SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Carolina Panthers All-Pro receiver Steve Smith was carted off the field Saturday with a hamstring injury on the opening day of training camp.
Midway through the afternoon session, Smith pulled up while running a long route down the left sideline. He immediately clutched his left hamstring, took a couple of steps and fell to the ground.
Two trainers came to his side, and new teammate Keyshawn Johnson also came over to check on Smith, who slowly got to his feet after about a minute. He threw his gloves in anger, got onto the back of the cart and was brought inside.
"It seems like he probably strained it," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "He's done this before in training camp."
Smith, who led the NFL with 103 receptions for 1,563 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, missed the final week of June's coaching sessions with hamstring pain.
Panthers defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, who is returning from a knee injury, had back spasms following the morning workout.
Jenkins, who missed all but five games in the past two seasons with knee injuries, walked gingerly to the locker room after the workout. He attempted to practice early in the afternoon session, but ended up riding a stationary bike.
"He made a move and took a hand in the muscle and suffered spasms," Hurney said.
Also Saturday, the Panthers released reserve defensive end Otis Leverette after he failed a physical due to illness.

this is why fantasy drafts shouldnt start until after training camp.
sucks for anyone who invested a 1st round pick in this guy.

he's the top WR on the board. Most mock drafts have him anywhere from the 8th to 15th pick.

most of my leagues he goes early second, a lot of people take RBs and Peyton. But I haven't had a league over 10 people until this year (where the draft is aug 28th)

My strategy is to always get the top wide out very early...the WR pool is the most shallow, so I try and get the best of that crop when I can.

i still think chad jackson/holmes can have somewhat productive years...there was noone good around when i picked them so i figured why not

The only one besides Sinorice Moss I'd draft is Chad Jackson, I think he's got some potential.

Chad Jackson, I think he's got some potential.
he's good for your bench...he might emerge as a top receiver since they're so thin...but i hope he's not someone you need to produce right away

Yeah. Nobody should be relying on a rookie as a starter this year at WR, there are plenty of good wide outs to draft.

I did that one time, relied on a rookie starting from week 1, Randy Moss. It worked out well that year.

holmes as a #3 in a primarily running offense?

i agree wit mat1488 or whatever... unless you have one of the top 4 picks (larry johnson, LT, alexander or peyton) youre best bet is a top tier wideout. most every other running back and QB can get you good, but not eye popping numbers.
