I haven't seen a thread about him so I figure I'll start one.

Anyone else a fan? Less Than Zero is my favorite book of all time, and I'm sure people have seen American Psycho.

And the fact that he murders a child. Sometimes I don't understand how this book is available for children to buy. Can a bookstore refuse to sell a book to a child if they feel it's to mature of a subject?

No. When I worked at Borders you could only deny children of buying pornography, r-rated movies, and parental advisories.

I don't think so, that would just be ridiculous. But that book could be a strong example of how graphic books can be.

Start with Rules of Attraction, then American Psycho.

I didn't really like The Informers or Glamorama as much as the rest, and I never finished Lunar Park.

I've read all of his books and I would recommend reading them in the order they came out because they have recurring characters from previous books. Less Than Zero is my favorite of his, and I can't wait to read the sequel!

I tried buying The Stand by Stephen King when I was in sixth grade.. my parents gave me money, told me to buy whatever I wanted.. the guy at the desk gave me a really hard time, saying he's read it and it's inappropriate.. Had to get my parents to go in and bitch him out. So lame.

Less Than Zero and The Rules of Attraction are amazing.. his other books I enjoy, but those two still impress me every time

Alright this might be one of the creepiest things to happen to me in a while.
Some guy named Stephen Macomber requested me on Facebook. I had no idea who he was but noticed it says he went to Bennington College and had some sort of relationship with Ellis, so I added him.
He claims to be "The Handsome Dunce" mentioned in The Rules of Attraction and seems absolutely fucking insane. The two mutual friends I have with the guy are totally unrelated and neither of them have read the novels (I don't even know if they can read).

In the fall of 1985, I, Stephen No Middle Name Macomber entered the freshman class of Camden College, belatedly named Pre-Camden in my upcoming memoirs. Soon after becoming popular due to the Ratio (1 male to 3 females) The Easton Author (Less Than Zero and the sequel Imperial Bedrooms) wrote his memoirs called The Rules of Attraction, and immortalized The Moi Guy (me) by reducing me to the lowest character he could shape into a freshmen in all of the world!

Excerpt from the book (also taken from his facebook):
The Offending Excerpts: "Steve has a BMW. He is from Long Island. Raymond laughs at every lame conversation attempt made by this idiot Steve and asks him constantly if he wants anything and brings him things (cookies, a disgusting/funny salad, garnishes stolen from the salad bar) even if he has said no. It's so nauseating that you are about to get up and leave, sit somewhere else... You stay because Steve is hot. [He's a] blond-tan-good-body-stupid-goon... the Freshmen, represented here by Steve, look so stupid, so desperate to please, trying so hard, nothing on their minds but partying, dressed like ads for Esprit sportswear. Fact remains however: they are better looking than the Seniors.... Steve, whose eyes look permanently half-closed, a dumb grin locked on his face, nodding to no one. [Steve's] not interested in what passes for conversation at the table. "Huh?" Steve asks..."I learned a lot from that class" Steve says... "Like what the alphabet?" Steve just says "Wha?"

Eh, it was decent. I read American Psycho first then the rest in order and he became my favorite author.
Less Than Zero is my favorite book by him and I think it is the best at showing off his writing style to get you used to it. American Psycho has a lot of rants about specific brands and products that Patrick Bateman uses as well as extremely graphic violence, so if you didn't see the movie its a bit off putting.
Informers was okay, definitely not his best work.
I'd say pick between LTZ, Rules of Attraction, or American Psycho.

Thanks. I read the synop and don't find myself every interested. I guess I didn't place any of those characters in a similar way 25 years down the road. I don't think I could stand another slice of Clay's life, especially if his character has made no real progression/regression in the interim.

The book is an extremely different feel from the movie. Both medias worked very well (a testament to AP's director). Even if you've seen the movie, I'd still say it's his best to start with, as it's definitely his best.

Less Than Zero was very underwhelming for me. It was enjoyable, but pretty much goes nowhere (which, in fairness, is the point). If you're not going to start with AP, I'd start with Rules.
