybe 20 that I really, truly remember.
How many times do you get to go to senior prom? Only once. And who gives a fuck if the girl is going to be your future wife, it's about the experience, getting a tux, seeing her looking all hot and shit, being with your friends, going to party(ies) afterward, spending the weekend at a lake house getting awkward handjobs.
If you/she really want to go to the show the baller thing to do would be to get tix for the next closest date, then take her to prom and go to that show.

Your post, the one that was quoted by AndrewIce, is the 'this' of the thread.
OP, if you don't have fun now, you never will. And as for fun goes, I promise there'll be another concert to go to.

Depends on timing. If there is enough time to go to Prom and get the formalities done with (granted you aren't invited to an awesome after-prom party which as of now I am guessing you aren't) and get to the concert too then go to both. Most opening acts for big concerts suck anyway. Like I saw Sting and his opening act was his son who I didn't know existed...

id say there is a better chance getting lucky at a prom then at a show. especially tom delonge's "lets all love eachother/koom-by-ah" bullshit
I didn't fuck at prom but I did at a concert!

Dave Matthews Band. It's HUUUUGGEEE in Connecticut. It was a lot of fun! Pre-game with everyone you know for hours then go party some more inside!
Just stop giving your opinion, okay?
Ohhh, BURN. Unnecessary.

Ohhh, BURN. Unnecessary.
Your face is unnecessary.
But seriously, you have no potential.

Damn, you're clever.
But seriously, you're going to spend the rest of your life alone.

Our senior prom is the same day as the AVA / Say Anything show too. Philly whaddup?!
I'd say ask to go to the show with her...like everyone else has already said, proms blow. I'd DEFINITELY be more interested in a guy that wanted to go to a fucking awesome show with me insead of lame-o prom.

yeah, well. there's most likely not even a chance with this girl anyway. we were supposed to hang out tonight, but she just canceled on me last minute because she has to write some college essays and her mom isn't letting her go out. i'm gonna assume that she actually has to write the college essays but i don't know. there's the little paranoid part of me that says she just doesn't even want to spend any time with me.
also. i basically had this great girl like 9 months ago (end of my junior year), but i listened to some douche bag tell me that she wasn't interested. and everything got fucked up. i'm just realizing how much i lost by letting go of this girl.
i'm sorry i'm such a whiny teenager.
