Has anyone tried selling digital download cards at their shows? (Such as those made by dropcards.com.) What were the results like? Would you recommend it?

yeah. didnt really get any bites, it was a pretty bad investment. if you're not a big name then physical copies are the way to go, people just want to pop in your album and give it a quick listen to see if they're into it

I have heard that I fight Dragons did really well with $100 USB drives that included lifetime free digital downloads of their music

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it!
Yeah, if you do it right then you will surely get a good amount of sales. Just make it well worth it to you fans.

at first glance flash drives seemed like a good idea.. but not any better or more cost effective than cds. probably worse since you can't play them in a car and more expensive.

I think we decided to try printing up 100 cards from dropcards.com in addition to our CDs, when we put our EP out, and see if people are interested in them at all. Thankfully it's pretty cheap, like $40 for 100 cards.

We designed and printed our own drop cards.
We're pretty handy with photoshop and printed them on cardstock from a photoprinter.
Inexpensive and it allowed us to give them away for free.

emblemsmusic, when you did this how did you put the technology in place for people to go download your music securely?

We have been doing this since January. Mediafire.com is a wonderful place to host files freely and has an automatic virus scanner.

I've heard of releasing singles for free on business cards. Also, the free lifetime of digital downloads is a great deal too, we've thought about that

Check out IndieCards from BandsOnABudget.com. We offer many different affordable download card options. We host all your content on our site for free indefinitely. Personally, my own bad has used IndieCards and we basically just sell them for "suggested price" or donation. I think as far as selling the cards, it depends how much content or what kind of content (songs/videos/extras) you can get with the cards.

That's what my current band uses too.

Yeah man, people are stupid when it comes to technology and college kids cant even figure out how to use these cards. Bad idea.

I've found that they're a tough sell, man. Kids want to hold something in their hand, you know?

Personally, I would only get these made if I were to give them out for free. Seems like it'd be a great idea for an EP or a single, but it's not something I'd personally pay money for...

the people that dig your band will buy the cd at the show...and continue to see you live. your objective is to get as many people listening to your music as possible and come to more shows to support you, so you should be giving away your album (or at least some tracks off of it) digitally, for free.
when my band records our demo in a few weeks, i plan on putting it on a digital music retailer for those kind enough to pay for it, but i dont expect much revenue from it. we will be selling the cd at the show, and giving away half of it, via mediafire.

i've thought about handing out free cd samplers. like 3 or 4 songs from our album, and putting a business card in the case with a link to download the full album from our bandcamp page for free/pay what you want.

we talked about doing kind of the opposite. we are going to give away half the album for free to download, and sell the full cd at the shows and through some digital retailer. but that's a good month away
