Many bands now a days seem to be highly overrated to most people.. Out of the following list, which one stands out as the 'most overrated'?

Green Day is by far the most overrated band, IMO. Their music is very typical and focuses around basic chord structures and lacks sonority. Not a big fan of Billie Joe's guitar playing. Coldplay's radio singles may be annoying, but if you really listen to them, you will see how amazing they really are, not to mention great musicians. I am shocked they are getting the most votes, but Im sure most people who voted that havent given them a fair chance.

Ok.This was stupid. The Ramones were playing songs with only 3 or 4 chords and they were awesome.Mostly all punk bands were playing 3 to 4 chord songs and were awesome.Since I'm a GD fan and you're a Coldplay fan, I guess there's no point in writing anything at all.

White Stripes. The fact that people praise White's guitar work while other guitarists like Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Claudio Sanchez, Jade Puget and Matt Bellamy go unnoticed by the 'powers that be' in music makes me want to tear my eyes out. Coincidental that hearing White's voice garners that very same reaction?
'Others' - Nirvana, Tool, Radiohead, U2.

Omar, Claudio and Matt Bellamy are all recognized as incredible guitarists. And the fact that you added Jade Puget into that group of people is baffling, as is you listing Nirvana, Tool and Radiohead

datsdatdude
03/03/10, 06:47 PM
And why is it baffling that Jade Puget is a great guitarist? I mean, I get it - AFI is far from popular on this site, but don't discredit all the songs, riffs, and hooks he's created since joining on Black Sails.
Noticed you let U2 go - wise choice. But the fact of the matter is that U2, Nirvana, Tool, and Radiohead are all iconic names in music. How is it baffling that they might, just might, be overrated?
Star Slight
03/03/10, 06:55 PM
I'm not saying that he's not talented, but to put him in a list with the others just seems a little much.
And they're all iconic names in music because of how incredible they all are...although Tool doesn't get as much love as the others. I don't know why you wouldn't list The Beatles with the rest of those bands, seeing as they were talented but completely overrated.
datsdatdude
03/03/10, 07:14 PM
Well, I think whoever made this poll put up bands that most of the people on this site would know well. The median age of users on this site suggests people are more familiar with blink-182 than they are of Tool, plus, who doesn't love to use Coldplay as a punching bag on occasion? I digress - The Beatles are to music as Citizen Kane is to film. Neither can be over or underrated because the institution would look unrecognizable without each's contributions. I'm not the biggest Beatles fan, but I can't call them overrated. I can, however, call Jack White overrated, because I fail to see how he's more talented then, say, Claudio Sanchez. Yet White brings home Grammy's and AOTY's hand over fist. As for Puget, maybe I overstated his place in the pantheon of guitarists, but I'm a huge AFI head, so in my head, he's up there.
Good thoughts, though, espo. Respect.

I think Greenday have only become overated within the last two albums, all their old stuff was very worthy of praise.
The White Stripes are looked down on if anything, they deserve more credit.
Coldplay are great musicians!
Brand New are my favourite band, I know that they are mentioned alot on this site, however alot of people still dont know who they are as they get no radio play (here in the uk).
Blink 182 could be considered overated, but then again they have produced some amazing pop-punk classics.
I was very close to choosing Paramore .. but the Miss Williams is hot .. AND I saw other .. which was my choice.
Other = MUSE.
Not sure how Muse are considered over in the US, but they get way to much hype in the UK, and for me its just drony indulgent music. (Although I know they are good musicians and can appreciate if you like them!)

Dookie? pretty much the start of pop-punk that exists today?
Because that's definitely something to be proud of.
EDIT: I also think there is no clear definite answer to this. Any answer will have a certain amount of bias towards that Artist's actual talent and the deserving of said attention. I don't like any of Green Day's material (although despite my sarcastic reply, I do respect them for helping to kick start a popular genre) so I consider them very overrated.

Well I had all this build up going into In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, and I expected it to completely blow me away. But when I listened to it, I didn't hate it, but I really didn't see the hype. I tried really hard to get into it, but it just seemed to at best have a few good ideas, and at worst just be kind of pretentious. Don't get me wrong I liked it, and I understand it influences a lot of people (My brother's band just put up a cover of King Of Carrot Flowers Parts 1 and 2) , but it simply didn't touch me at all emotionally.

I don't listen to The White Stripes, but Jack White is kind of everywhere and he's a musical genius
Paramore demonstrated us, in the digital era, a very young band can climb up the charts and sell thousands of records
Green Day took pop punk into the mainstream (remember that Dookie sold 10 million copies?), and even if I don't like what they're doing now, they'll always be great for me
Blink-182 gave life to a new wave of pop punk, even more accessible, melodic, fast and, the first pop punk cd I bought was TOYPAJ so, they're worth every cent I spent. I'll see them live in September
Brand New isn't that great for me, but they tried to expand their sound and evolve trying to stay true to themselves and I liked Daisy (also critics seems to like them but the hype on this site is TOO huge)
So... the band who I haven't talk about is my choice

The White stripes are not overrated... Jack White is a great songwriter
Paramore is a bit overrated, Brand New Eyes is not that good! (but they are not the most overrated)
Blink 182 - Not Overrated for two reasons: first: they have some of the most catchy pop-punk songs and second: Untitled is one of the most underrated mainstream albuns ever so they cant be overrated
Coldplay: they are an awesome pop band, people just dont like them because they are pop, but that doesnt make them bad
Brand New are only overrated in this website.
Green Day are my choice. I love the band but American Idiot is not as good as the world things it is neither it is that big of a departure from their previous sound. and 21st Century Breakdows is just a regular rock album.
