View Full Version : who is the greatest rapper of all-time?

to answer the question of who, first we must answer why? what is the criteria for the crown?
-longevity (lots of people can put out one good album, to be the greatest you have to prove it's repeatable.
-battle-tested. battling is an undeniable element of hip-hop where respect is most measured.
-flow. presentation's important. this includes pacing as well as voice.
-lyrics. any idiot can make a rhyme, it's who can say the most with the least, as well as just being fuckin cool. also the complexities of the rhymes should be taken into account. rhyming university instead of car gets more points.
-beats. true the mc usually isn't the one making these, but he chooses what to spit over, and if your ear is wack, your mouth probably is too.
considering all things i gotta go with Jay-Z. 7 discs, not all classics, but enough classics released at different times to keep the entire career relevant. he tore up nas, it's mroe than just ether VS. takeover. don't forget about Blueprint 2(the song) and super ugly. flow is the most personal category, but you can't say Jay's sucks, it might not be the best, but you can't say it's bad. as for lyrics, listen to reasonable doubt, then the black album. two pretty different styles lyrically but both are better than 99% of the other humans. beats - just blaze and kanye, end of story.
jigga's the man, but i gotta say it was hard choosing between him and eminem.
dylon, dylon dylon dylon and dylon.

I dont listen to rap at all now but i used to. but Tupac is the best or Nas. Rappers these days talk about the stupidest things. 50 cent wwhen he started...had the potential to be a great rapper but now hes just like every other rapper out there. Talking about the same thing. its repetitive and simply pointless. But the best rapper...out Tupac or Nas i'd say.

I'm quite a fan of the lyrics of Kweli and Common as well as Ghostface and Nas.
Battlewise Eminem (not a fan) and Jay-Z are amazing

2pac's flow wasn't that great though. he didn't throw around a lot of multi's. he didn't challenge himself to become the best. he was too busy really hating white people. you can't tell me that 2pac was better lyrically than alot of the guys that came after him. i'm surprised we haven't seen anyone say BIGGIE. he was damn good but didn't have longevity working for him. i know it's terrible but it's true.
jay-Z coulda crushed 2pac in a battle. and put out a better record that sold more. there's your greatest rapper. honorable mention to eminem. dude rhymed oranges, what the fuck?!

Krayzie Bone from Bone Thugs. Raps ridiculously fast and i love his flow. And his lyrics (even tho they are all about smoking and killing) are put in a really cool way. And longevity is not an issue cuz the THUGS have been around for 15 years. My favorite mainstream rapper
Immortal Technique is my fave Hip-Hop MC. I love his flow and i think he has the best Lyrics around. Just listen to Dance With The Devil.

eh, you missed the part where I actually gave my real answer, KRS One himself.
I suppose you didn't latch on to the thick(and I thought obvious) sarcasm in my post about Nelly and Ja Rule.

This thread alone is the reason why ap shouldn't have a hip hop forum. We're on page 4 and NO ONE has said biggie? Seriously? The last great MC...
but all the greats differ in different ways... there is no greatest..

Last great doesn't mean "greatest of all time"
and the statement was a litle much, there are alot of people who post here who know alot about music
thats why i said there is no greatest... but he was the last great mc and no one on here has given him any credit so far... which is rediculous...

Buying the new Taking Back Sunday album doesn't make you some grand fan of music.
