i guess the phrase "kick in the balls" is up for interpretation. when i heard that track, i was like "ugh, how did i ever like this chick?" definitely a kick in the balls.

I hated it at first, but I've grown to enjoy it. While I prefer the acoustic pop sound on her first album, she's definitely the most comfortable and at her best with these kind of spunky pop anthems.

i don't know exactly what you're asking. if the song comes after an instrumental opener, then i guess that's okay.

Like "For the Workforce Drowning" is instant loud/obnoxious riffage...but the 2 I posted have 10 sec. build ups, or short intros.

obnoxious? :nono:
i haven't gotten to listening to yours yet, but judging from that description, that's totally acceptable. i'd say Brand New's "Vices" is also a kick in the balls, and that starts out as a sampling of another song.

Thursday is my 2nd favorite band, and 'WATT' is my 2nd favorite album of theirs...the opener is amazing. Obnoxious isn't always a bad thing.

That is the best Thursday song I love that song. By kick in the balls do you mean that as a good or bad thing? If good than Calling All Skeltons by Alkaline Trio and Dumpweed by Blink 182 along with Anthem Pt 2 By Blink 182 again

one dude posted an Avril song, off of her worst album by far. i know he probably did it as a joke, but still, "kick in the balls" is definitely up for interpretation, though i'm hoping to hear some good stuff from this thread.

Wow.
This was harder then I thought. . .Most albums with crazy starts begin with an intro.
Good call on Thursday though.
I'm going with Silverstein "A Great Fire"

"My Happy Ending" is my favorite Avril Lavigne song, but The Best Damn Thing is better than Under My Skin. It's harder to take in one sitting if I'm not in the mood for that kind of bratty bubblegum pop, but it's definitely the kind of music she's best at. As for "Girlfriend," I think it's instrumentally a great opening track. Really grabs your attention and pulls you in.

yeah, i totally agree. that song got me hooked on lydia. just saying i don't consider it a kick in the balls, hence the subjective-ness of the phrase.
edit: what i was implying was, i was surprised lydia was even mentioned in this thread. i can't stop you or anyone else from posting things that i don't agree are kick in the balls. i'm actually enjoying the multiple interpretations of the phrase so far.

Lots of amazing music being mentioned, but people aren't getting kicked in the balls by most of it.
I'm taking the ball kicking = immediate face melting interpretation.

i think an opener that's a kick in the balls is a song that floors you every time you hear it, whether it's a fast moshing song or a slower but heavily emotional song. it's really all up for interpretation, though, so whatever you think is a kick in the balls is fine.
