And not a Twitter mention yet. I'm proud.

I love how people are tweeting that we're in the end times because we've seen two major earthquakes this year. Too bad we've been seeing earthquakes of this magnitude pretty consistently for the past century or so (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/mag8/magnitude8_1900_date.php).

Tsunamis are almost always overhyped, but that's OK too: better be safe than sorry. That said, the really severe warnings are only in effect along a stretch of South American coast, last time I looked at the maps.

What about that the Tsunami of 2004?

That had a lot to do with a lack of sufficient warning, people were on the beach going out to see why there wasnt any water on the shore (which is a major red flag) when it was coming. There werent sirens or anything, on top of that there were 3 waves that were hours apart so when people thought it was safe to go out and look for their loved ones after the first wave, another wave hit (killing more).

Not to mention it was vacation season, but yes those waves were big.

Did I say that nobody should care? No. Did I say that this particular 1/4 of the planet is used to earthquakes? Yes, which means that we're better prepared for earthquakes, buildings are reinforced, there are actual codes that have to be followed, not as many people arent going to die in collapsed buildings that should have been condemned in the first place. Anyway, I don't know if people know this or not but I just can never wrap my head around it whenever I hear about massive earthquakes like these. I never said anything about Tokyo or Honolulu. The cities in Chile are well prepared for earthquakes. Also, see below...because I really want you to understand something for once in your life.

Hmm...you'd almost think people wanted to put out a warning about a possible impending tsunami...

 Yeah, you see below, too.

Again, I said this wasnt a mega disaster because they were more prepared than haiti was you fucking idiot. Now a goddamn earthquake that was "one of the highest recorded" didnt kill even half as many as the one in haiti did. Did you get my fucking point yet?

How does this make any sense? You're taking a complete revisionist perspective on this; you say it wasn't a megadisater because there wasn't as much damage as Haiti and there were no huge tsunamis. Everyone who knows what they are talking about know that the warning went out because the quake was larger than most on record. It's awesome that the destruction/death toll wasn't as high as other disasters, but you can't look back on the earthquake and decide since there wasn't worldwide destruction there was no need for a warning. The other option was to figure (apparently much like you) 'Hey, fuck it, it's the Ring of Fire. They're prepared for these things.' and pray that nothing big happens.

Remember how well that worked in 2004?

zion being zion

As well, you should probably check out this (http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/node/128611) article.

Top story: Three aftershocks hit Chile today, compounding the damage done by a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the country on Saturday. More than two million people have been displaced from their homes. Most of the deaths took place in the coastal Maule region, which was also slammed by a Tsunami following the quake.

Sorry 1/4 of the globe isn't underwater right now, but I assure you none of this was 'sensationalist'.

It wasn't only zion in this thread, that's the sad part. :-|

Although I did like zion simultaneously proving and un-proving her non-point in a single post.

Yup, that looks well-prepared.

Yet when the news agencies and press try to warn everyone about an 8.8 earthquake in the Ring of Fire it's sensationalized bullshit.

Oh, and what about the Indian Ocean Tsunami?

Hmm...you'd almost think people wanted to put out a warning about a possible impending tsunami...

 Yeah, you see below, too.

Lack of evacuation, not lack of warning, even without sirens there are natural warnings when it comes to tsunamis, but again that wasnt the point I was making. Go back to my first posts, I said that this wasnt a mega disaster, and it wasnt going to be because the people were better prepared than they were going to be somewhere else, because we learned from previous disasters. What part of that arent you getting? How stupid are you going to continue to be? Did I say say that we should just pray nothing big ever happens? Nope...

I wish it did destroy this 1/4 of the fucking planet.
