So we've got six days 'til the Oscars. There are six MAJOR categories. Seems destined. So let's start. These will all be who you WANT to win polls, not who you THINK will win:
What do you WANT to win Best Picture?

It was either Hurt Locker or Inglorious Basterds for me, but basically as long as Avatar doesn't win I'm happy.

I picked the Hurt Locker, but really the Hurt Locker, Up in the Air and Inglourious Basterds were my favorite three movies of the year. If any of them won, I'd be pleased.
Not Avatar. Not the Blind Side.

Inglourious Basterds. (I'd be fine with The Hurt Locker winning though)

I chose The Hurt Locker, but if Inglourious Basterds won, I'd be pretty happy. I still think they should've chosen five nominees.. there's no way some of these movies, as good as they are, are going to win. Especially The Blind Side. Seriously haha.

Inglorious Basterds or The Hurt Locker.

Voted for Basterds. Would also be happy with The Hurt Locker. Or Up in the Air. Or A Serious Man (hahaha, that's gonna happen). You could have probably had a NOT Avatar option that would have gotten a few votes.
Also, if you voted for Avatar, drink some cyanide.

Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all-time....I would have aboslutely no problem if it won best picture.
But I'd prefer if Inglorious Bastards won.

So funny to see how Avatar, despite making a shitload of cash and getting a lot of hype, seems to be losing some of its appeal. It's one thing to make a lot of money and be the highest grossing movie of all time, it's another when half of the nominees on the list were actually better movies. If that shit wins, I'm going to rage so hard

what im saying is that if the movie was clearly THIS popular...and this much of an ICONIC movie of a year...I have no problem awarding it an award.
I like having the oscar go to a movie that represents the buzz of a certain year, is a good movie, and when you look back you can say Avatar won because of... (fill in the blank).
I mean I was one of the original non-supporters of Avatar, the backlash it's getting lately is expected.
I also feel like Hurt Locket supports my theory of what should win the oscar, as it would be nice to see some sort of "war on terrorism" movie from this era get an oscar, although I was kind of let down by the movie as a whole.
What I think is the best movie of the year doesn't get nominated anyways so haha why would I simply root for which movie was simply just "done the best"...the criteria the Academy looks for in a movie, isn't similar to mine so I can't really put my hat in the ring on any of these.
And i didn't mean it to sound like it should win BECAUSE it grossed a billion dollars...but I'm saying that I wouldn't have a problem with a movie that made a billion dollars to win it either.

I think Slumdog Millionaire and Crash are the ones I've heard as of late that have gotten the most hate.. No idea why. I personally think every movie that's won Best Picture has been the right choice out of the nominees, not necessarily the movies released that year. Well, Crash was just okay for me, but in terms of how entertaining and engaging the movies were, the winners so far have been okay.
*crying stars*
03/02/10, 09:45 AM
Avatar, while being the most technologically advanced and highest grossing (though that's with inflation) film thus far, was not the best film of the year by any means. Also, with my love for all things Disney/Pixar, I think it's just great that Up got a Best Picture nom and are pretty much a lock-in for Best Animated Feature (which is a pretty difficult category this year with such strong films).
Also, I just find this interesting (off of RT):
The Blind Side - 69%, 6.2/10, 144 reviews (one of these things is not like the other)
Avatar - 82%, 7.4/10, 252 reviews
A Serious Man - 87%, 7.8/10 179 reviews
Inglourious Basterds - 89%, 7.7/10, 256 reviews
District 9 - 90%, 7.8/10, 239 reviews
Up in the Air - 90%, 8.1/10, 233 reviews
Precious - 91%, 7.8/10, 199 reviews
An Education - 95%, 7.9/10, 167 reviews
The Hurt Locker - 97%, 8.4/10, 195 reviews
Up - 98%, 8.6/10, 252 reviews
Just stats worth looking at. But who knows? Upsets have been pulled before, and great films have survived without the big award.

The problem with Crash was the fact that people didn't think it was supposed to win and thought that Brokeback Mountain was the better film. The backlash was part shock.

Very interesting stats.. I never have thought The Blind Side was worthy of a best picture nomination.. and the fact that Avatar is close to the bottom of that list says everything. Hopefully the Golden Globe it won for Best Picture was an award given to James Cameron to console him for hopefully losing to The Hurt Locker at the Oscars haha

I get the feeling that the people who are hating on Slumdog now probably were then as well/were still bitter that their precious Dark Knight didn't get a nomination. Crash is understandable, because it absolutely shouldn't have won. And the Academy has gotten it wrong a ridiculous number of times, but Slumdog wasn't one of them.

I don't understand the hate for Avatar at all. It was visually the most impressive movie I have ever seen and a pretty decent story to boot. I don't think that best picture necessarily has to mean best story. Avatar was a completely new experience to me and that alone would warrant a win in my book. I don't want it to win but I'm ok with it if it does win.

My biggest problem with it, at the end of the day, is that I just didn't give a shit. Not about the cardboard characters, not about the derivative plotline, not about it's attempt at a message. Oh yeah, the visuals were great, but for me they were more than canceled out by those elements and weak performances. The only less deserving winner would be The Blind Side, and I still enjoyed that more.

I sort of agree in this sense, I need to see a BP nominee that has me on the edge of my seat because of the characters and what is happening in the story. I probably enjoyed Avatar more than you did, but I still just don't think it's a BP winner for me, and I thought it was crazy that it has been getting so much award hype, especially when you have films as good as the others in the bracket of 10 this year.
