Everything goes under your bed.

If the beds are loft beds (I think most dorm beds are, but I've been places where they're not), loft it up so you can store stuff under it. Mine was lofted up pretty good already and I fit a few plastic containers with tons of stuff in them under it. You might have to ask maintenance to loft it up more for you, but I'd say don't go too far up because man I fell out of it once and that was a bitch.

Also, make sure you follow room inspection rules if the dorm has any because there could be fines. Like, once over Thanksgiving break I left appliances plugged in because I didn't know it was a rule to unplug everything over breaks, and that would have been a $25 fine, but the RA let me off.

Raise your bed and put two bean bags, as well as a tv, underneath. This will be your fort.

In my experience dorm rooms don't really allow for much customization. You do what you can with what you get.

I know the beds in my friends dorm at pitt make an awesome pong table if you take the mattress off, if that means anything to you.

Loft the beds and store shit. Bring what you think you need, then a week or so later go buy everything else you ARE going to forget. You won't be fully prepared, but that's kind of the college experience every freshman goes through. :)

If you eat sardines or any kind of really strong smelling soup open a window and dispose of the remains quickly.
That shit gets intense in a small room; my roommate has yet to learn this.

For the past two years I've lofted my bed and put my desk underneath so I'd have more room for activities.

Keep it tidy, dust/clean at least every two weeks. You'd be surprised how much this has an effect on your overall well-being.

Buy sticky tack that you can put stuff on the wall with that won't remove paint. Customizing your room is another huge mood booster. I have signed band posters, pictures of me and the girlyfriend, South African art (where I volunteered for two years), and most importantly: pictures of the Savior that remind me to make good decisions.

I don't "loft" my bed like others do, but I went to a local hardware store and bought four cinder blocks that I placed under the four corners. Then I bought plastic storage tubs at Walmart for a few dollars and put seasonal clothing, movies, etc... under there instead of overloading my bookcase.

In general, a more vertical storage approach will benefit you more than anything else. If all else fails, sell your extra crap and invest the money for your retirement. ;-)

I preferred the bed on the ground so people had a place to sit when I had them over. Get as big of a fridge as they'll let you and a microwave. Stack things. Put the TV on the mini-fridge. My room mate and I stacked out dressers too. Maybe a couple of folding camping charis to put under your bed or in the closet. Put posters and stuff on the wall so it doesn't look boring, but not the cliché posters everyone puts up. If you're into that kind of thing, put up a tapestry or wall hanging or something. Maybe get some extra lighting. Good quality speakers are a 100% must have for me.

Most importantly, do you best to make it your own, so it's not like you're coming to a hotel room every night.

All sound advice in here so far. I would also add that I never did any of this myself. I was a hermit, had my headphones on constantly so I couldn't hear my roommates and they wouldn't talk to me. I didn't hang a single poster/picture/etc. I hid just about everything I owned with the exception of my clothing. Looked like my roommates had an empty bunk for another roommate. I kept most of my things in my car. I'm not sure you could handle this lifestyle so I'd go with the advice given already. Good luck and take your fuckin' headphones off once in a while.

Well for starters I was not so outgoing around people I didn't know at the time, and on top of that I hated my roommate(s). I eventually moved out and got my own place there, later discovered college sucked for me there completely and moved home.

I lived in a "study lounge" that was converted to a quad except it wasn't set up to be a dorm room at all. For 4 girls, we had to share 2 girls to one closet and 2 girls to one nightstand. That was whack. :-(

Get a trunk with a lock, they sell cheap ones at Target, to put things in you care about/expensive stuff. Probably one of the most handy things I bought. Also you are not going to want to wash dishes up there so just go for paper/plastic everything so it can be thrown out easily. Make sure you have cleaning supplies such as a small broom and windex and stuff. Also check your schools rules about lamps and stuff, we weren't allowed to have anything plastic because it was a fire hazard, so all the lamps needed glass encasing or whatever.

this list is pretty helpful too: http://acatnamedollie.livejournal.com/391.html

Man that's weird about glass lamps. I would think they wouldn't want you using those since they break easily.
And even though it's a burden I think I'm gonna go with real dishware. I don't want to contribute massively to the landfill and waste money at the same time. And good call on the broom, I would've forgotten that.

Had an epiphany today that I should give up the ghost and go to UB. The only thing is (and don't judge me) I feel like I'll be bored as all hell in the Honors dorm, everything I've heard about it sounds like it's this quiet studious place whereas I would like to be loud and obnoxious.

I'm not at a real college yet, so don't base this solely on me, but from what I've gathered from staying at my friends dorm almost weekly, it's this. A single room is awesome if you have your friends living in the same building, that way you can have your own space and your friends can come and go as you please and not have to put up with some of the bullshit you would otherwise. It's what I plan on doing in the fall

Good luck. Freshman year, I had a random roommate and it worked out extremely well....sophomore year I lived in a triple with a girl I knew from freshman year and her friend. Her friend and I became best friends and we both ended up not being able to stand the girl we were friends with (make sense?) haha. It's hard to live in such a small space with someone you know, sooner or later you are going to want your privacy from each other.

As far as organizing your dorm room, I did this with my desk both years I lived in the dorm:http://i49.tinypic.com/15ialhv.jpg
Yes, the cinder blocks look extremely tacky..but they were nice because you could use the holes for storage too.

Have fun with decorating it though, I loved my room both years...you'll learn your own organizational methods within the first month or two.

basically what i came here to say. my bed was bunked on top of my roommates, and i fell off of it the third or fourth week of classes, almost broke my arm, and was in a sling for like a week afterwards. not cool.

you can get fined?

At my college you could. They'd have the little fines, like the $25 thing, but also if the floor got damages and they couldn't figure out the person/people responsible, the entire floor would split the cost and you get billed at the end of the semester. One semester in my friend's dorm somebody went through and smashed every exit sign on one of the floors and some other stuff. I can only imagine what the fines were for that.

I'm pretty lucky because I'm not from outside the...uh, state (to make it easier, don't want to start a small lecture of Indonesian geography) and the university-owned dorms are prioritized for out-of-state students. Most people move out of there in about a year though, but for some reason we're not into finding our own places like houses and apartments like American kids. A lot of properties around campus, have a sort of dormlike format, where they rent of rooms with ensuites. Pretty much exactly like a dorm room but some, like mine have easier access to my department instead of the university dorms which are centralized in one place. Facilities are pretty much the same though: bed, wardrobe/dresser, desk, bathroom, shared kitchen/common area but the best thing is that most people rent one on their own, so no roommates :).

I'm planning to post pictures someday but I'll wait til the decor's done, and I'm still in the "planning" stage.

My roommate freshman year was completely wasted (and for some reason completely naked) and fell off of his bed lofted at the highest setting, directly onto his head on the linoleum floor. Many lulz were had

if you have a bunk, take the lower and make a fort like i did. it's like your own room and it blocks the light on weekend mornings when you want to sleep in.

Get there really early to pick your bed too.

If you loft your bed, DON'T put your desk under it like everyone's saying, instead put the dresser under it and fridge and whatnot under it, and then put your desk next to the bed (not on the ladder side) and when you have to get in and out of bed, use the "chair - desk - bed" method. It's SO much easier than those damn side ladders.

Get a fan, the room gets hot as balls in the summer.

Don't touch the popcorn ceiling, no matter what anyone says, it's asbestos.

Don't put a black light, christmas lights, or a lamp with arms in your room unless you want to have to write a three page paper for each about what you did "wrong".

Keep as much stuff as you can away, rather than laying out.

I ended up rooming with a girl from high school this year, and it worked out fine because we were both really laid back and tend to stay away from drama. So go for it if you feel like it would be fine; I can't imagine what I would do if I didn't room with her. I'm pretty quiet so it was a great way to force myself to meet people with her.

Opinions on rooming with a friend?

I'm not in college yet, but my best friend is living with one of her good friends and it's so bad that they're not living together next year and basically hate each other. They fight over the pettiest things and they don't even share the same room, just the same suite. Btw I visit all of the time so I see it firsthand, not just a one-sided account of things. Mind you that they were really good friends through out all of high school and are both pretty laid back.. But you really never know what happens behind closed doors and don't know what someone is like at home, so from what I've seen I would stay away from that. You can meet new people and still have your friend too, and if your room gets too crazy you can escape to hers.

As far as the end of the year goes, start taking shit home during the last quarter/semester of the year. Odds are, you've collected WAY more shit over the course of the school year than you've started with and a lot of it probably won't fit in the car ride home for the summer. If you want to avoid having to leave things behind or throw them out, start bringing home clothes and stuff you don't use very often so you'll be able to hold onto them.

Well first of all, SRU is merging with IUP anyway. Pretty sure SRU is just going to be a branch campus. In my opinion, Slippery Rock is the most boring town ever, there's nothing to do. But to each his own. Also, I'm from the suburbs of Philly, so IUP is a hell of a lot closer and actually somewhat close to civilization.

I haven't heard anything about SRU merging with IUP, link me to a source? But yeah, I actually like the small town vibe. I've been looking for one for a while, can't find anything. All of the professors and students here are talking about it though and I'm pretty sure it's legit. As for the woods thing, that's what my friends and I do here usually. There's a lot of cool lakes and places to hike around here where we sit and drink or smoke around a campfire -- it's awesome.

Yeah I just looked around for information on it and I couldn't find anything. But yeah, I'm all about lakes and campfires haha

This thread is of my interest. I'm not going to lie, pretty pumped for college.

What's funny is that I've always wanted to move away, but when I think about it I'm like... "Am I ready for to leave my parents?" and "holy shit! I'm just a kid!". And I'm moving 7 hours away, which I think might even be a plus, I won't rely on my parents as much (besides monetarily of course... haha) .

i thought the same thing, but it works out. you just naturally kind of get used to leaving them.

Anyone have opinions on triples/quads? Looks like I'm going to be stuck in one of them and I am less than thrilled.

uuuuuuuuuugggggggghhhhh
Was one of the things that made me want a small school was those things, they're usually pretty much the same size as double rooms I'm pretty sure

That's if you get a forced one but I paid my deposit early enough that I will choke a bitch if I do. At UB the rooms are actually proper size for 3-4 people but the part that annoys me if that it just cuts down on your chances of ever just being alone.

You can always act cray cray and scare them away, I trust you can do it

Raise your bed and put two bean bags, as well as a tv, underneath. This will be your fort.

that sounds awesome.

I'm in a triple this semester (well i am for another week until it ends)

its not that bad because I like my roommates. the only issue is that I NEVER get any alone time. there is always someone else in the room.

and you don't have a lot of space so shit just piles up

I applied at Penn without a room preference in the building I want to live in (I figured it would be easier to get into the building that way), so I'll be in a suite that's either a double with two bedrooms, a triple with three bedrooms, or a quad with three bedrooms. They all seem giant and I know kids who have lived there before - I think as long as you keep your shit clean then living with three other people can go along pretty smoothly.

don't get put in a triple.

shit was so whack.

I was in a 12x 24 room my freshman year with 3 other girls with a small bathroom, no sink/mirror.
it was fucked up like no other.

eventually you'll learn that no roommate = the best.

Random, but once someone puked into the heater of my dorm and it wreaked(sp?) of warm puke for a good month.
End of my story. lol

oh, and don't room with friends, they will be your friends no longer

Honestly, this really depends on a person-per-person basis.
Last year, I roomed with my best friend from high-school. Although we ended up butting heads quite a bit, we both matured through the experience, and have a more mature relationship because of it. Yeah, you WILL see the ugly in your friends that you might have thought didn't exist... but if you and your friend want to make it work, you can.

Mind you, it doesn't ALWAYS work out for the best... both people have to go in with open minds.

I'm gonna be rooming in dorms after 2 years in apartments. Kinda looking forward to the experience, especially meeting a roomate!
